Telemetering systems and applications have moved far beyond the space flight telemetry most people have heard of to cutting-edge uses across a broad range of disciplines, including industry, medicine, and meteorology. To fully understand and participate in the acquisition of data this technology makes possible, scientists in these fields along with engineers new to telemetering require some background in the concepts, hardware, and software that makes the technology so valuable.
Introduction to PCM Telemetering Systems, Third Edition summarizes the techniques and terminology used in sending data and control information between users and the instruments that collect and process the data. Fully revised, it gives an overall systems introduction to the relevant topics in three primary areas: system interfaces; data transport, timing, and synchronization; and data transmission techniques. Integrating relevant information about the process at all levels from the user interface down to the transmission channel, this will also include how designers apply relevant industry and government standards at each level in this process. Homework problems are included at the end of each chapter.

Three Corner Satellite is a constellation of three nanosatellites designed and built by students. New Mexico State University has taken on the design of the communications system for this constellation. The system includes the forward link, return link, and the crosslink. Due to size, mass, power, and financial constraints, we must design a small, light, power efficient, and inexpensive communications system. This thesis presents the design of a radio system to accomplish the data transmission requirements in light of the system constraints. In addition to the hardware design, the operational commands needed by the satellite's on-board computer to control and communicate with the communications hardware will be presented. In order for the hardware to communicate with the ground stations, we will examine the link budgets derived from the radiated power of the transmitters, link distance, data modulation, and data rate for each link. The antenna design for the constellation is analyzed using software and testing the physical antennas on a model satellite. After the analysis and testing, a combination of different systems will meet and exceed the requirements and constraints of the Three Corner Satellite constellation.
The performance of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) in space has been examined from the observations of simulation and experimental tests for several years at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Department of Defense (DoD) and universities. At New Mexico State University (NMSU), we have been concentrating on studying the performance of two protocol suites: the file transfer protocol (ftp) running over Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) stack and the file protocol (fp) running over the Space Communications Protocol Standards (SCPS)-Transport Protocol (TP) developed under the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) standards process. SCPS-TP is considered to be TCP's extensions for space communications. This dissertation experimentally studies the behavior of TCP and SCPS-TP by running the protocol suites over both the Space-to-Ground Link Simulator (SGLS) test-bed and realistic satellite link. The study concentrates on comparing protocol behavior by plotting the averaged file transfer times for different experimental configurations and analyzing them using Statistical Analysis System (SAS) based procedures. The effects of different link delays and various Bit-Error-Rates (BERS) on each protocol performance are also studied and linear regression models are built for experiments over SGLS test-bed to reflect the relationships between the file transfer time and various transmission conditions.
Benjamin Graham referred to it as his “margin of safety.” Seth Klarman favors it over all other investment methods. Warren Buffett uses it to make millions for his investors. It’s called value investing, and you can make it work wonders for your portfolio. All you need is money to invest, a little patience—and this book. Strategic Value Investing reveals everything you need to know to build a world-class portfolio using value investing as your north star. Written by experts on valuation and financial analysis, this comprehensive guide breaks it all down into an easy-to-implement process. The authors explain the ins and outs of determining when a stock is undervalued, then purchasing it and selling it for a profit when the rest of the world learns what you knew all along. With Strategic Value Investing, you’ll learn how to: Distinguish between the various measures of value, including going concern, replacement value, fair market value, book value, and intrinsic value Identify undervalued companies before everyone else, and know what to look for, what to avoid, when to buy, and when to sell The authors teach you how to establish a dispassionate value investing philosophy tailored to your needs. Equally important, they provide the tools you need to adhere to this often contrarian approach regardless of your emotions or crowd sentiment. Get in before the crowd—and get out when the price is right with Strategic Value Investing. Praise for Strategic Value Investing “A book that has much the same character as a good value investor: calm, disciplined, with a grasp both of broad theory and of how to apply it.” —JOHN AUTHERS, senior investment columnist, Financial Times “This comprehensive look at valuation techniques is not only insightful, but can be easily put to use by individual and professional investors alike.” —CHARLES ROTBLUT, CFA, Vice President, the American Association of Individual Investors “Offers a sound fundamental perspective for those looking to deepen their analysis around stocks. A great resource for all types of value investors.” —HEATHER BRILLIANT, CFA, global head of equity research at Morningstar and member of the CFA Institute Board of Governors “This book is of Real Value! It updates the pioneering work of Ben Graham and Phillip Fisher, blending the valuation techniques of the masters (such as Warren Buffett) and provides institutional and individual investors the A to Z of value investing from a practitioner perspective.” —JOHN MAGINN, CFA, EVP & CIO, Mutual of Omaha (retired) and coeditor of Managing Investment Portfolios “An actionable road map for implementing a disciplined value investing strategy. Very much in the Ben Graham style. The sophisticated individual investor will find this comprehensive digest a continual and timeless reference.” —WALLACE FORBES, CFA, President of Forbes Investors Advisory Institute, Division of Forbes magazine “Many books propose to help you learn how to become a better value investor. This one, which is bound to become a staple of every value investor’s library, delivers on its promise.” —ROBERT POWELL, editor of Retirement Weekly and columnist of “MarketWatch”
