Colonialism, globalization and consumerism have devastated large
parts of our world. For the past five centuries, the West has
nurtured self-worth through the accumulation of worldly goods,
serving our own selfish interests and exploiting others. This has
been disastrous not only to human beings but to the whole ecology
of the planet. Consumerism drives trade, but consumer buying is now
like an unchained beast with tooth and claw causing han (unjust
suffering) for exploited peoples as well as for other species and
even for planet Earth. This book will examine ways of rethinking
and reimagining ourselves, helping us to work in more just
directions for a safer, sustainable planet. Empowering ourselves to
act more justly includes reimagining and renewing our inspiration
from God who is the transformative Spirit who gives, sustains and
empowers life to all.
This book develops creative imagining of traditional doctrines.
Chapters show the effectiveness of Latina/mujerista, evangelica,
womanist, Asian American, and white feminist imaginings in the
furthering of global gender justice.
When Psy's (Park Jae-sang) music video "Gangnam Style" went viral,
it achieved not only overnight global appeal, but also made the
Korean sensation an unexpected pop star breaking into the
mainstream American music market. The popularity of Gangnam Style
in the American scene has as much to say about our racialized
society as is does about the man who fashioned a rap music with an
infectious dance routine. Those who oppose this view maintain that
Gangnam Style has achieved an overnight global appeal in part
because of its catchy tune and a dance that is easy for audiences
to imitate. As we listen to his music video, do we Americans laugh
at him or with him? In this book, the authors respond to this
question from historical and theological perspectives, that tackle
the pressing issues concerning racial stereotypes, imposed
masculinity, and imitating another in order to ridicule him/her.

For Centuries, tension has existed between the East and West. There
appears to be a hierarchy of cultures with the West perceiving the
East as inferior, so much so that it is referred to simply as "the
Other." Because today's world is globally interdependent,
inter-woven, and integrative, it is pertinent to be open to the
cultural, spiritual, and religious understandings of the East. One
key concept that links East to the West is Spirit, a basic
religious dictum in many world religions. This book examines the
striking resemblance between the Eastern concept of Chi and the
Western Christian understanding of the Holy Spirit and opens the
door for greater communication and dialogue about the Other. As
Christianity seeks to renew its role and purpose in North America,
this new pneumatology will help strengthen and help build the Reign
of God as it embraces, welcomes, and accepts the Other.
What it means to be a self - and a self communicating and being in a particular culture - are key issues interwoven throughout Min-Sun Kim?s impressive text, Non-Western Perspectives on Human Communication. Going beyond cultural descriptions or instructions on adapting to specific cultures, the author interrogates the very core assumptions underlying the study of human communication and challenges longstanding individualistic, Western models on which much intercultural research is based. Kim proposes a non-western way of conceptualizing identity, or the "self" - the cornerstone of cultural research -- illuminating how traditional western and non-western views can be blended into a broader, more realistic understanding of cultures and communication. Grounding her work in a thorough knowledge of the literature, she challenges students and researchers alike to reexamine their approach to intercultural study. Features: - Interrogates
embedded assumptions about the traditional [Western] study of human communication with stunning, thought-provoking insight - Illuminates
issues surrounding culture and identity formation and challenges the reader to examine not only the study of human communication, but its engagement in everyday life - Informs
complex academic theory with stellar writing, poignant examples, and careful analysis - Invites
scholars and students to explore and integrate a long overdue multicultural perspective on human communication. About the Author: Min-Sun Kim (Ph.D., Michigan State University) is Professor in the Department of Speech at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Her research focus is the role of cognition in conversational styles among people of different cultural orientations. She is currently serving as an Associate Editor for Communication Reports and also as a reviewer for various communication journals.

This collection demonstrates a constructive potential in
reimagining with doctrines, which unlocks them from centuries of
patriarchal constraint. It opens the way for glimpsing divine
action in the economy of salvation, while human struggles for
justice are placed within a wider arena when discrete theological
resources are deployed in this way.

