Economics for Sustainable Prosperity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Steven Hail Economics for Sustainable Prosperity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Steven Hail
R4,239 Discovery Miles 42 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The central argument of this book is that the foundations for sustainable prosperity lie in an approach to economic management based on modern monetary theory and a job guarantee. This approach builds on the work of Keynes, Kalecki, Minsky, Davidson, Godley and other Post- Keynesian economists-as well as research by behavioral economists including Simon, Kahneman and Loewenstein-to explore the role that a permanent, equitable job guarantee could play in building an inclusive, participatory and just society. Orthodox (neoclassical) economics, in its various forms, has failed to deliver sustainable prosperity. An important reason for this failure is its lack of realistic foundations. It misrepresents both human nature and economic institutions, and its use as a frame for the development and assessment of economic policy proposals has had disastrous consequences for social inclusion and the quality of life of millions of people. This book discusses an alternative, more realistic and more useful set of economic foundations, which could deliver the opportunity of a decent quality of life with dignity to all.

Computer supported collaboration in academia is becoming increasingly important for two reasons. Firstly, there is a drive to make the most effective use of the resources available to universities, and secondly, there is a growing belief in the pedagogical benefits of using computer support in teaching. In this volume, an international collection of authors from both academia and industry examines ways in which universities can make effective use of asynchronous collaboration. All aspects of academic life are covered, from teaching and research through to support and management. The Digital University contains a range of material, from research-oriented chapters through to the experiences of senior university management in attempting to make their institutions as efficient as they need to be to survive in the 21st century.

University education continues to be revolutionized by the use of Web-based teaching and learning systems. Following on from "The Digital University: Reinventing the Academy", this book provides a fully up-to-date and practical guide to using and implementing this important technology. Looking specifically at asynchronous collaboration, it covers:- policies- management of collaboration- distance learning- support for authoring- course design- educational metadata schemaand will be an essential buy for managers, lecturers, administrators, department heads and researchers. It includes a foreword by Ben Shneiderman, Director of the HCI Laboratory at the University of Maryland, USA.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the First International ICST Conference, S-CUBE 2009, held in Pisa, Italy, in september 2009.

The 16 contributions published in this volume were carefully selected from 45 submitted works in a rigorous peer-reviewed process. In addition to this 3 distinguished researchers were asked to contribute 3 invited papers.

The papers examine research challenges facing system development and software support for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Currently, wireless sensor networks introduce innovative and interesting application scenarios that may support a large amount of different applications including environmental monitoring, disaster prevention, building automation, object tracking, nuclear reactor control, fire detection, agriculture, healthcare, and traffic monitoring. The widespread acceptance of these new services can be improved by the definition of frameworks and architectures that have the potential to radically simplify software development for wireless sensor network based applications. The aim of these new architectures is to support flexible, scalable programming of applications based on adaptive middleware. As a consequence, WSNs require novel programming paradigms and technologies. Moreover the design of new complex systems, characterized by the interaction of different and heterogeneous resources, will allow the development of innovative applications that meet high performance goals. Hence, WSNs require contributions from many fields such as embedded systems, distributed systems, data management, system security and applications.
