Literature and the Renewal of the Public Sphere (Hardcover): M. Walhout, Susan Vanzanten Gallagher Literature and the Renewal of the Public Sphere (Hardcover)
M. Walhout, Susan Vanzanten Gallagher
R1,506 Discovery Miles 15 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection examines the ways in which religion and literature are capable of renewing what the eminent German philosopher Jurgen Habermas refers to as 'the public sphere'. The essays range from close commentaries on particular texts ( King Lear, The Brothers Karamazov, 'Bartleby the Scrivener') to surveys of the careers of selected writers who have entered the public sphere (Elizabeth Gaskell, W.H. Auden, Raymond Carver, Sherman Alexie), to historical and theoretical examinations of various national and international public spheres.

With the diminished influence of intellectuals outside the academy and a marked decline in the quality of public discourse, many observers have called for the return of the "public intellectual." At the same time, religion is playing an increasingly public role in the modern world. This collection of essays examines the possibility that both religion and literature, in their complex interactions, are capable of reentering and renewing what the eminent German philosopher Jürgen Habermas refers to as "the public sphere."

Postcolonial Literature and the Biblical Call for Justice (Paperback): Susan Vanzanten Gallagher Postcolonial Literature and the Biblical Call for Justice (Paperback)
Susan Vanzanten Gallagher
R826 Discovery Miles 8 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Colonizers imposed Christianity and biblical codes upon their conquered subjects. In the waning of imperialism the newly emerging peoples employed these same biblical codes as their cries for freedom and justice as they drove out their former masters. This collection of twelve essays exposes this tool of oppression as a tool of justice in works from Latin American, Native American, African, and Middle Eastern authors. Drawing on a variety of theological perspectives, including liberation theology, feminist theology, and the Reformed tradition, the contributors examine works by a number of international authors. Represented are works by Ernesto Cardenal (Nicaragua), Gabrial Garcia Marquez (Columbia), Isabel Allende (Chile), Julio Cartazar (Argentina), Nicholas Black Elk and Charles Eastman (United States), Chinua Achebe (Nigeria), Ngugi wa Thiong'o (Kenya), Andre Brink (South Africa), and Edward Said (Palestine), and others. These writers from postcolonial lands express readings of individual biblical texts as well as theoretical discussion of such issues as the challenge biblical justice makes to poststructualism, the tensions in synthesizing Christianity and indigenous cultures, and the ethical dilemmas faced by writers opposing unjustice. This collection serves as a celebration of the diversity of postcolonial literature.
