This innovative collection investigates the ways in which
television programs around the world have highlighted modernization
and encouraged nation-building. It is an attempt to catalogue and
better understand the contours of this phenomenon, which took place
as television developed and expanded in different parts of the
world between the 1950s and the 1990s. From popular science and
adult education shows to news magazines and television plays, few
themes so thoroughly penetrated the small screen for so many years
as modernization, with television producers and state authorities
using television programs to bolster modernization efforts.
Contributors analyze the hallmarks of these media efforts:
nation-building, consumerism and consumer culture, the education
and integration of citizens, and the glorification of the nation's
technological achievements.

Following World War II, Germany was faced not only with the
practical tasks of reconstruction and denazification, but also with
the longer-term mission of morally "re-civilizing" its citizens-a
goal that persisted through the nation's 1949 split. One of the
most important mediums for effecting reeducation was television,
whose strengths were particularly evident in the thousands of
television plays that were broadcast in both Germanys in the 1950s
and 1960s. This book shows how TV dramas transcended state
boundaries and-notwithstanding the ideological differences between
East and West-addressed shared issues and themes, helping to ease
viewers into confronting uncomfortable moral topics.
The emergence of high-speed computing has facilitated the
development of many exciting statistical and mathematical methods
in the last 25 years, broadening the landscape of available tools
in statistical investigations of complex data. Biostatistics: A
Computing Approach focuses on visualization and computational
approaches associated with both modern and classical techniques.
Furthermore, it promotes computing as a tool for performing both
analyses and simulations that can facilitate such understanding. As
a practical matter, programs in R and SAS are presented throughout
the text. In addition to these programs, appendices describing the
basic use of SAS and R are provided. Teaching by example, this book
emphasizes the importance of simulation and numerical exploration
in a modern-day statistical investigation. A few statistical
methods that can be implemented with simple calculations are also
worked into the text to build insight about how the methods really
work. Suitable for students who have an interest in the application
of statistical methods but do not necessarily intend to become
statisticians, this book has been developed from Introduction to
Biostatistics II, which the author taught for more than a decade at
the University of Pittsburgh.
This book tells the exciting story of the development of the
legendary performance Ford Escort, which became one of the most
successful rally cars of all time. Written in a way that readers
can relate to, it covers the road-going cars, the dealership
network and the dedicated Ford factory, as well as the illustrious
motorsport achievements. The author discusses the development of
Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO), the design of the twin-cam
engine and the production of the RS1600, Mexico and RS2000 models.
He also covers the development of Ford motorsport generally and the
Rallye Sport dealership network. At a time when interest in
performance Escorts from the 1970s has been never been higher and
the when the cars have featured on TV programmes, this book
provides all the information required for enthusiasts of 1970s
classic Ford Escorts.
