EU Foreign and Interior Policies - Cross-Pillar Politics and the Social Construction of Sovereignty (Hardcover): Stephen Stetter EU Foreign and Interior Policies - Cross-Pillar Politics and the Social Construction of Sovereignty (Hardcover)
Stephen Stetter
R3,999 Discovery Miles 39 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book offers an innovative theoretical and empirical analysis of integration in EU foreign and interior policies across the three pillars, from the Maastricht Treaty to the Treaty of Nice.

The establishment of the three pillar structure with the Maastricht Treaty has been one of the key transformations of European governance. This divided EU policies into three main areas: European Community, Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) and for the first time the two sovereignty related areas of foreign and interior policies became part of the formal governance structure of the EU.

This is the first volume to present a comparative perspective on how integration in both areas across the three pillars has contributed to the construction of a distinct sovereignty dimension of the EU. Drawing from sociological institutionalism and on the basis of the two case studies of EU Middle East and migration policies, it offers a comprehensive empirical analysis of cross-pillar policy-making dynamics in foreign and interior policies in the EU.

EU Foreign and Interior Policies will appeal to scholars and researchers interested in international relations, European Union politics and Middle East studies.

This book explains the respective elements involved in automated vehicles and processes. It provides detailed descriptions of fault-tolerant design, not offered in the existent scientific literature. With regard to fault-tolerant control, the focus is on innovative methods, which can accommodate not only uncertainties, but also shared and flexible redundant elements. The book is intended to present a concise guide for researchers in the field of fault-tolerant design and control, and to provide concrete insights for design and control engineers working in the field of automated vehicles and processes.

The Social Evolution of World Politics: Mathias Albert, Hauke Brunkhorst, Iver B. Neumann, Stephan Stetter The Social Evolution of World Politics
Mathias Albert, Hauke Brunkhorst, Iver B. Neumann, Stephan Stetter
R664 Discovery Miles 6 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How can we understand long-term change in world politics better? Based on readings of thinkers as diverse as Habermas, Foucault and Luhmann, the contributors to this volume propose a framework for understanding such change in terms of social evolution. They show that processes of social learning and unlearning are key to understanding the long-term historical evolution of complex societies, and propose to approach these with the core concepts of autonomization, hierarchical complexity, and co-evolution. Four case studies illustrate this social evolutionary perspective to the study of world politics, examining the evolution of forms of organizing political authority, of conflicts, of diplomacy, of law as boundary condition.

Sustainable Natural Hazard Management in Alpine Environments (Paperback, 2009 ed.): Eric Veulliet, Stoetter Johann, Hannelore... Sustainable Natural Hazard Management in Alpine Environments (Paperback, 2009 ed.)
Eric Veulliet, Stoetter Johann, Hannelore Weck-Hannemann
R4,524 Discovery Miles 45 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the recent past a marked increase of the damages caused by natural hazard processes has been documented, for example by the Munich Re-Insurance. On a regional scale, a similar development can be observed in mountain regions such as the Alps, where it is particularly a rise in flood events that has caused the maximum amount of economic damage. Three major aspects may help to explain this phenomenon: The changing frequency-magnitude relationship of the natural hazard processes, the multiplication of the damage potential due to the socio-economic change, and the non-adequate way of coping with the changing risk by the official authorities. As a consequence, this book tries to address key questions related to these developments and to give answers to these problems. Question 1: How can the strategies for coping with the rise in extreme flooding be improved? Question 2: How can the damage potential and other socio-economic aspects be quantified? Question 3: How can new computer based technologies contribute to minimizing the risks related to alpine natural hazards? An initial chapter gives an overview of the global change aspects of natural hazards and their related risks. While three chapters outline answers to question 1, four chapters discuss question 2. Five chapters give examples of new technologies.

