ASEAN and Regional Actors in the Indo-Pacific (1st ed. 2023): Chosein Yamahata, Sueo Sudo ASEAN and Regional Actors in the Indo-Pacific (1st ed. 2023)
Chosein Yamahata, Sueo Sudo
R3,989 Discovery Miles 39 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book discusses the shifting regional geopolitical engagements and development of rearranged connections emerging among ASEAN and non-ASEAN actors. First, the book focuses on the crucial discourse surrounding the Indo-Pacific region, including its challenges, continuity, and relevance. The discussion highlights the growing influence of regional actors such as India, Thailand, Japan, and the US, particularly in the context of a pressing question of collaboration versus containment amidst China’s rise. The book delves into various topics, such as geopolitical anxieties, economic strength, foreign policy, international relations, development, and security promotion in South and Southeast Asia, through the lenses of ASEAN centrality and the Indo-Pacific strategy. Second, the volume emphasizes on the escalating tensions and the worsening crises in the region that cause major anxieties and the subsequent realignment and new alignment of countries’ relationships. Among several chapters of the volume, a large Indo-China state, Myanmar, takes a special place in the book’s discussions as it has grown as an important ground for a resource/energy race among geopolitically strategic partners. Additionally, Myanmar has the potential to become a balancer in ASEAN. Therefore, any positive development and change in course of relations to Myanmar, particularly with its neighbors, Japan, and Russia, in both historical and contemporary contexts, can have a significant impact not only on Myanmar’s course towards peace, democracy, and security, but also regional stability. The editors and contributors examine the unique position of ASEAN, with a focus on ASEAN centrality as a platform for addressing anxieties and building relationships to bridge the gap between world and regional players, including both friends and foes. Overall, the volume provides valuable insights into the Indo-Pacific region’s complex dynamics, including cooperation and collaboration among regional actors for long-term stability and prosperity. The interdisciplinary composition of the book invites readers from various backgrounds to engage with constructive debates on general perception, contextual discussion, and the highlights of engaged research from local and international perspectives.

Institutionalizing East Asia - Mapping and Reconfiguring Regional Cooperation (Hardcover): Alice Ba, Cheng-Chwee Kuik, Sueo Sudo Institutionalizing East Asia - Mapping and Reconfiguring Regional Cooperation (Hardcover)
Alice Ba, Cheng-Chwee Kuik, Sueo Sudo
R4,275 Discovery Miles 42 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Institutional activities have remarkably transformed East Asia, a region once known for the absence of regionalism and regime-building efforts. Yet the dynamics of this Asian institutionalization have remained an understudied area of research. This book offers one of the first scholarly attempts to clarify what constitutes institutionalization in East Asia and to systematically trace the origins, discern the features, and analyze the prospects of ongoing institutionalization processes in the world's most dynamic region. Institutionalizing East Asia comprises eight essays, grouped thematically into three sections. Part I considers East and Southeast Asia as focal points of inter-state exchanges and traces the institutionalization of inter-state cooperation first among the Southeast Asian states and then among those of the wider East Asia. Part II examines the institutionalization of regional collaboration in four domains: economy, security, natural disaster relief, and ethnic conflict management. Part III discusses the institutionalization dynamics at the sub-regional and inter-regional levels. The essays in this book offer a useful source of reference for scholars and researchers specializing in East Asia, regional architecture, and institution-building in international relations. They will also be of interest to postgraduate and research students interested in ASEAN, the drivers and limits of international cooperation, as well as the role of regional multilateralism in the Asia-Pacific region.

Sueo Sudo
R4,410 Discovery Miles 44 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The International Relations of Japan and South East Asia asks three main questions: how and when has a new South East Asian regionalism been set in motion? what is the nature of Japanese leadership and networking in maintaining and promoting that new regionalism?; and, given the current economic and political crisis, what will happen to regionalism in the future?
This work is an invaluable resource for students and scholars as it gives a complete overview of Japanese foreign policy and Japan-South East Asian relations.

R3,268 Discovery Miles 32 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is centred on the role of the triangular interactions among communities, educational sectors, and academic diplomacy in facilitating peaceful societal change by evaluating the common challenges in India, Myanmar, and Thailand. It analyses urban poverty, religious freedom, ethnic diversity, women's rights, development and regional partnership, civil-military relations, and human security in democratic transition and explores in-depth the societal issues from local and international perspectives paying special attention to the protection of 'rights' and promotion of 'security' in these societies. The book highlights that the continuous application of knowledge across borders and the promotion of international norms are essential tools in enabling social transformations from the bottom. In addition, the contributors promote further discussion on both the process and the outcome from action research projects that shape the lives of the local people and their communities. The book therefore contributes to the existing literature by offering additional insights into the societies of India, Myanmar and Thailand for policy makers, social innovators, researchers, development analysts and planners and the general public including students.

Japan's ASEAN Policy - In Search of Proactive Multilateralism (Paperback): Sueo Sudo Japan's ASEAN Policy - In Search of Proactive Multilateralism (Paperback)

The central puzzle in the study of Japanese foreign policy has been why Japan has continued to play a passive role in international affairs, despite its impressive economic and political power. Challenging this central puzzle, the core argument of this study is to present an alternative path for the study of Japanese foreign policy. In fact, in recent years Japanese foreign policy has become less dependent on the United States, more strategic towards Asia, and more energetic towards international and regional institutions. One of the main features is multilateralism in Japanese foreign policy, as shown by Japan's active participation in the regional institutions. In pursuing multilateralism, Japan cooperated closely with the only durable regional body in Southeast Asia, to wit, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Given the fact that East Asian regionalism has been driven by ASEAN, it is of utmost urgency to investigate the emerging partnership between Japan and ASEAN. The central thesis of this study is thus to put Japan's ASEAN policy into a proper perspective by asserting that Japan's new policy initiatives towards ASEAN are not reactive, nor are they exceptions in a broader framework of merely reactive foreign policy.
