Re-imagining Child Protection - Towards Humane Social Work with Families (Paperback, New): Brid Featherstone, Susan White, Kate... Re-imagining Child Protection - Towards Humane Social Work with Families (Paperback, New)
Brid Featherstone, Susan White, Kate Morris
R776 Discovery Miles 7 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Why has the language of the child and of child protection become so hegemonic? What is lost and gained by such language? Who is being protected, and from what, in a risk society? Given that the focus is overwhelmingly on those families who are multiply deprived, do services reinforce or ameliorate such deprivations? And is it ethical to remove children from their parents in a society riven by inequalities? This timely book challenges a child protection culture that has become mired in muscular authoritarianism towards multiply deprived families. It calls for family-minded humane practice where children are understood as relational beings, parents are recognized as people with needs and hopes and families as carrying extraordinary capacities for care and protection. The authors, who have over three decades of experience as social workers, managers, educators and researchers in England, also identify the key ingredients of just organizational cultures where learning is celebrated. This important book will be required reading for students on qualifying and post-qualifying courses in child protection, social workers, managers, academics and policy makers.

Protecting Children - A Social Model (Paperback): Brid Featherstone, Anna Gupta, Kate Morris, Susan White Protecting Children - A Social Model (Paperback)
Brid Featherstone, Anna Gupta, Kate Morris, Susan White
R700 Discovery Miles 7 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The state is increasingly experienced as both intrusive and neglectful, particularly by those living in poverty, leading to loss of trust and widespread feelings of alienation and disconnection. Against this tense background, this innovative book argues that child protection policies and practices have become part of the problem, rather than ensuring children's well-being and safety. Building on the ideas in the best-selling Re-imagining child protection and drawing together a wide range of social theorists and disciplines, the book: * Challenges existing notions of child protection, revealing their limits; * Ensures that the harms children and families experience are explored in a way that acknowledges the social and economic contexts in which they live; * Explains how the protective capacities within families and communities can be mobilised and practices of co-production adopted; * Places ethics and human rights at the centre of everyday conversations and practices.

Blinded by Science - The Social Implications of Epigenetics and Neuroscience (Paperback): David Wastell, Susan White Blinded by Science - The Social Implications of Epigenetics and Neuroscience (Paperback)
David Wastell, Susan White
R866 Discovery Miles 8 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent years, new areas of biology, especially epigenetics and neuroscience, have enthralled the public imagination. They have been used as powerful arguments for developing social policy in a particular direction, from early intervention in the lives of disadvantaged children to seeking 'biomarkers' as identifiers of criminality. This timely book, written by leading commentators, critically examines the capabilities and limitations of these biotechnologies, exploring their implications for policy and practice. The book will enable social scientists, policy makers, practitioners and interested general readers to understand how the new biologies of epigenetics and neuroscience have increasingly influenced the fields of family policy, mental health, child development and criminal justice. The book will facilitate much needed debate about what makes a good society and how best to build one. It also draws attention to the ways that the uncertainties of the original science are lost in their translation into the everyday world of practice and policy.

Alice Gailsone was Dyspell, the most dangerous and feared woman in the world. She was infamous for being the second in command of the Purge, the most vile terrorist organization on the planet. At least she was, until she abruptly retired for reasons unknown... Alice Gailsone is now a buyer and trader of rare gemstones with the help of her adopted niece, Allison. She lives a boring, low-key life and does her best to stay out of trouble. At least she did, until she was approached by Alan Tanner, powerful business tycoon by day and dangerous vigilante Blackthorne by night, with an offer she cannot refuse: Put together a team of former super villain- turned-heroes in exchange for access to the one thing on the planet that could save her mother's life. Her first assignment is the Lotus, a deadly assassin for Japan's premiere criminal empire, the Dead Talon. In her way is a powerful corporate giant, an army of trained soldiers, a cult of murderous Kitsune and an unknown force moving in the shadows. To survive, she'll need to pull everything out of her bag of tricks: guns, magic, cunning and more. Even with a terrifying and destructive power resting just beneath her fingertips, it may not be enough. She is out of practice, out of her element, and running out of time... Big In Japan is the first in a series of Action/Adventure Urban Fantasy novels about the Gailsone family. Join Alice as she deals with mob bosses, mercenaries, magic-related problems, golems, Kitsune, grumpy fortune tellers and the occasional firefight. Follow along as secret plots and sinister forces worm their way out of the shadows to test not only Alice, but the other 'heroes' of the Gailsone universe. A larger plan is unfolding with terrifying implications for the world, and Alice, whether she likes it or not, is stuck smack dab in the middle.

Christian Worship and Technological Change (Paperback): Susan White Christian Worship and Technological Change (Paperback)
Susan White
R624 R512 Discovery Miles 5 120 Save R112 (18%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Those interested in Christian worship have tended to limit their attention to three areas: (1) the history of rites and texts; (2) the theological meaning of specific liturgical acts; and (3) the nature of ritual speech and gesture. But there has been little attention paid to the interaction between Christian worship and its immediate social context. This book will argue that one of the primary influences on the social context of Christian worship is the pervasive presence of technology and technological process, and that these have had a profound effect on liturgical theory and practice.

After a survey of some of the important work being done in the history and philosophy of technology, White goes on to cite specific historical examples of the creative interplay between technological processes and Christian worship. This will include such things as the pasteurization of grape juice for the use at communion and the changes in funeral rites which were made necessary by the practice of embalming. The argument will then turn to the way in which individuals who "think technologically" approach the act of Christian worship today, and then to a discussion of the technological influences at work on those involved in preparing services of public worship. This last section will describe how technology has affected the way in which every mainline denomination produces its official service materials, as well as how individual congregations appropriate liturgical change.

In the final section of the book, one issue remains to be addressed: Is technology a dangerous social force, against which Christian worship can be a potent weapon? Or, on the other hand, is technology an inextricable element in a contemporary society to which Christian worship must accommodate itself in order to be "relevant"?