Ilcheong Yi, Alexandra Kaasch, Kelly Stetter
R2,382 R2,148 Discovery Miles 21 480 Save R234 (10%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Drawing on international case studies from emerging economies and developing countries including South Africa, India, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Tunisia, Indonesia, China and Russia, this book examines the rise, nature and effectiveness of recent developments in social policy in the Global South. By analysing these new emerging trends, the book aims to understand how they can contribute to meaningful change and whether they could offer alternative solutions to the social, economic and environmental policy challenges facing low-income countries within a contemporary global context. It pays particular attention to reforms and innovations relating to the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the move away from a welfare state, towards a ‘welfare multitude’, in which new actors, such as civil society organisations, play an increasingly important role in social policy.

Knowledge Representation and Relation Nets (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999): Aletta E. Geldenhuys,... Knowledge Representation and Relation Nets (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999)
Aletta E. Geldenhuys, Hendrik O. Van Rooyen, Franz Stetter
R4,485 Discovery Miles 44 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Knowledge Representation and Relation Nets introduces a fresh approach to knowledge representation that can be used to organize study material in a convenient, teachable and learnable form. The method extends and formalizes concept mapping by developing knowledge representation as a structure of concepts and the relationships among them. Such a formal description of analogy results in a controlled method of modeling `new' knowledge in terms of `existing' knowledge in teaching and learning situations, and its applications result in a consistent and well-organized approach to problem solving. Additionally, strategies for the presentation of study material to learners arise naturally in this representation. While the theory of relation nets is dealt with in detail in part of this book, the reader need not master the formal mathematics in order to apply the theory to this method of knowledge representation. To assist the reader, each chapter starts with a brief summary, and the main ideas are illustrated by examples. The reader is also given an intuitive view of the formal notions used in the applications by means of diagrams, informal descriptions, and simple sets of construction rules. Knowledge Representation and Relation Nets is an excellent source for teachers, courseware designers and researchers in knowledge representation, cognitive science, theories of learning, the psychology of education, and structural modeling.

Analysis of Discretization Methods for Ordinary Differential Equations (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Analysis of Discretization Methods for Ordinary Differential Equations (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1973)
Hans J. Stetter
R1,587 Discovery Miles 15 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Due to the fundamental role of differential equations in science and engineering it has long been a basic task of numerical analysts to generate numerical values of solutions to differential equations. Nearly all approaches to this task involve a "finitization" of the original differential equation problem, usually by a projection into a finite-dimensional space. By far the most popular of these finitization processes consists of a reduction to a difference equation problem for functions which take values only on a grid of argument points. Although some of these finite difference methods have been known for a long time, their wide applica bility and great efficiency came to light only with the spread of electronic computers. This in tum strongly stimulated research on the properties and practical use of finite-difference methods. While the theory or partial differential equations and their discrete analogues is a very hard subject, and progress is consequently slow, the initial value problem for a system of first order ordinary differential equations lends itself so naturally to discretization that hundreds of numerical analysts have felt inspired to invent an ever-increasing number of finite-difference methods for its solution. For about 15 years, there has hardly been an issue of a numerical journal without new results of this kind; but clearly the vast majority of these methods have just been variations of a few basic themes. In this situation, the classical text book by P."

World Society and the Middle East - Reconstructions in Regional Politics (Hardcover, Updated and Rev): S Stetter World Society and the Middle East - Reconstructions in Regional Politics (Hardcover, Updated and Rev)
S Stetter
R1,569 Discovery Miles 15 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This title offers a novel cross-disciplinary theoretical perspective on conflict and conflict transformation in world society. The Middle East will continue to be a focus for theories of Conflict Studies and IR for some time to come. This book offers a new perspective (modern systems theory) on the study of conflicts. It covers conflict in Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Jordan plus Egypt as well as Israel - the types of domestic, inter-state and global conflict dimensions which emanate from this region are at the heart of any analysis of conflict (and cooperation) dynamics in the entire Arab-Israeli region. It integrates the study of conflicts in the Middle East region into a modern systems theoretical framework.

