No sound class requires so much basic knowledge of phonology, acoustics, aerodynamics, and speech production as obstruents (turbulent sounds) do. This book is intended to bridge a gap by introducing the reader to the world of obstruents from a multidisciplinary perspective. It starts with a review of typological processes, continues with various contributions to the phonetics-phonology interface, explains the realization of specific turbulent sounds in endangered languages, and finishes with surveys of obstruents from a sociophonetic, physical and pathological perspective.

Inter-individual variation in speech is a topic of increasing interest both in human sciences and speech technology. It can yield important insights into biological, cognitive, communicative, and social aspects of language. Written by specialists in psycholinguistics, phonetics, speech development, speech perception and speech technology, this volume presents experimental and modeling studies that provide the reader with a deep understanding of interspeaker variability and its role in speech processing, speech development, and interspeaker interactions. It discusses how theoretical models take into account individual behavior, explains why interspeaker variability enriches speech communication, and summarizes the limitations of the use of speaker information in forensics.

Learning and memory processes are basic features of human existence. They allow us to (un)consciously adapt to changes in our social and physical environment in a variety of ways and may have been a precursor for survival in human evolution. How is the voicing contrast in German realised with respect to its laryngeal and supralaryngeal articulation and their coordination? This book offers a comprehensive overview of the underlying articulatory mechanisms and their corresponding acoustics with a particular focus on differences in various word and stress positions. It provides the first data on glottal opening occurring in word final position, where the phonological rule of final devoicing should apply. The results are discussed in light of the phonetics-phonology-interface, the use of phonological terminology, the role of timing, inter-articulatory coordination and stress.

Application Service Providing (ASP) is a recently emerged software delivery model under which an Application Service Provider hosts, manages and delivers software as a service to customers via the Internet or a private network. Customers who are unsure about the value of ASP and their demands may be reluctant to commit to ASP contracts. The underlying research identifies determinants influencing adoption intentions in the early technology stages of ASP within electric utilities. The theoretical framework is based on the findings of studies from van Everdingen and Frambach and is adapted from Rogers work on the diffusion of innovations. The tested model includes characteristics of the innovation, such as relative (dis-) advantage of ASP, as well as characteristics of the environment, the adopting company and importance of social influence. After a broad qualitative study a quantitative web-based survey was employed. All constructs rank high in measurement quality and the overall model reveals food for an improved conception of ASP as well as managerial practices.
