Contestations of Citizenship, Education, and Democracy in an Era of
Global Change: Children and Youth in Diverse International Contexts
considers the shifting social, political, economic, and educational
structures shaping contemporary experiences, understandings, and
practices of citizenship among children and youth in diverse
international contexts. As such, this edited book examines the
meaning of citizenship in an era defined by monumental global
change. Chapters from across both the Global South and North
consider emerging formations of citizenship and citizen identities
among children and youth in formal and non-formal education
contexts, as well as the social and civic imaginaries and practices
to which children and youth engage, both in and outside of schools.
Rich empirical contributions from an international team of
contributors call attention to the social, political, economic, and
educational structures shaping the ways young people view
citizenship and highlight the social and political agency of
children and youth amid increasing issues of polarization, climate
change, conflict, migration, extremism, and authoritarianism. The
book ultimately identifies emergent forms of citizenship developing
in formal and non-formal educational contexts, including those that
unsettle the nation-state and democracy. Edited by a team of
academics with backgrounds in education, citizenship, and youth
studies, this book will appeal to scholars, researchers, and
faculty who work across the broader field of youth civic engagement
and democracy, as well as international and comparative education
and citizenship. The Open Access version of this book, available at

The definitive history of coronations and the Royal Family, from
acclaimed writer Roy Strong. ’What is the finest sight in the
world? A Coronation. What do people talk most about? A Coronation.
What is delightful to have passed? A Coronation.’ Horace Walpole,
1761 As a boy of sixteen, Roy Strong watched the grand procession
carrying Queen Elizabeth II to her coronation. The spectacle was
considered the greatest public event of the century. But now, so
many years later, many people have little notion of what a
coronation is and are unaware of the rich resonances of the ritual,
or its deep significance in terms of the committal of monarch to
people. This book is the first of its kind – a comprehensive
history that sets each coronation into its political, social,
religious and cultural context. The story is one of constant
re-invention as the service has had to respond to all the changes
in fortune of the monarchy or the country: everything from
legitimising usurpers to reconciling a Catholic rite to the tenets
of Protestantism. It even had to be recreated from scratch after
the Restoration of Charles II in 1660. In this way, Strong tells
the story of the British monarchy since the tenth century, and
looks forward to the coronation of King Charles III. The musical
history alone is one of extraordinary richness – involving Henry
Purcell, Handel, Edward Elgar, William Walton – plus the
celebratory poetry, the art and the spectacular engravings
published at coronations are all explored, as is the more recent
role of photographers. The book particularly concentrates on
post-1603 developments, including the incredible story of the
Stuarts, when the crown jewels used for hundreds of years at
coronations were melted down as symbols of the hated Divine Right
of Kings. As Charles III succeeds to the throne and preparations
are made for his coronation, Strong speculates as to the revisions
now called for to its ritual and pageantry to meet the changes in
the role of the monarchy in the twenty-first century.
Triple bill of historical adventures. In 'The Eagle' (2010) Marcus
Aquila (Channing Tatum), a young soldier in 140 AD Roman-occupied
England, sets out to honour his father's memory by tracking down
the long-missing Roman Ninth Legion in which his father once
served. Accompanied by his British slave, Esca (Jamie Bell), Marcus
travels beyond Hadrian's Wall into the uncharted highlands of
Caledonia to confront its savage tribes and retrieve the lost
legion's golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth. In 'Gladiator'
(2000) Russell Crowe stars as Maximus, a general beloved of the
Emperor, Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), but feared by the
Emperor's son and heir, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). When Aurelius
dies and Commodus accedes to the throne, Maximus returns home to
find his wife and son killed and only just survives the murderous
dictates of the new Emperor himself. Sold into slavery then trained
as a gladiator, only thoughts of revenge keep Maximus going as he
prepares for a showdown at the Colosseum, presided over by
Commodus. In 'Robin Hood' (2010), Sir Robin of Loxley (Crowe)
returns from the Crusades to his home in the north of England.
There he comes up against the oppressive regime imposed by the
tyrannical new Sheriff of Nottingham (Matthew Macfadyen). Outraged
by the Sheriff's behaviour and the general state of the region,
Robin summons up a group of supporters and puts his formidable
archery skills to use in an effort to free the people from
corruption and political injustice.

