In 1997, Conservation International held a conservation priority-setting workshop in Irian Jaya, Indonesia, bringing together government agencies and conservation organizations. The Mamberano Lake Basin region was identified as a high priority, and this volume offers a biodiversity assessment for the Yongsu-Cyclops Mountains and the southern portion of the Mamberano Basin, both tropical ecosystems that include well-known fauna such as tree kangaroos, cuscus, cassowaries, and many species of birds.
This report presents the biological results of a scientific expedition to the remote Kaijende Highlands region of Papua New Guinea. The assessment team found a region of spectacular natural beauty, containing many rare and poorly known plant and animal species, amongst which they discovered sixteen new plant and eight new frog species. The area has exceptional conservation potential, the researchers explain, because its high-montane habitats remain substantially intact and local communities are being engaged in the development of conservation management strategies for the region.
The Rapid Assessment Program (RAP) surveys have been a highly effective conservation tool for Conservation International and a multitude of partners. RAP surveys provide a quick assessment of the biological value of an area and identify species in need of conservation action. This exciting book outlines the inception, history, and achievements of this program during its first two decades, 1990-2010. The editors profile nearly eighty expeditions to some of the most remote but highly threatened sites around the world and relay personal stories from the field. Illustrated with hundreds of photos taken during the RAP surveys, this book includes the first photos of many newly discovered species of animals and plants, and other rarely photographed jewels of terrestrial, freshwater and marine biodiversity.