In the last fifty years, Korea has transformed itself from an
agrarian, Confucian-based culture into a global and technological
powerhouse, and one of the most important political and economic
forces in the world. Based on previous research and face-to-face
interviews, the book shows how contemporary Koreans negotiate
traditional Confucian values and Western capitalistic values in
their everyday encounters - particularly in business and
professional contexts. This is a useful companion book for courses
in international business, intercultural communication, and Asian
studies.

16th Annual Outreach Magazine Resource of the Year - Culture We
live in conflicted times. Our newsfeeds are filled with inequality,
division, and fear. We want to make a difference and see justice
restored because Jesus calls us to be a peacemaking and reconciling
people. But how do we do this? Based on their work with diverse
churches, colleges, and other organizations, Grace Ji-Sun Kim and
Graham Hill offer Christian practices that can bring healing and
hope to a broken world. They provide ten ways to transform society,
from lament and repentance to relinquishing power, reinforcing
agency, and more. Embodying these practices enables us to be the
new humanity in Jesus Christ, so the church and world can
experience reconciliation, justice, unity, peace, and love. With
small group activities, discussion questions, and exercises in each
chapter, this book is ideal to read together in community. Discover
here how to bring real change to a dehumanized world.
This book presents selected, peer-reviewed proceedings of the
International Conference on Advanced Mechanical Engineering,
Automation and Sustainable Development 2021 (AMAS2021), held in the
city of Ha Long, Vietnam, from November 4 to 7, 2021. AMAS2021 is a
special meeting of the International Conference on Material,
Machines and Methods for Sustainable Development (MMMS), with a
strong focus on automation and fostering an overall approach to
assist policy makers, industries, and researchers at various levels
to position local technological development toward sustainable
development. The contributions published in this book stem from a
wide spectrum of research, ranging from micro- and nanomaterial
design and processing, to special applications in mechanical
technology, environmental protection, green development, and
climate change mitigation. A large group of contributions selected
for these proceedings also focus on modeling and manufacturing of
ecomaterials.
Intersectional Theology: An Introductory Guide offers a pathway for
reflective Christians, pastors, and theologians to apply the
concepts and questions of intersectionality to theology.
Intersectionality is a tool for analysis, developed primarily by
black feminists, to examine the causes and consequences of
converging social identities (gender, race, class, sexual identity,
age, ability, nation, religion) within interlocking systems of
power and privilege (sexism, racism, classism, heterosexism,
ableism, ageism, nativism) and to foster engaged, activist work
toward social justice. Applied to theology, intersectionality
demands attention to the Christian thinker's own identities and
location within systems of power and the value of deep
consideration of complementary, competing, and even conflicting
points of view that arise from the experiences and understandings
of diverse people. This book provides an overview of theories of
intersectionality and suggests questions of intersectionality for
theology, challenging readers to imagine an intersectional church,
a practice of welcome and inclusion rooted in an ecclesiology that
embraces difference and centers social justice. Rather than
providing a developed systematic theology, Intersectional Theology
encourages readers to apply its method in their own theologizing to
expand their own thinking and add their experiences to a larger
theology that moves us all toward the kin-dom of God.
Medical Schools: Past, Present and Future Perspectives opens with a
focus on the study of anatomy, the foundation of any medical
education. Advances in technology involving radiological imaging,
touch-based computer programs, and virtual anatomy laboratories
have been adopted to provide students with large amounts of less
costly, more widely accessible and more rapidly retrievable
anatomical data. Following this, the authors discuss medical
education in India from its beginnings in informal schools to
today, where institutes of medical sciences are being set up in
different parts of the country without the necessary preparatory
work. A comprehensive framework for institutions aiming to improve
academic support for struggling students is provided. Medical
school is known to be academically demanding and resource
intensive, and some students are at higher risk for struggling
based on their background, as well as educational or demographic
factors. The closing study explores cinemeducation, an approach
that uses film and TV as complementary tools to illustrate concepts
and stimulate discussion about humanistic perspectives of medicine.
Many health sciences students watch TV medical dramas and films
about medical issues, and they remember the portrayal of medical
professionals and their relationships with patients and one
another, as well as the ethical dilemmas these characters face in
their work.
