"Antisemitism: An Annotated Bibliography" includes periodical works
published throughout the world about antisemitism from the ancient
period up to the present. It lists books, dissertations, master's
theses, and articles from periodicals and collections from a
diverse range of disciplines - history, literature, art,
psychology, sociology, anthropology. Antisemitism is defined as
antagonism toward Jews and Judaism as expressed in writings (e.g.
the New Testament, polemical literature, works of fiction), in the
visual arts (e.g. art, caricatures, films), and in actions (e.g.
discriminatory legislation, pogroms, massacres, the Holocaust). The
bibliography includes all works dealing with th...e Holocaust
period (1933-1945) - i.e. on antisemitic ideology, policy, and
attitudes, as well as on the Jewish experience (memoirs, memorial
books, etc.). The listings are compiled mainly from the holdings of
the Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem which
receives most of the works published throughout the world dealing
with Judaica. The bibliography has been systematically arranged.
All titles are annotated. Indexes of authors and subjects represent
a further means of access. The Association of Jewish Libraries
(USA) selected this work for the Best Bibliography Award of 1994.
Many reviewers have singled it out for commendation. The
bibliographic staff is comprised of academics from diverse
disciplines, with expertise in Jewish history. Each staff member
has a working knowledge of at least four languages, and together
they cover material in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish,
Catalan, Portuguese, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Hungarian, Dutch,
Hebrew and Yiddish. Experts in otherlanguages (e.g. Czech, Swedish,
Danish, Japanese) are called upon when needed. The objectives of
the Bibliographic Project can be outlined as follows: -
Authoritative: The bibliography as a whole will reflect current
literature and research on antisemitism. At the same time it will
specifically avoid emphasizing or endorsing any particular point of
view. To ensure this, reputable scholars comprise the staff of the
Bibliographic Project. - Comprehensive: The bibliography
substantially covers the literature about antisemitism and provides
separate sections for all major sub-areas. - Annotated: An
informative abstract in English is provided for each entry. In all
cases, the annotation gives details of the period, the country, the
persons, and the actions central to the work described. -
Multilingual: Publications on the phenomenon of antisemitism have
appeared in many languages. The bibliography enables scholars and
others to have access to all published material. An English
translation is given for titles in languages other than German,
French, Italian, or Spanish. - Accurate: A sufficient level of
expertise accompanies both the process of selecting entries and
writing abstracts to ensure a high standard of accuracy. Many
scholars are engaged in research on antisemitism and in
explanations of the phenomenon. In recent years the number of
publications dealing with antisemitism has increased. The
investigation and documentation of antisemitism will continue to be
important in the future. This cumulative, annotated bibliography is
a significant aid to further research and documentation.