Leslie Jamison It’s 22 December and Henry, Kate and Martin are
gathering with their partners and children at Henry and Alice’s
house in upstate New York. It's the first Christmas since their
mother passed and without her ever-present advice and gentle nudges
to connect with each other when they need it most, the siblings
have grown distant. Their differences are all too apparent, from
the lives they have forged for themselves to what they each want to
do with their sole inheritance: their mother’s house. As they try
and fail and try again to create new picture-perfect memories,
tensions and old resentments rise, but they are forced to unite
when a local family calls for help. Compassionate and wise, Flight
explores the meaning of family and home, and the gift of being
together. Praise for Lynn Steger Strong ‘Furious, aching and
razor sharp’ Emma Cline ‘A deeply intelligent and sneakily
moving novel about having the ground fall away beneath your feet.

for craving what's just out of reach’ Time magazine ‘Through
Elizabeth's experiences and in her propulsive voice, the novel
explores race, class, privilege, coincidence, family, friendship
and love’ Guardian ‘A smart, sharp novel’ Elle ‘Strong
strips away at the imbalance of advantages that ultimately injure
us all and the collisions that never cease. Yet, in this stunning
novel, she never loses sight of the irrepressible desire to love,
connect and forgive one another’ Observer
How do you predict eclipses at Stonehenge? Why do the Carnac
alignments follow geological fault lines? Was Avebury intentionally
sited precisely one seventh of a circle down from the north pole?
Why are so many stone circles egg-shaped or flattened? What is the
meaning of the designs in ancient rock art? Do you really have to
wait nineteen years to visit the remote site of Callanish? What
were the ancients up to? These are our oldest buildings, our first
messages, our earliest visual art. With eight authors, and packed

Hailed by Newbery winner Kelly Barnhill as “stunning, moving, and
marvelously strange,” this tale of a young girl who stumbles into
a magical realm ruled by a wicked witch is a haunting and
ultimately uplifting middle grade novel about grief, family, and
decades-old magic. Still grieving the loss of her mother, Eden
visits Safina Island, her ancestral home, as a healing balm. But
when she discovers an old sketchbook that belonged to her mother,
she’s haunted by the images she sees drawn there. A creepy
mansion covered with roots and leaves. A monstrous dog with
dagger-sharp teeth. And a tall woman with wind-blown hair and long,
sharp nails who is as beautiful as she is terrifying. Days later,
exploring the island alone, Eden follows a black cat through a rift
in the bright day. She stumbles into Everdark, a parallel world
where the sun never rises, where spirits linger between death and
the afterlife, and where everything from her mother’s drawings is
all too real—especially the Witch of Everdark, who wants to make
Eden her eternal daughter. Can Eden find a way to defeat the
witch’s magic? Or will she remain trapped in Everdark forever?
Create eight top-down beanies using a handy measuring template.
Every beanie begins at the crown the same way: by crocheting a half
double crochet circle and increasing until it measures the
dimensions on the template for the size of beanie you want to make.
From there, directions are included to create stylish, modern and
wearable designs for everyone in the family. The best part is that
these beanies work with any yarn weight, any hook size and any
gauge. Each beanie in the book is made using worsted-weight yarn.
This bestselling resource has been fully updated, putting formative
assessment at the heart of the Talk for Writing process and showing
how to help children love writing across the curriculum. By helping
children speak the language of non-fiction in a fun engaging way
before they attempt to write, the Talk for Writing approach builds
children's confidence and linguistic ability enabling them to craft
their own writing. In the new edition, this practical resource
offers: * Fully worked, tried and tested examples of how to apply
Talk for Writing to each non-fiction text type * A wide range of
fun activities helping children internalise how to express and link
text effectively * A process that co-constructs learning so that
children learn how to structure text and create toolkits of key
ingredients * Guidance for teachers in England on how to apply the
approach across the primary curriculum * An OLC including new
footage of Pie Corbett demonstrating Talk for Writing and new
footage of classes engaged in the approach * Advice on how to use
the DVD and handouts to train all staff in the approach * Evidence
of impact from cold to hot tasks Designed for busy teachers, Talk
for Writing across the Curriculum, second edition, will help
transform children's writing and attainment across the curriculum.
"This book celebrates the importance of talk in becoming and
growing as a writer: talk to share ideas; talk to analyse text;
talk to co-construct writing; and to talk to evaluate writing.
Throughout the book constantly underlines the importance of talk
for learning and the many creative and rich ways talk can be used
to help young writers internalise the rhythms and patterns of text.
Full of practical ideas and activities, the teaching combines being
creative and being critical in a wholly integrated way. An
invaluable resource for primary school teachers!" Debra Myhill,
Professor of Education at the University of Exeter, UK "The
teaching of reading has always taken priority in policy and
practice in literacy. Pie Corbett and Julia Strong have produced a
very welcome counterweight to that dominance in their Talk for
Writing Across the Curriculum. It is so refreshing to see
suggestions for teaching to bring elements of language together,
especially when done in such an entertaining and engaging way as
this. This new edition makes a 'classic' even better." David Wray,
Emeritus Professor, University of Warwick, UK "This latest update
of Pie and Julia's best-selling book reflects changes in the
curriculum, strengthening the T4W approach, using cold and hot
tasks, showing new worked examples of how to apply T4W to each
non-fiction type and placing formative assessment at the heart of
the process. It is exciting to see how all the best ideas and
findings in education are converging, evidenced in this latest 'up
to the minute' excellent publication." Shirley Clarke, Formative
Assessment Expert
