Knowing Britten is a vivid and insightful account of Steuart
Bedford's long association with both Britten the man and his music
The conductor and pianist Steuart Bedford (199-2021) could not
remember a time when he did not know Benjamin Britten. His mother,
Lesley Duff, sang with the English Opera Group in the premieres of
The Rape of Lucretia and Albert Herrring in the late 1940s, and the
family was closely involved with Britten and Pears for many years.
Following his music studies and time on the music staff at
Glyndebourne, Bedford joined the English Opera Group, gradually
becoming Britten's trusted surrogate conductor. As Britten's health
began to fail, Before took on responsibility for the premiere of
Death in Venice, including its US premiere at the Metropolitan
Opera, New York, and the dramatic cantata Phaedra among others.
For voice and piano or guitar This volume contains newly edited
versions of all Walton's songs for voice and piano, together with
Anon in Love for voice and guitar and songs from radio plays. It
also includes the first publication of the scores of the orchestral
versions of Anon in Love and A Song for the Lord Mayor's Table.
Walton wrote songs throughout his life, the first, 'Tell me where
is Fancy bred?', written when he was a chorister at Christ Church,
Oxford, the last, A Song for the Lord Mayor's Table, a song-cycle
for Elisabeth Schwarzkopf written in the early 1960s. They all
reveal his ear for word-setting, an imaginative response to the
text, and an ability to conjure striking musical images from his
chosen material.
for SATB, baritone solo and orchestra A newly engraved edition of
this vibrant choral work and fully compatible with the new Walton
Edition full score. There are minor adjustments to the piano
reduction to improve playability and the text underlay is now
English only, as Walton's original.
Walton's Belshazzar's Feast is a cornerstone of the modern choral
repertory. Commissioned by the BBC and premiered at the Leeds
Festival in 1931, the works sets texts selected and arranged from
the Bible by Osbert Sitwell. With its commanding baritone
narrative, colourful orchestration, and jubilant choral finale,
this dramatic re-telling of a well-known Biblical story is as
popular today as it was at its premiere almost eighty years ago.
