Islamic Development in Palestine - A Comparative Study (Hardcover): Stephen Royle Islamic Development in Palestine - A Comparative Study (Hardcover)
Stephen Royle
R4,618 Discovery Miles 46 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book assesses the capabilities of an Islamic approach in aiding self-organisation by examining the case of the occupied Palestinian territories in conjunction with a comparative analysis of four other nations. Three main mechanisms of Islamic development are explored; finance, microfinance and charity. Identifying the need to recognise the non-linear nature of societal interaction at the individual, community and state levels, the book uses complexity theory to better understand development. It assesses the role of Islamic development at macro and micro levels and identifies issues with rigid and hierarchical policy making.

Company, Crown and Colony - The Hudson's Bay Company and Territorial Endeavour in Western Canada (Hardcover): Stephen Royle Company, Crown and Colony - The Hudson's Bay Company and Territorial Endeavour in Western Canada (Hardcover)
Stephen Royle
R4,592 Discovery Miles 45 920 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Hudson's Bay Company was one of the great merchant companies. Granted sole trading rights to a huge part what is now Canada they were coerced in the mid nineteenth century to set up a colonial administration on Vancouver Island to protect British interests at a time of growing expansionism from America to the south and possible threats from a Russian Alaska to the north. "Company, Crown and Colony" tells the story of the challenges they faced. Drawing on rich archival resources the author provides a detailed account of this turbulent period, revealing the difficulties faced by a leading merchant company as they sought to resolve their conflicting interests of commerce and settlement in a complex situation, and providing fresh and lively insights into the emergence of a region of North America that is today one of the principal commercial centres of Canada.

The Origins of ISIS - The Collapse of Nations and Revolution in the Middle East (Paperback): Simon Mabon, Stephen Royle The Origins of ISIS - The Collapse of Nations and Revolution in the Middle East (Paperback)
Simon Mabon, Stephen Royle
R444 Discovery Miles 4 440 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The rapid expansion of ISIS and its swathe of territorial gains across the Middle East have been headline news since 2013. Yet much media attention and analysis has been focussed upon the military exploits, brutal tactics and radicalisation methods employed by the group. While ISIS remains a relatively new phenomenon, it is important to consider the historical and local dynamics that have shaped the emergence of the group in the past decade. In this book Simon Mabon and Stephen Royle provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the roots, tactics and ideology of the group, exploring the interactions of the various participants involved in the formative stages of ISIS. Based on original scholarly sources and first-hand research in the region, this book provides an authoritative and closely-analysed look at the emergence of one of the defining forces of the early twenty-first century.

Portrait of an Industrial City - Clanging Belfast 1750-1914 (Paperback, New ed.): Stephen Royle Portrait of an Industrial City - Clanging Belfast 1750-1914 (Paperback, New ed.)
Stephen Royle
R449 R421 Discovery Miles 4 210 Save R28 (6%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Clanging: Belfast in its industrial pomp must have been noisy: shipyards manipulating sheets of metal, the constant riveting being only one source of racket; the endless clatter from linen mills, the screeching of trams on unyielding rails, sirens and hooters marking time at the factories. There were steam trains and steam engines in addition to horses' hooves beating on the streets. The rumbustious, often riotous, eternally spirited Belfast people packed into the terraced houses as well as the alleys would have added their din, especially around the drinking dens. The noise is gone, one aspect of the urban past that cannot be recreated. However, the industrial city has left other remembrances, from many buildings which still grace the post-industrial city, to the humdrum details of citizens' lives revealed in newspapers, to more formal sources such as the corporation's minute books, the deliberations of the Linen Merchants' Association and the sometimes shocking revelations in parliamentary reports. Utilising where possible contemporary materials, this book details Belfast's development from the eighteenth century market town, where only hindsight can discover the seeds of industrial greatness, to the titanic city - in every respect - of the period prior to Great War, whose horrors were to usher in such changes. Belfast was a success: its unparalleled growth, its might in textiles, shipbuilding and other industries. However, the book cannot, does not, shy away from the darkness that imbued the clanging city, from the health problems of mill workers to the poverty behind the well-lit main streets a 'charnel house breaking in upon the gaiety and glitter of a bridal' as one description inelegantly had it. Then there were, of course, the 'intestine broils', the sectarian conflicts that blighted Belfast in the nineteenth century, as they were to do in the twentieth.

The Company's Island - St Helena, Company Colonies and the Colonial Endeavour (Paperback): Stephen Royle The Company's Island - St Helena, Company Colonies and the Colonial Endeavour (Paperback)
Stephen Royle
R1,376 Discovery Miles 13 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As English adventurer Francis Drake and his contemporaries opened up seaborne trade with Asia and the East, so dreams of untold wealth fuelled the appetites of European nations. A new form of co-operation arose between governments and entrepreneurs - the merchant company. Vital to the entire commercial and colonial endeavour, part of the story of Empire lies in the outposts they established."The Company's Island" focuses upon one such company colony - St Helena. With no indigenous population on the island, the East India Company had to establish a society from scratch but far from settling 'in love and amity' a repressive and turbulent regime ensued. The civilian population rebelled, the garrison mutinied, assassinating the governor, and a rebellion by black slaves was savagely punished. The result is a vivid, compelling tale involving issues of race, morality, gender, trade and defence within the context of Empire. Drawing on new archival material, the author sheds fresh light on an important yet little known aspect of the colonial endeavour.

The Company's Island - St Helena, Company Colonies and the Colonial Endeavour (Hardcover): Stephen Royle The Company's Island - St Helena, Company Colonies and the Colonial Endeavour (Hardcover)
Stephen Royle
R4,551 Discovery Miles 45 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"The Company's Island" provides the first extended account of the role of company colonies and the difficulties they faced in meeting the requirements of the Crown whilst simultaneously attempting to run a harmonious and successful community. Focusing on the island of St Helena and the colony which sprung from the presence of the East India Company there, Stephen Royle charts the growth of a society from scratch and explores the tensions which ensued 1; between soldiers and settlers, whites and blacks, company interests and the interests of the Crown. A rebellion by the civilian population, a mutiny in the garrison and a political assassination tell only part of the island7;s history as a company colony.
Drawing on a wealth of archival material, this book sheds new light on an important yet little known aspect of the colonial endeavour. The result is a vivid and compelling tale involving issues of race, morality, gender, trade and war within the context of Empire which will appeal to historians and geographers and to all those with an interest in colonialism, travel, trade and globalisation.
