The purpose of the volume is to discuss the universal properties of topics and, at the same time, to document the range of discourse-semantic and grammatical variation within this phenomenon in European languages. The volume is structured accordingly: (i) theoretical foundations of topicality in grammar and discourse; (ii) discourse-semantic correlates of topicality; (iii) variation in the grammatical (external and internal) encoding of topicality; (iv) topics from the diachronic perspective. The articles take different perspectives, including contrastive studies of modern languages, studies on diachronic development, and typological generalizations. They also take into consideration various types of empirical data - introspective data, semi-spontaneously produced data, experimental data and language corpora. The articles in this volume show that the concept of topic is necessary for the description and explanation of a number of discourse-semantic phenomena. This edited volume investigates the concept of ambiguity and how it manifests itself in language and communication from a new perspective. The main goal is to uncover a great mystery: why can we communicate effectively despite the fact that ambiguity is pervasive in the language that we use? And conversely, how do speakers and hearers use ambiguity and vagueness to achieve a specific goal? Comprehensive answers to these questions are provided from different fields which focus on the study of language, in particular, linguistics, literary criticism, rhetoric, psycholinguistics, theology, media studies and law. By bringing together these different disciplines, the book documents a radical change in the research on ambiguity. The innovation is brought about by the transdisciplinary perspective of the individual and co-authored papers that bridge the gaps between disciplines. The Ambiguity Model is a hybrid model which brings together the different perspectives on how language and the language system work with respect to ambiguity as well as the question of how ambiguity is employed in communication and in different communicational settings. A set of specific features that are relevant for the description of ambiguity, such as whether the ambiguity arises in the production or perception process, and whether it occurs in strategic or nonstrategic communication, are defined. The research program rests on the assumption that both the production and the perception of ambiguity, as well as its strategic and nonstrategic occurrence, can only be understood by exploring how these factors interact with each other and a reference system when ambiguity is generated and resolved. The collection Ambiguity: Language and Communication constitutes a superb introduction to the workings of ambiguity in language and communication along with extensive analyses of many different examples from different fields. This collection investigates the architecture of focus in linguistic theory from different theoretical perspectives. Research on focus and information structure in the last four decades has shown that the phenomenon of focus is highly complex, the theoretical approaches manifold, and the data highly sensitive. The main emphasis has been placed on the integration of the notion of focus in generative grammar. In recent years, however, the approaches to focus and information structure underwent a radical change in perspective. The theoretical concept of focus, its related terms and phenomena became the object of research. Along with it, the research questions shifted: instead of locating focus in the architecture of grammar, linguists investigate the architecture of focus itself. The central underlying idea of this collection is to document this change in perspective with the aim of isolating essential keystones and research areas in both the theoretical and empirical domain. The book is structured accordingly. Following the introduction, there are four main sections: The general section discusses the theoretical foundations of focus within grammar. The second section hosts papers which investigate the representation of focus and topic at the syntax-pragmatics interface. The third section discusses the phonological representation of focus and its relation to meaning. The papers of the final section investigate different types of focus constructions in a variety languages. The collection of papers on the architecture of focus, its interpretation and representation mirror the establishment of the focus research field.

Covering linguistic research on empty categories over more than three decades, this monograph presents the result of an in-depth syntactic and focus-theoretical investigation of ellipsis in generative grammar. The phenomenon of ellipsis most generally refers to the omission of linguistic material, structure and sound. The central aim of this book is to explain on the basis of linguistic theorizing of how it is possible that we understand more than we actually hear. The answer developed throughout this book is that ellipsis is an interface phenomenon which can only be explained on the basis of the complex interaction between syntax, semantics and information structure. Sein Nutzen fur Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft findet politische Anerkennung. Besonders in den Bereichen Gesundheit und Pravention konnten enorme Zuwachse in samtlichen Disziplinen registriert werden. Sport ist ein unverzichtbares Element, ein aktiver Bestandteil des Gemeinwesens und steht im Zuge weitreichender Mediatisierung vermehrt im offentlichen Interesse. Doch trotz seines Stellenwerts muss sich der Sport Prioritat gegenuber anderen Bereichen erkampfen und sich seine Unterstutzung suchen. Er benotigt neben dem offentlichen Interesse v.a. die Leistung und Hilfe der offentlichen Hand und ist auf erganzende finanzielle Mittel angewiesen. Der Sportsektor ist von weit reichenden Veranderungen betroffen. Diese Auswirkungen sind v.a. bezogen auf die finanzielle Unterstutzung des Sports und den bestehenden Fordersysteme spurbar. Hier lassen sich starke Schwankungen beobachten. Sportliche Hochstleistungen sind keine Zufallsprodukte, sondern das Ergebnis systematischer Forderpolitik. Besonders im internationalen Vergleich zeigen sich starke Unterschiede. Die hier vorliegende Arbeit analysiert ruckblickend die Sportfordermittel in Deutschland und gibt einen Uberblick uber Sportforderstrukturen in der BRD. Diese werden in Bezug zu ausgesuchten Einflussfaktoren und zu Fordersystemen und -strukturen ausgewahlter Nationen gestellt. Aus den gewonnenen Ergebnissen werden Handlungsempfehlungen und Losungsansatze fur eine zukunftige Sportforderung abgeleitet.
