This book examines the most recent transformations in the
automobile industry. In particular it analyzes the impact of the
new forms of industrial restructuring on production organization
and the organization of labor and employee relations within Fiat in
Italy, Volkswagen in Brazil and Renault and MCC/Smart in France.
These case studies illustrate the most recent radical changes in
the industry (outsourcing and modular organisation) and show how
they have affected lean production.

This book traces a recovery of iconographic religious experience
and theology in the nineteenth century. In contrast to a
logocentric religious focus, which privileges texts and their
analysis, an iconographic focus emphasizes the visual and narrative
attributes of religion. The introduction sets the stage by
discussing the profound disquietude in the wake of Britain's
Religious Census of 1851, along with the various responses to a
perceived decline in religiosity. Two subsequent chapters deal with
the resurgence of iconographic religion from the perspective of
theology proper, arguing that contemporary theologians, such as
those represented by the Yale School of Divinity, held to a more
holistic as opposed to a fragmentary approach towards scripture. In
doing so they came to center the scriptural stories on the events
surrounding Christ's passion. The remaining chapters trace the
recovery of iconographic religion through American, Russian, and
British culture throughout the nineteenth century. Ultimately, this
book argues for a revision on the standard 'read' regarding these
artists and writers which holds that they were predominantly
secular in orientation.
Proving conclusively that `mad folks and proverbs reveal many truths', this is an authoritative and hugely browsable treasury of over 15,000 sayings, adages, and maxims commonly used in the United States and Canada. Based on oral as well as written sources, it covers thousands of uniquely American proverbs as well as those hailing from classical, biblical, European, and English literature. The culmination of over 40 years' research, the dictionary includes nuggets of wisdom on all aspects of life: weather, romance, food, families, politics, health, religion, and the arts, and includes thousands of proverbs that have never previously been recorded.
Originally published in 1915, this book provides a detailed
discussion of the relationship between metaphysics and material
reality, arguing for a reconciliation between Christian theology
and evolutionary theory. The main premise of the text is that there
can be no strict division between the soul and the corporeal
aspects of human life; the human being is viewed 'as a soul closely
tied to a mechanism.' Nonetheless, this closely intertwined
relationship is one in which the metaphysical aspect of existence
is regarded as the fundamental driving force, and biological
evolution is subordinated to spiritual progress. This book will be
of value to anyone with an interest in theology, philosophy and
theories of evolution.
First published in 1918, this book constitutes a restatement of the
Doctrine of the Holy Trinity from an evolutionary standpoint.
Implicit in this aim is the requirement that the truth of a
doctrine is not essentially attached to the terminology in which it
is expressed, so that the key idea survives as the original
terminology becomes archaic. The bulk of the text is devoted to
various aspects of the human personality, taking into account
modern discoveries but always assuming the prior existence of a
spiritual environment in which God is regarded as 'the Ground of
Reality'. The final chapter draws together these aspects in a
unified analysis of the relationship between humanity and
transcendence. This book will be of value to anyone with an
interest in evolution and the development of theology.
Originally published in 1924, this book presents the content of
four lectures delivered by the author at the University of
Cambridge during 1923 and 1924, as part of the Hulsean Lectures
series. Broadly speaking, the text is based around an examination
of the nature of being in its relationship with the process of
existence. The following topics are covered: 'Living and Thinking';
'Knowing and Loving'; 'The Known and the Loved'; 'Revelation and
Reality'. A preface and appendices are also provided. This book
will be of value to anyone with an interest in theology and
concepts of being.
Originally published in 1920, this book provides a concise
discussion of aesthetic evolution, putting forward the view that
the concept of beauty holds a position of fundamental importance in
the constitution of reality. Systematic exposition of the topic is
avoided in favour of a more nuanced account, in which aesthetic
expression is linked to the Christian idea of God, on one hand, and
the development of the human soul, on the other. An introduction
and an appendix on 'Art Forms in Development' are also included.
This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in aesthetic
theory and theology.
First published in 1914, as the second edition of a 1912 original,
this book provides a detailed discussion of the relationship
between evolution and the central Christian principle of atonement.
Intended 'as a restatement of certain fundamental doctrines of
Christianity from that point of view which the spirit of the age
forces upon us', the text attempts to reconcile concepts such as
sin and alienation from God with the biological focus of
evolutionary theory. The process of reconciliation necessarily
involves the belief that the biological aspect of human existence
can be logically connected to atonement, and the metaphysical
certainties entailed by it. This book will be of value to anyone
with an interest in theology, philosophy and the history of
science.
An examination of the form and character of recent transformations
in the international automobile industry. Using comparative and
national-based case study analysis, it explores the nature of such
recent developments (outsourcing, modularization, high performance
workplaces, etc.) and their impact on issues in the sector on a
world scale.
Convex polytopes are the analogues in space of any dimension of
convex plane polygons and of convex polyhedra in ordinary space.
This book describes a fresh approach to the classification of these
objects according to their symmetry properties, based on ideas of
topology and transformation group theory. Although there is
considerable agreement with traditional treatments, a number of new
concepts emerge that present classical ideas in a quite new way.
For example, the family of regular convex polytopes is extended to
the family of 'perfect polytopes'. Thus the familiar set of five
Platonic polyhedra is replaced by the less familiar set of nine
perfect polyhedra. Among the many unsolved problems that arise,
that of finding all perfect polytopes, and more generally all
perfect convex bodies, is perhaps the most attractive. This book
will be of value to specialists and graduate students in pure
mathematics, especially those studying symmetry theory, convex
bodies, and polytopes.
The wellerism--so called in English because it is a form of
expression typical or reminiscent of Sam Weller or his father, two
celebrated characters in Dickens's Pickwick Papers--is a major
subtype of the proverb. Known since Sumerian times, it has been
popular in most European languages and some African languages. As
defined by folklorists and proverb scholars, a wellerism consists
of three parts: a speech or statement (often a proverb),
identification of the speaker, and identification of the situation,
which gives the expression an ironic or humorous twist, often in
the form of a pun.
. "Prevention is better than cure," said the pig when it ran
away from the butcher.
. "We'll have to rehearse that," said the undertaker as the coffin
fell out of the car.
A Dictionary of Wellerisms is the first work to collect all of the
wellerisms recorded in the English language. Drawing on periodical
literature and other scholarly sources, Mieder and Kingsbury have
assembled, edited, and annotated a collection of wellerisms
including over 1500 texts found in British, American, Canadian, and
other English-language literatures and oral collections. Mieder's
preface, bibliography, and extensive introduction explaining the
history, meaning, and function of wellerisms, are supplemented by
an index of speakers and an index of situations.
Containing a wealth of wit and humor, A Dictionary of Wellerisms
is both entertaining and informative, appealing to the casual
browser as well as to students and scholars of literature,
psychology, folklore, linguistics, anthropology, and cultural
history."
