Chivalry and the Medieval Past (Paperback): Katie Stevenson, Barbara Gribling Chivalry and the Medieval Past (Paperback)
Katie Stevenson, Barbara Gribling; Contributions by Katie Stevenson, David W. Allan, Antti Matikkala, …
R802 R719 Discovery Miles 7 190 Save R83 (10%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

An examination of the ways in which the fluid concept of "chivalry" has been used and appropriated after the Middle Ages. One of the most difficult and complex ethical and cultural codes to define, chivalry has proved a flexible, ever-changing phenomenon, constantly adapted in the hands of medieval knights, Renaissance princes, early modern antiquarians, Enlightenment scholars, modern civic authorities, authors, historians and re-enactors. This book explores the rich variations in how the Middle Ages were conceptualised and historicised to illuminate the plurality of uses of the past. Using chivalry as a lens through which to examine concepts and uses of the medieval, it provides a critical assessment of the ways in which medieval chivalry became a shorthand to express contemporary ideals, powerfully demonstrating the ways in which history could be appropriated. The chapters combine attention to documentary evidence with what material culture can tell us, in particular using the built environment and the landscape as sources to understand how the medieval past was renegotiated. With contributions spanning diverse geographic regions and periods, it redraws current chronological boundaries by considering medievalism from the late Middle Ages to the present. Katie Stevenson is Senior Lecturer in Late Mediaeval History and Director of the Institute of Scottish Historical Research at the University of St Andrews; Barbara Gribling is a Junior Research Fellow in the Department of History at Durham University. Crime, Disorder, and the Risorgimento - The Politics of Policing in Bologna (Paperback, Revised): Steven C. Hughes Crime, Disorder, and the Risorgimento - The Politics of Policing in Bologna (Paperback, Revised)
Steven C. Hughes
R1,002 Discovery Miles 10 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides a meticulous examination of the ideology, structure, and functions of the papal police as they operated in the city and province of Bologna in the period before Italian unity, and in doing so offers an important new interpretation of the Risorgimento. The author argues that after the Restoration the new police soon found themselves incapable of dealing effectively with overwhelming problems of crime and public order. In allowing Bologna's elites to arm themselves in posse-style "citizen patrols" on two occasions, the papal government had opened the doors to reform and, eventually, revolution.

This 1994 book provides a meticulous examination of the ideology, structure, and functions of papal police as they operated in the city and province of Bologna in the period before Italian unity. In doing so, it also offers an important new perspective on the Risorgimento in the region. The author argues that after the Restoration the papal government maintained much of Napoleon's police apparatus in order to enhance its absolute power as an administrative monarchy; but the new police soon found themselves incapable of dealing effectively with the prevailing problems of the day, including political conspiracy, rampant unemployment, widespread poverty, and endemic crime in city and countryside alike. In 1828 and 1847 the papal government was forced to allow Bologna's elites to arm themselves in posse-style 'citizen patrols'. On each occasion the patrols became a rallying point of reform and, eventually, revolution.

The message is a simple one. Verbal communication is a vital key to success in this new century. Highly developed verbal communication skills give you an edge to keep abreast with the fast pace of the times. Developing your public speaking skills will greatly improve your communication skills. We all admire people who can get ideas across in a clear manner, people who speak with knowledge and passion....these are the people who excel. My question to you is; would you like to be one of these people? Now let me ask you a few more questions; does the thought of getting up to speak in front of other people scare you almost witless? Is it hard to find the right words to convey your thoughts, or worse, do you get up to speak and draw a complete blank? Do you get sweaty palms, butterflies, and all those other wonderful anxiety symptoms when you are in front of others speaking? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then let me ask you this; do you want to learn how to create a confident and enthusiastic way to deliver presentations? Do you want to have the skills to get up in front of people and actually enjoy the moment? Do you want to have the audience excited to see you arrive on stage, and sorry to see you leave? Speak & Win is a book that I have created for you. The you who is afraid to deliver that speech; the you that's afraid to make that presentation, and most importantly, the you who wants to be more, and have more. So join me on this adventure, and learn how to SPEAK AND WIN
