and many of its workers experienced injury and disease. However,
the experiences of the many disabled people within Britain's most
dangerous industry have gone largely unrecognised by historians.
This book looks at British coal through the lens of disability,
using an interdisciplinary approach to examine the lives of
disabled miners and their families. A diverse range of sources are
used to examine the economic, social, political and cultural impact
of disability in the coal industry, looking beyond formal coal
company and union records to include autobiographies, novels and
existing oral testimony. It argues that, far from being excluded
entirely from British industry, disability and disabled people were
central to its development. The book will appeal to students and
academics interested in disability history, disability studies,
social and cultural history and representations of disability in
literature. -- .
After years of frustration with the way Asperger's Syndrome was
being treated by mental health professionals I did some research
and learned how to cure myself of Autism. I am not talking about a
medical cure but instead a therapy or technique that works to
improve social thinking strategies and the ability to read social
context and understand it. I surrounded myself with real social
skills coaches who helped me learn body language, facial
expressions, and much more. They went into great detail about how
to position my feet and hold my hands when talking to someone. This
blew me away as this was nothing at all like what I had been
receiving in counseling. In this book you will learn how society
stresses Autism is not a mental illness then only provides mental
health treatment to people living with Autism. Talking about
feelings is not good enough to overcome Autism. If you really want
to overcome Autism and learn social skills then you must read about
my journey to see how I cured myself of Autism. This is a
mini-series with one book being released each week.

Bomber Crew was self-published by the author, Jack E. Thompson, in
1989. This second edition has been re-published to acknowledge the
60th anniversary of VE-Day, to commemorate 2005 as the Year of the
Veteran and to help celebrate the life of Jack E. Thompson
(1923-2003). Some additional material including photographs, not
available for the original version, have been added by the author's
son, Stephen Thompson.
Bomber Crew is the record of a tour of duty of the crew of the
Lancaster bomber G-George of Bomber Command 12 Squadron based at
RAF base Wickenby, Lincolnshire. This is a story of the bonds
formed among seven men, five Canadian with the RCAF and two English
with the RAF, bonds that lasted their lifetimes. This is the story
of the happenstance and chaos of "crewing up," of endless
"practice, practice, practice" sessions, and the excitement and
terror of late-night bombing runs over occupied Europe and deep
into Germany.
The author and his crew would suggest that their tour was very
ordinary and unremarkable. From data declassified post-war, they
learned otherwise, that it was remarkable that these seven crew
members survived the war and returned to civilian life. Only 40% of
Bomber Command aircrew survived the war, and not all of those
without physical or psychological injury.
Not long after Indiana University had won the NCAA championship in
1981, a young man of twenty was hurriedly riding his bicycle in
order to make it on time for a tennis tournament. He had plans for
returning to the game after having been sidetracked with the
"college life." Although he expected to attend graduate school, he
was hoping to play professional tennis one day. He never made it to
that tournament. A head-on collision with an automobile had crushed
his dreams and also his neck, resulting in a cervical spinal cord
injury. As he lay in the intensive care unit unable to move, he
listened to music on his Walkman to distract him from his terrible
predicament. His favorite tape, "The Lamb" by Genesis, seemed to
help keep his attitude positive and hopeful. The following months
are torturous and frustrating and he prays for a miracle;
near-death experiences that seem too mysterious to comprehend show
him that there is life beyond human existence. Then, after finally
making it to the rehabilitation unit, he meets other young men in
similar situations and they all struggle together to increase their
functional abilities. In this rare and candid memoir, Stephen
Thompson shares his many tribulations as he experiences new
beginnings, both physical and spiritual, and strives for the
ultimate goal of any spinal cord injury victim: to walk again.
