Under Wulfstan's guidance, a number of Worcester brethren undertook historical research that resulted in the writing of such renowned texts as Hemming's Cartulary and the Worcester Chronica Chronicarum. Significantly, these historical endeavours spanned the political chasm of the Norman Conquest. The essays collected here aim to shed new light on different aspects of the Worcester "historical workshop", whose literary ouput was, in several respects, pioneering in contemporary European scholarship. Several chapters address the different ways in which the monks organised and updated their archives of documents, both via their sequence of cartularies, with a special focus on the narrative parts of Hemming's Cartulary, and via an interesting (and previously unedited) prose account of the foundation of the see. Others focus on the famous Worcester Chronica Chronicarum, attributed both to Florence and to John, investigating the major model for its composition and structure (the work of Marianus Scotus), the stages in which it was completed, and its connections with Welsh chronicles, as well as the related and fascinating abbreviated version, written mostly in the hand of John himself, and known as the Chronicula. Mary Sullivan was born illegitimate, and partially blind. She was adopted from a Catholic orphanage by a fanatical, middle aged couple, with no children of their own. Because of MRS. Sullivan's health problems, and her inexperience with small children, Mary was volleyed back and forth between the infant home, and her adopted home. Mary had bonded with one of the nuns, and preferred the infant home to the Sullivan home. This caused a lot of anger, and resentment, resulting in years of physical, verbal, and psychological abuse. Mary was set along a path of institutions, and more abuse. When she was twelve Mary was diagnosed as semi autistic. Because of this, and her compulsion to run away, she wound up in a very controversial treatment center up North. Then at age seventeen Mary received her big break when she was enrolled in The Perkins School for the blind, in Massachusetts. She fell in love with the school, but her emotional scars from her past got in the way frequently. After two years Mary reluctantly graduated, and stumbled head long in to the adult world, not knowing what she was doing. This book is for people who have been beaten down by the system, but not beaten.

Women are under-represented in African publishing at top management levels, and African publishing infrastructure is weak. Ten African women who head their own publishing houses or organisations relate their personal experiences of how and why they got into publishing, their successes and failures. They represent state, commercial, non- profit and community publishing, a women writers' group, and a bookseller. The eleventh contribution is an overview of women publishing in South Africa. Few of the contributors, if any, had encountered direct discrimination on the grounds of their gender; the barriers for women are lack of education, and cultural factors. As a whole the contributions give an overview of the sobering realities of African publishers, and in particular for women. They celebrate what these women have achieved, and show the courage needed to start and run cultural institutions in Africa. These women are an inspiration for others to play their part in the cultural development of the continent.
