Bipolar Disorder in Youth - Presentation, Treatment and Neurobiology (Hardcover): Stephen M. Strakowski, Melissa P. Delbello,... Bipolar Disorder in Youth - Presentation, Treatment and Neurobiology (Hardcover)

R3,047 Discovery Miles 30 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Bipolar disorders affect up to 3% of the world's population and are the 6th leading cause of disability worldwide. The estimated annual costs of bipolar disorder approach $50 billion in the United States, and the associated societal and personal suffering is immeasurable. Bipolar disorder is a lifelong illness that typically begins in mid-adolescence, thereby disrupting healthy developmental processes. It is also a progressive illness, making early intervention even more critical. As the disorder presents differently in youth as it does in adults, considerable controversy exists around the diagnosis in young people. The neurobiological factors leading to the onset of bipolar disorder reflect abnormalities in adolescent brain development. Bipolar disorder is strongly heritable and therefore, these developmental abnormalities likely represent the culmination of processes that precede the expression of symptoms. Current studies of children who are at risk for bipolar disorder are identifying these processes. Again, controversy exists about how to move these neuroscience gains forward to help affected individuals and, particularly to manage children at risk to delay or prevent the onset or progression of bipolar disorder. With these considerations in mind, Bipolar Disorder in Youth provides a timely, focused review of the diagnosis, treatment, and neurobiology of bipolar disorder in youth. It addresses current controversies and resolves those in which evidence is available. The book is organized into three sections based on these topics to provide comprehensive discussions to aid clinicians managing these individuals in their practices, as well as scientists trying to advance the field. The three editors are widely recognized experts in bipolar disorder, and the authors of each chapter represent international experts in the respective topics. Consequently, this book is the most comprehensive volume available discussing this important population and is a 'must' for the libraries of clinicians and scientists working with bipolar children and adolescents.

Physicians who choose to serve in public-sector mental healthcare settings and physicians-in-training assigned to public-sector mental health clinics may not be fully prepared for the many roles of the public and community psychiatrist. Public and Community Psychiatry is a concise guide for the resident and early-career psychiatrist called upon to serve in the roles of public-sector clinician, team member, advocate, administrator, and academician. Each chapter includes a concise description of these various roles and responsibilities and offers engaging examples of the public psychiatrist at work, as well as case-based problems typical of those faced by the public psychiatrist. Each chapter also features works of art and literature, usually from the public domain, in order to incorporate the core strengths of medical humanities into the dialogue of public-sector mental healthcare. This book aims to provide a level of support to psychiatrists that fosters their desire, individually and collectively, to serve the poor and the marginalized with grit and determination, and to broadly consider their potential to improve not only their patients' well-being, but also these patients' incorporation into their respective communities.

Bipolar disorder is among the most common conditions affecting humankind and one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. It is a complex and dynamic psychiatric condition that makes it difficult to both understand and manage. However, with good management, people affected by bipolar disorder can lead very successful lives. This book was written specifically with new psychiatrists and mental health practitioners in mind to facilitate their ability to care for this condition. Chapters review clinical presentation and epidemiology, etiology and neurobiology, and treatment of bipolar disorder.

The American Psychiatric Association Publishing Textbook of Mood Disorders (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Charles B.... The American Psychiatric Association Publishing Textbook of Mood Disorders (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Charles B. Nemeroff, Alan F. Schatzberg, Natalie Rasgon, Stephen M. Strakowski
R4,033 Discovery Miles 40 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This new edition of The American Psychiatric Association Publishing Textbook of Mood Disorders is a systematic and painstaking reconceptualization of its predecessor. Under new editorial direction and with a revised roster of expert contributors, the second edition is an utterly current, clinically competent, and comprehensive text that will become an instant classic. The book is structured for learning and easy reference, moving deftly from symptomatology and epidemiology to pathogenesis and on to somatic interventions, cognitive-behavioral interventions, and psychotherapy. The latest science on genetics and epigenetics, brain imaging, and neurobiology are also examined in depth. Critically important to the clinician is the section on management of mood disorders, which provides treatment guidelines for major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, as well as information on understanding, and preventing, suicide in children, adolescents, and adults. Finally, perspectives are offered on depression among women, children, and geriatric patients, as well as on depression across cultures. Practicing psychiatrists, residents, and students alike will benefit from the book's inclusive coverage. Topics new to this edition include the following: * Treatment-resistant depression-its definition and approaches to its treatment-is addressed in a dedicated chapter that covers diagnostic accuracy, pseudoresistance, comorbidity, pharmacological management, adjunctive strategies, psychotherapy, neuromodulation, and novel and experimental therapies.* Investigational agents, most notably ketamine and its relatives, constitute an exciting frontier in the treatment of mood disorders, and the clinical application, routes of delivery, dosing, risks, and clinical trials are explored in a dedicated chapter that is both rigorous and thorough.* There is compelling evidence that childhood maltreatment (defined as exposure to emotional, physical, and sexual abuse and neglect before the age of 18 years) is a prominent risk factor for the development of mood disorders as well as for a pernicious course and poor treatment response in mood disorders. These findings, as well as the underlying neurobiological and environmental interactions that may contribute to the development of mood disorders, are examined thoroughly and thoughtfully.* As our understanding of immune function in mood disorders has grown, psychoneuroimmunology has emerged as a focus of study likely to make major contributions to clinical practice in the coming decades. The book updates readers on this promising area of research. Over the last decade, depression has emerged as the leading cause of disability worldwide, with significant attendant morbidity and mortality. The American Psychiatric Association Publishing Textbook of Mood Disorders equips clinicians and trainees with the knowledge they need to alleviate suffering in their patients with mood disorders.

Depression (Paperback): Madhukar H. Trivedi Depression (Paperback)
Madhukar H. Trivedi; Series edited by Steven M. Strakowski
R3,020 Discovery Miles 30 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a serious, debilitating, life-shortening illness that affects many persons of all ages and backgrounds. The lifetime risk for MDD is 7-12% for men and 20-25% for women (Kessler et al., 2003). MDD is a disabling disorder that costs the U.S. over $200 billion per year in direct and indirect costs (Greenberg et al., 2015), and is the leading cause of disability worldwide (WHO, 2018). Depression also has detrimental effects on all aspects of social functioning (e.g., self-care, social role, and family life, including household, marital, kinship, and parental roles). While there have been several treatments that are efficacious, many individuals suffering from depression experience life-long challenges due to the chronic and episodic nature of the disease. Identifying strategies to find the right treatments for the right patients is critical. Ongoing research has explored the importance of examining physiologic biomarkers, as well as clinical characteristics to gain a better understanding of subtypes of depression, which will lead to improved treatments and better outcomes. This book provides an introduction to the etiology and pathophysiology of depression, common comorbidities and differential diagnoses, pharmacotherapy strategies, psychotherapeutic and neuromodulation interventions, novel and non-traditional treatment strategies, and considerations in special populations.
