Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 3, University of Wurzburg (Neuphilologisches Institut), course: Englische Literaturwissenschaft, 22 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This paper will deal with how American culture changed and grew near the end of the 19th century. The Industrial Revolution, the American Civil War - which ended up with the abolition of Slavery - Reconstruction Era and much more historical and political occurrences, stamped the United States as a nation - the nation as we know it nowadays. In this paper, however, only the most serious development - the Industrial Revolution and its heir - will be handled, as otherwise dwelling on details of all 19th century occurrences would go beyond the boundaries. To introduce the topic and issue, background information on the 19th century U.S. will be provided. The Industrial Revolution represents a term that can't easily be assigned to a specific point of time, but rather a period of time that started approximately around the 1850s and ended presumably at the beginning of the new century. It's hard to define a date as the Industrial Revolution, also called "The Machine Age," had been a kind of process that had its beginnings in Great Britain and only came to America later on. What can be told for sure is that this Revolution with all its technical innovations and improvements in all fields of life represents the "break-through" of America as a superpower. These and more aspects will be explained at the beginning of the main part. ...]

The United Nations World Assembly on Aging has made advancing health and well-being into old age a worldwide call for action. And this text at hand shows us what researchers worldwide are doing to answer that call. Here, three of America's most esteemed experts on aging lead a global team of contributors - each an expert in his or her country - to show us what the top challenges of each nation are, and what top research is being done there to meet those. While we cannot predict with absolute certainty all of the issues that will arise over the next 20 years, we can anticipate some and we must start now to prepare for these challenges, an expert from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services warned at a recent UN World Assembly on Aging. Needed response to the global population shift is not just the responsibility of governments, but will be a product of wise, long-term decisions made by individuals and societies, she explained. In most nations globally, populations are graying and the number of people aged 65 and older is vastly increasing, creating a larger segment of senior citizens than the world has ever before seen. Across human history, the elderly accounted for no more than 3 percent of the world population. By the year 2030, the elderly are expected to make up about 25 percent of the world population. And while longevity is of course seen as a great success, longer lifespan for such masses also creates dilemmas. For example, the incidence of dementia has already increased significantly with an 11-fold increase in people aged 65 and older in the US since the turn of the century, and a similar increase in aged people in Scotland has researchers there scrambling to find treatments for what they expect will be a 75 percent increase in dementia over the next 25 years. Chronic diseases that come with aging are already taxing health care systems in the US and around the world to Japan, with most experts aware their current health systems would be overrun and lack enough staff and facilities to handle the needs of an elderly population multiplying largely in the coming two decades. Increases in psychological issues such as dealing with the depression often striking aged people are impending, too, as are social issues such as how families, and public policies, will deal with the changing shape of the family.

Aging - The Social Context (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Leslie A. Morgan, Suzanne Kunkel Aging - The Social Context (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)

R5,360 Discovery Miles 53 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

NEW edition! More than any other social gerontology texts available, addresses issues of diversity in aging by race, ethnicity, social class, and gender throughout.

  • Offers a coherent narrative, organized around broad sociological themes. What integrates this text overall is the discussion of how we socially construct aging, how different societies at different times construct aging, and what those changes say about our society.
  • Shows students that they are part of the larger social process of aging, shaped by the context in which they live - by the people, groups, agencies, and governments surrounding them. Students thus become part of the picture, rather than outsiders looking in.
  • Woven throughout chapters are profiles on specific theories that have been developed for or applied to the study of aging. The applications are set off and optional for instructors, but are written so that students see the connection to their everyday lives as well as the practical and powerful value theory has to illuminate important social issues.
  • Contains lively, speculative essays on topics not traditionally covered in gerontology texts (see Table of Contents), causing students to use their imaginations in applying aging to new and unusual problems. What is new to this Second Edition?
  • Updated information on topics such as Social Security and global aging has been added.
  • The biology and psychology chapters have been edited to flow more coherently with the rest of the text. Significant new material on memory / memory loss has been added to the psychology of aging chapter, and the chapter on biology of aging has been updated.
  • Some areas of the text have been reorganized to avoid duplication and overlaps. In addition, there is a new section on death and dying
  • Close to one half of the topical essays are new. New use of photos and cartoons are contained throughout the text, as well as added and new web sites for students, and updated graphics.
  • Questions for thought and discussion have been added at the end of each chapter.
