Most people-including many legislators, regulators, and other
decision makers in the electric utility industry-have
misconceptions about how electric utilities really "work" and plan
for the future. This lack of understanding can lead to poorly
informed decisions and policies that directly affect the choices
utilities must make. Using easy-to-understand text and examples,
Electric Utility Resource Planning: Economics, Reliability, and
Decision-Making clarifies how utilities operate their systems and
prepare for the future. This explanation will show readers that
both expected and counterintuitive results can occur (i.e.,
conservation might result in higher air emissions, or lowering
costs could lead to higher electric rates). Taking readers step by
step through this process, the book (in the following order):
"Creates" a hypothetical utility Explains how and why a utility
operates its system of generating units Discusses the planning
methods that a utility would (or should) use Guides readers through
each stage of a planning analysis for the hypothetical utility,
examining various resource options (conservation, new power plants,
and solar) In addition, the author introduces four Fundamental
Principles of Resource Planning that should guide utilities. He
also offers opinions on how certain trends in utility regulation
and legislation can hinder utility planners' efforts to identify
and select the best resources for the utility's customers. With
this book, author Dr. Steven Sim applies his experience and
insights from more than two decades of resource planning for
Florida Power and Light (FPL). As one of the largest utilities in
the United States, FPL has faced a multitude of resource planning
challenges, and Dr. Sim has performed and supervised thousands of
analyses designed to meet these obstacles. He has also served as an
FPL witness in regulatory hearings on a wide variety of topics,
ranging from the economic implications of nuclear, conservation,
coal, gas, and other resource options, to the non-economic impacts
(air emissions, fuel usage, system reliability, etc.) they present.
This book presents a posthumous collection of previously
uncollected works of political theory written by Whittle Johnston.
Johnston believed that both the liberal tradition of political
thought and the realist tradition of international thought had
contributed much to humanity's store of political wisdom, but that
each had limitations that could most easily be recognized by its
encounter with the other. His method of accomplishing this task was
to examine the liberal conception of political life in general and
international political life in particular and then to explore the
realist critique of the liberal view, particularly as it was
expressed by three great twentieth-century realist thinkers, all of
whom were, in their various ways, skeptical of liberal assumptions:
Reinhold Niebuhr, Hans Morgenthau, and E. H. Carr. In doing so,
Johnston reveals the power of the realist outlook, but also the
areas in which it remains insufficient, and insufficient
particularly where it underestimates the complexity and prudence
that liberalism is capable of displaying. There have been studies
of both liberalism and realism, but no other work has put them into
conversation with each other in the way that this book does.
In 2012, using easy-to-understand text and examples, the 1st
edition of this book explained how electric utilities "work", and
how they plan (or should plan) for the future, by: "Creating" a
hypothetical electric utility. Explaining how (and why) this
utility will operate its system of generating units. Guiding
readers through a planning analysis for the utility, examining
various resource options (solar, new gas-fueled generation, and
conservation). Introducing four Fundamental Principles of Resource
Planning that should guide utilities as they plan for the future.
The 1st edition material, with significant updates, now appears as
Part I of the 2nd edition of this book. Part II then presents six
all-new chapters that address challenges (and opportunities) of
moving towards a zero-carbon future. Using the same hypothetical
utility, with its new goal to utilize solar and batteries to serve
100% of its customersâ energy with zero carbon emissions by a
future "target" year, Part II addresses many subjects, including:
The enormous amount of MW of new solar and batteries the utility
will need to be add. Why certain characteristics of new solar and
battery additions change as increasing amounts of these resources
are added. In the years prior to achieving its zero-carbon goal,
how the hourly operation of the utilityâs existing fossil-fueled
generators, plus the new solar, will change (and why the stability
of the transmission grid will be challenged). With this 2nd
edition, author Dr. Steven Sim again applies the experience and
insights he gained from more than 30 years of resource planning for
Florida Power & Light (FPL). As one of the largest electric
utilities in the U.S., FPL has faced a multitude of resource
planning challenges, including how to get to zero carbon. During
this time period, Dr. Sim performed and directed thousands of
analyses designed to address these challenges. He also served as an
expert witness in dozens of regulatory hearings addressing both the
economics of resource options, and the non-economic impacts (air
emissions, system reliability, fuel usage, etc.) associated with
these options.

This book is the first resource to review the influence of climate
change on urban and public pests such as mosquitoes, flies, ticks,
and wood pests, with respect to population, distribution, disease,
damage and control. It systematically addresses how the impact of
climate change on pests in urban areas differs from natural areas,
focusing on the increased temperatures of urban locations, the
effect of natural disasters, the manner of land use and the
consequences of human habitation. Climate Change Impacts on Urban
Pests: - covers key information on how climate change and urban
pests affect human health - includes coverage of the impacts of
natural disasters such as flooding looks at issues which could
influence the management of pests - explores a range of
international opinion from recognised authorities covering six
continents. Presenting up-to-date knowledge, this book is an
essential resource for researchers in urban pests, entomology and
public health, as well as scientists, environmentalists and policy
makers involved in studies on climate change.
The battle for power in the Celtic kingdom of Britannia, reaches a
climax when families turn against each other and the most
trustworthy can no longer be trusted. It is the sixth century and
the growth of immigrants threaten the Celtic way of life for the
wealthy and elite. It appears that only one man, King Arthur, can
reunite the divided parties, but he has been lured into a untimely
war with the Romans. When he is away fighting in Gaul (France) his
wife Guinevere seizes her chance at power. Guinevere's great rival
is Morgan Le Fay, she becomes embroiled with the Gods of Avalon
when she asks for their help. Vivienne, the Goddess of the lake,
helps her in her quest, but has her own selfish agenda. Vivienne
allows her special creatures, the fairies, to assist Lady Morgan
and in so doing changes the balance of power throughout the land.
Eros, the King of the fairies, undergoes a physical transformation,
while others including Guinevere and Morgan undergo a more
spiritual one. Steeped in intrigue and double dealing the
protagonist, Lady Morgan, doesn't know who to trust as friend begin
to betray friend. Against a background of fear and loathing the
story of Joseph of Arimathea's Holy treasure unfolds. All the main
characters are after the Holy Grail, but who will capture it? Is
the treasure even real, or only a legend? This is volume one of a
trilogy of quests, as the well known Arthurian characters battle;
magic, gods, dragons, war, famine, mystery and witchcraft to find
their objectives. The work is inspired by many great writers who
have in the past, put pen to paper to bring adventure and life to
the medieval myth of King Arthur. Such authors include: Malory,
Geoffrey of Monmouth, Chretien de Troyes, Tennyson and go on up to
recent times with Tolkien, C.S.Lewis and Marion Bradley. The most
recent mentioned, explores the proto-feminist priestess of Avalon
(Morgan Le Fay). This trilogy will follow on from that. The battle
of good versus evil, Christianity versus Paganism continues but the
definition has now become blurred. Who is good and who is evil
becomes impossible to distinguish as we see unfold a whole new
world.

My belief is that African Americans view life as an American
differently then any other nationality born in America. Many times
we allow those views to bind us preventing us from moving forward.
My objective for writing this book is to get all to see the bigger
picture concerning this life. Everything man has and will create is
done with purpose; the creation of humanity is no different. Each
and every one of us is created with purpose, purpose that has been
placed in us through Him which all things were created. This book I
believe touches on some sensitive subjects in which you may or may
not agree, but if it gets you to think and look at things more
closely then I am moving toward fulfilling my purpose, which is
contributing my small part toward helping you to discover your
purpose. In spite of it all, We are More than Conquerors.