Ulrich Kulisch, Hans J. Stetter
R1,571 Discovery Miles 15 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Scientific Computation with Result Verification has been a persevering research topic at the Institute for Applied Mathematics of Karlsruhe University for many years. A good number of meetings have been devoted to this area. The latest of these meetings was held from 30 September to 2 October, 1987, in Karlsruhe; it was co-sponsored by the GAMM Committee on "Computer Arithmetic and Scientific Computation." - - This volume combines edited versions of selected papers presented at this confer ence, including a few which were presented at a similar meeting one year earlier. The selection was made on the basis of relevance to the topic chosen for this volume. All papers are original contributions. In an appendix, we have supplied a short account of the Fortran-SC language which permits the programming of algorithms with result verification in a natural manner. The editors hope that the publication of this material as a Supplementum of Computing will further stimulate the interest of the scientific community in this important tool for Scientific Computation. In particular, we would like to make application scientists aware of its potential. The papers in the second chapter of this volume should convince them that automatic result verification may help them to design more reliable software for their particular tasks. We wish to thank all contributors for adapting their manuscripts to the goals of this volume. We are also grateful to the Publisher, Springer-Verlag of Vienna, for an efficient and quick production."

Defect Correction Methods - Theory and Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1984): K. Boehmer,... Defect Correction Methods - Theory and Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1984)
K. Boehmer, H.J. Stetter
R1,567 Discovery Miles 15 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ten years ago, the term "defect correction" was introduced to characterize a class of methods for the improvement of an approximate solution of an operator equation. This class includes many well-known techniques (e.g. Newton's method) but also some novel approaches which have turned out to be quite efficient. Meanwhile a large number of papers and reports, scattered over many journals and institutions, have appeared in this area. Therefore, a working conference on "Error Asymptotics and Defect Corrections" was organized by K. Bohmer, V. Pereyra and H. J. Stetter at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach in July 1983, a meeting which aimed at bringing together a good number of the scientists who are active in this field. Altogether 26 persons attended, whose interests covered a wide spectrum from theoretical analyses to applications where defect corrections may be utilized; a list of the participants may be found in the Appendix. Most of the colleagues who presented formal lectures at the meeting agreed to publish their reports in this volume. It would be presumptuous to call this book a state-of-the-art report in defect corrections. It is rather a collection of snapshots of activities which have been going on in a number of segments on the frontiers of this area. No systematic coverage has been attempted. Some articles focus strongly on the basic concepts of defect correction; but in the majority of the contributions the defect correction ideas appear rather as instruments for the attainment of some specified goal.

Stephan Stetter, Mitra Moussa Nabo
R1,811 Discovery Miles 18 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drawing from theories of world society and from historical-sociological theories the book studies the past, present, and future of Middle East Christianity. It focuses on the interplay between local practices and post-colonial entanglements in global modernity. The chapters of this book engage, inspired by these theories, key empirical dynamics that affect Middle East Christianity. This includes a historical overview on the history of Christians in the region, the relationship between Islam and Christianity, as well as case studies on the Maronites in Lebanon, Egypt's Copts, the role of Protestant missionaries in the 19th century, processes of individualization amongst Middle East Christians, as well as papal diplomacy in the region.

Dietrich Jung, Stephan Stetter
R2,703 Discovery Miles 27 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book brings together theories of world society with poststructuralist and postcolonial work on modern subjectivity to understand the universalising and particularising processes of globalisation. It addresses a theoretical void in global studies by attending to the co-constituted process through which modern subjectivities and global processes emerge and interact. The editors outline a key problem in global studies, which is a lack of engagement between the local/particular/individual and the 'universalising' processes in which they are situated. The volume deals with this concern with contributions from historical sociologists, poststructuralist and postcolonial scholars and by focusing in the Middle East, religion in global modernity and non-human subjectivities.
