represents a major challenge for physicians-not just in respiratory
medicine, but across a range of specialties. This book, with a
multidisciplinary authorship of the highest standard, presents the
most up-to-date thinking on all aspects of the condition, from
epidemiology to clinical manifestations and treatment options. Full
coverage is given to both respiratory and non-respiratory aspects.
The basic science that underlies the disease and its progression is
evaluated in detail, and placed into its correct clinical context.
Possible future advances are covered in a concluding section. The
editors-all leading figures in the field with international
reputations-have compiled the definitive work on the subject in a
single volume. The book is fully comprehensive and evidence based
and will be an essential addition to the bookshelves of all whose
practice involves the care and treatment of patients with
sarcoidosis.

Bacteria have evolved with extraordinary abilities to regulate
aspects of their behavior (such as gene expression) in response to
signals in the intracellular and extracellular environment. Key to
this are the diverse macromolecules (proteins or RNA) that sense
change through direct interactions with chemical or physical
stimuli. In recent years, there have been tremendous advances in
understanding the structure and function of these signal receptors,
and how interaction with the signal triggers changes in their
activity and downstream events. For some systems, this
understanding extends to the atomic level. In this unique book, an
international team of experts reviews a selection of important
model systems, providing a timely snapshot of the current state of
research in the field. Sensory Mechanisms in Bacteria opens with an
introductory chapter that reviews the diversity of signal
recognition mechanisms, illustrating the breadth of the field.

The lung forms an integral part of the body's immune system and is
subject to a range of diseases which are either autoimmune in
nature or have clear-cut immunological abnormalities. "Autoimmune
Aspects of Lung Disease" provides a concise review of the lung's
role in the immune system and a detailed account of both primary
and secondary lung diseases which are characterised by
immunological perturbation or frank autoimmunity. The volume
presents a detailed, up-to-date account of disorders ranging from
infection to neoplasia and is written in both an informative and
stimulating style by a prestigious group of authors. The chapters
are extensively referenced and provide numerous insights into the
aetiopathogenesis and clinical features and treatment of
immunologically-linked pulmonary disease. The book is intended as
both an overview for physicians and scientists with an established
interest in diseases of the lung, immunologists seeking to learn
more about relevant disorders in the lung and general physicians,
whether specialists or in training, seeking to enrich their
knowledge of the links between the pulmonary and immune systems.
The third edition of this book provides new material on sleep
disordered breathing, the newer methods of staging of lung cancer,
interstitial lung diseases and infections all of which have
developed in importance since the last edition of the book. The
traditional areas of respiratory medicine remain strongly
represented and the new edition contains many new radiological
illustrations. The book contains integrated self-test questions,
illustrations and detailed explanations. It is designed to educate
as well as give answers to problems. The cases appear in random
order and at varying levels of difficulty, just as patients present
in practice. The Colour Review will appeal to a wide readership,
ranging from senior medical students and post-registration trainees
in internal medicine, to pulmonologists in training and practice,
for examination revision and continuing education.
