The rapid increase in the demand for international tourism has led
a growing number of people to seek holidays and travel experiences
in both developed and developing countries. Yet little interest has
been shown in the interface between tourism and health, Health and
the International Tourist, first published in 1996, examines key
relationships between travel, tourism and health. Particular
attention is given to the behaviour and lifestyle of tourists and
approaches to reducing the health risks associated with
international travel and tourism. This was the first book to
address tourist health in an interdisciplinary manner, with
contributions from professionals in medicine, health promotion, the
travel and tourism industry and tourism researchers. It will
provide a sound basis for further research and the development of
health promotion strategies, and will be of interest to students of
health and tourism.

The significance of travel and tourism in relation to the
international epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections has
been widely recognized for many years. With the appearance of
AIDS/HIV, a new impetus has been given to research in this field
and to the consideration of practical preventative initiatives
targeting international travellers. Considerable attention has also
been given to the impact which international tourism has had on the
development of commercial sex industries in different destinations
around the world. In particular, serious concerns have been
expressed about the role of international tourism in promoting the
sexual exploitation of children and young people. This edited
collection of 16 chapters makes a contribution to this debate. It
provides a comprehensive overview of research findings and
discusses their implications for health - both for the
international traveller and of the local communities in major
tourism destinations.
