Dictionary - Mtanthauziramawu: Chichewa / Chinyanja - English //
English - Chichewa / Chinyanja (3rd Edition). The English language
has acquired an important position in the societies of Central and
Southern Africa. However, the vernacular languages have remained
indispensable vehicles of communication. For more than 15 million
people in Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe
and South Africa, Chinyanja or Chichewa has become the most
important language of daily life. The language has gained importance
and strength by developments in its written and oral use, and
because an increasing number of its speakers have come to discover
and emphasise their common linguistic heritage and practice. In
that way it has become an intermediary language for all Malawians,
and for many ethnic groups in the whole of Central and Southern
Africa. This edition of the Chichewa / Chinyanja Dictionary has
more than 43,000 entries from and into English. It is an instrument
for Africans and expatriates, foreign workers and visitors,
students and teachers, and for those who deal with English and
Chichewa at a scientific or scholarly level. May it reduce the
language barrier between users of English and of Chichewa /
Chinyanja.
Jesus Christ is King of God's Church. However who governs the
Church under him? How is the Church to be ruled? How do these
questions relate to the Word of God? This book, written by a
Lecturer at Zomba Theological College and a Minister in the
Presbyterian Church of Central Africa, investigates the origins and
characteristics of Presbyterian church-rule after service in both
The Netherlands and Malawi.
This book provides a succinct historical overview of Christianity
in Africa. It is written in the tradition of the existing studies
of indigenous and indigenised Christianity on the African
continent, considered from Southern perspectives, such as those by
F.J. Verstraelen, Ogbu U. Kalu and J. Hildebrandt.
According to popular thought, it was the doctrine of Justification
that divided Rome and the Reformation in the 16th Century. However
in a broader theological interpretation, the real breaking point
was the question of the Church and Sacraments. The issue of Church
and Sacraments has also remained important in the African context.
Theology from an African perspective requires an Ecclesiology that
rests of the Scriptures and that is sensitive and relevant to the
specific features of African culture. This study aims to contribute
to these discussions.
The ancient Church of the North African province of the Roman
Empire still captures the imagination of many modern people, who
marvel its rapid growth, and are curious about the schisms and
divisions within in that led to its almost complete eradication.
The present Church in Sub-Saharan Africa differs in many aspects
from the North African Church. But the central questions that
divided the early Church - of authority and moral behaviour of the
leaders - are still dividing the churches all over the world, not
least in Africa. The Donatists of the ancient church believed that
the church depended unequivocally on the moral qualities of its
officer bearers. In relation to the Church in Africa, this study
compares the Donatists' views to the opinions of the church
fathers, particularly Augustine, on holiness, authority and
catholicity.
