This book is an introduction to the challenges of independent
regulation, a new governance institution introduced in developing
economies in the wake of liberalization, to perform the role of a
surrogate for competitive markets. It examines, in the
Indian context, regulatory interpretation of key provisions of
energy laws and regulatory statutes, as manifest in the
adjudicatory orders of India’s petroleum and electricity
regulators. The objective is to assess regulatory interpretations
for consistency with the stated objectives of independent
regulation. Comparing regulatory interpretation of energy laws with
those of the higher judiciary, this study highlights the divergent
perspectives of regulators and the higher judiciary on the role of
independent regulation in a liberalized economy. In the process,
this research attempts to gauge, not only the extent of regulatory
expertise and independence in India’s energy space, but
crucially, the Indian government's commitment to independence of
regulators. The book also offers a glimpse of the operation of
checks and balances in a relatively new institution situated
outside the scope of the conventional Madisonian framework.Â
Framed against the backdrop of extant regulatory theories, this
book is of interest to regulators, policy makers, utility
executives, students of law, economics and regulatory studies as
well as lawyers interpreting regulators’ remit and role in a
liberalized economy.

South and Southeast Asia continue to be extremely critical regions,
deeply intertwined and bound in many ways by centuries of
intersecting histories. As the recent experiences of rapid and
transformative political and economic changes in several countries
in these two regions illustrate, these changes have significant
bearing on and are simultaneously affected by the legacy and
continued dynamic of dominant-minority group relations. To be sure,
while the dynamics of dominant-minority relations in each country
are distinct and often mitigated by distinct historical conditions,
the phenomenon of these dominant-minority relations, especially
along ethnic and religious fault lines, are deeply consequential to
many of the nations in these regions. This book, featuring eight
case studies, provides a multidisciplinary and multi-layered
assessment of the salience of the ethnic and religious realities in
shaping various South and Southeast Asian nations. Featuring
chapters on Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia,
Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, this volume provides a deep
appreciation of the challenges that these societies confront in
integrating and/or responding to specific ethnic and/or religious
based conflicts and tensions.
Risk Factors for Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke address the
relationship of a wide variety of vascular risk factors in the
spectrum of cerebrovascular diseases. An international group of
professionals the forefront of research and education, provide
their expertise about environmental and genetic determinants for
cerebrovascular disease and stroke. The authors aim to provide
information on developments of genetic, environmental and
lifestyle-related risk factors of various subtypes of stroke, and
MRI-markers of cerebrovascular disease. One in 2 men, and 1 in 3
women after the age of 40, will develop a stroke in their lifetime.
The burden of cerebrovascular disease extends far beyond that of
acute clinical events such as stroke, with "covert " vascular
injury on brain MRI being highly prevalent in older
community-dwelling persons. Therefore, improving our understanding
of the risk factors for stroke and cerebrovascular disease is of
paramount importance for improving prevention strategies. Secular
trends in stroke epidemiology, risk factors, and intermediate
markers (including carotid ultrasound, brain MRI and circulating
biomarkers) are presented. Cutting edge information on genetic,
environmental and lifestyle-related risk factors of various
subtypes of stroke and MRI-markers of cerebrovascular diseases are
displayed. This important book is an essential reference to
physicians interested in more effective primary prevention of
stroke.

This book examines the relationship between the newly independent
Indian state and its New Cinema movement. It looks at state
formative practices articulating themselves as cultural policy. It
presents an institutional history of the Film Finance Corporation
(FFC), later the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), and
their patronage of the New Cinema in India, from the 1960s to the
1990s, bringing into focus an extraordinary but neglected cultural
moment in Indian film history and in the history of contemporary
India. The chapters not only document the artistic pursuit of
cinema, but also the emergence of a larger field where the market,
political inclinations of the Indian state, and the more complex
determinants of culture intersect — how the New Cinema movement
faced external challenges from the industrial lobby and
politicians, as well as experienced deep rifts from within. It also
shows how the Emergency, the Janata Party regime, economic
liberalization, and the opening of airwaves all left their impact
on the New Cinema. The volume will be of great interest to scholars
and researchers of film studies, politics and public policy,
especially cultural policy, media and culture studies, and South
Asian studies.
This book explores state-of-art techniques based on methodological
and modeling aspects of solid and hazardous waste management,
specifically focusing on the recent trends in data acquisition and
robust modeling of the results obtained. In addition to an in-depth
description of the recent regulatory paradigm for solid waste
disposal and revealing insights into solid waste management models,
the book also addresses significant case history and remediation
methodologies for sustainable development in emerging economies
like India, China and Brazil. The main emphasis is on a suitable
regulatory framework with site-specific baseline calibration and
aimed at the robust modeling of contaminant transport and its
remediation. This is based on instructive case history in various
locations/regions worldwide. The focus on recent modeling and
quantification methods is the backbone of the book. One of the
major aspects discussed is the application of non-invasive methods
for studies related to the Earth's interior, which are increasingly
preferred over invasive techniques thanks to their economic
utility, as well as robust techniques for the interpretation of
geophysical data. The increasing demand for groundwater and energy
resources, especially for rapidly emerging countries with large
populations like India and China, has made it vital to derive safe
utilization approaches for our resources, including suitable waste
disposal and remediation methodologies that can be adopted for
'contaminated sites.'
This book features the proceedings of the 4th EAI International

The book presents debates around the concept of representation and
how these ideas apply to representation for selected disadvantaged
groups in India. It discusses empirical concerns and examines
political representation of these disadvantaged groups in
post-independence India. The experience of political representation
of SCs, STs: the method of election, role of political parties in
providing representation, role played by these groups in
parliamentary institutions, and the extent of their participation.
A second, significant area the volume attempts to cover is
representation of the Muslim minority in parliament and state
assemblies and understanding the reasons for their
under-representation since independence, and more particularly in
recent years.

engineering fields. Proposes novel opportunities and ideas for
developing or improving technologies in nanomedicine/nanobiology
and nanoremediation.
This book looks at how religious studies is framed and taught in
India. It addresses the contradiction between the country’s
vibrant religious life and the dearth of comparative and social
scientific religious studies programs across Indian universities.
The volume: • Studies the efforts by Rabindranath Tagore in
Santiniketan and Mohan Malaviya in Varanasi, to introduce and
institutionalize religious studies in India; • Discusses the
notions of religion and spirituality and situates the failure of
the ‘secularization thesis’ in the context of modern India; •
Provides concrete suggestions on how to develop religious studies
in relation to global citizenship and Indian cultural heritage with
the hope of initiating a larger discussion. A unique contribution
to the study of religion in society and education, the book will be
indispensable to students and researchers of theology, history,
philosophy, sociology, secularization, globalization, religious
studies, education studies, and South Asian studies.
