This book examines the impacts of land tenure reform interventions
implemented in Benin, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe. Since 2000,
many African countries have introduced programs aimed at providing
smallholder farmers with low-cost certificates for land held under
customary tenure. Yet there are many contending views and debates
on the impact of these land policies and this book reveals how
tenure security, agricultural productivity and social inclusion
were affected by the interventions. It analyses the results of
carefully selected, authoritative studies on interventions in
Benin, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe and applies a realist
synthesis methodology to explore the socio-political and economic
contexts. Drawing on these results, the book argues that inadequate
attention paid to the core characteristics of rural social systems
obscures the benefits of customary tenure while overlooking the
scope for reforms to reduce the gaps in social status among members
of customary communities. The book will be of great interest to
students and scholars of land management and use, land and property
law, tenure security, agrarian studies, political economy and
sustainable development. It will also appeal to development
professionals and policymakers involved in land governance and land
policy in Africa.
Psychosis is possibly the most feared symptom of mental health
disorders, other than suicide, as the sufferer loses touch with
reality and can be an extreme danger to themselves and occasionally
others. It is particularly associated with schizophrenia, but also
manic episodes of bipolar disorder, extreme stress and emotional
trauma and substance abuse. Erica Crampton, a former
psychosis/schizophrenia patient and now mental health activist and
writer, and Stephen Lawrie, Professor of Psychiatry in Edinburgh,
UK, have come together to write this practical and positive guide
to the tools for recovery to help people with psychosis, or at risk
of developing psychosis, and their family and friends, lead a
happier, more rewarding life. Written in the style of a travel
guide, with lifestyle and wellbeing advice to improve outcomes as
well as guidance on conventional treatments, each approach is given
a `sanity check' regarding its reliability.

Neuroimaging techniques have made a huge contribution to our
understanding of schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric
disorders. Until now however, texts on both schizophrenia and
neuroimaging have paid little attention to the overlap between
these areas. This new volume is the first dedicated to unraveling
how these techniques can help us better understand this complex
disorder. Each chapter focuses on a particular research method,
describing the nature of the findings, the main technological
problems, and future possibilities. Though including sufficient
methodological detail to be of value to imaging researchers, the
emphasis throughout is on providing information of value to
clinicians. Written and edited by leaders in schizophrenia
research, this book details what structural and functional brain
imaging studies have already established about schizophrenia and
what developments are likely in the foreseeable future. It will be
of great value to psychiatrists, neuropsychiatrists, and cognitive
neuroscientists.
