100 years after Karel Capek coined the word, "robots" are an
everyday idea, and the inspiration for countless stories in books,
film, TV and games. They are often among the least privileged, most
unfairly used of us, and the more robots are like humans, the more
interesting they become. This collection of stories is where robots
stand in for us, where both we and they are disadvantaged, and
where hope and optimism shines through. Including stories by:
Brooke Bolander * John Chu * Daryl Gregory * Peter F. Hamilton *
Saad Z. Hossain * Rich Larson * Ken Liu * Ian R. Macleod * Annalee
Newitz * Tochi Onyebuchi * Suzanne Palmer * Sarah Pinsker * Vina
Jie-Min Prasad * Alastair Reynolds * Sofia Samatar * Peter Watts
This report publishes the results of excavations at a "most
unusual" site, which revealed a large number of features and finds.
Structures and finds ranged from Mesolithic to medieval, but dating
was tricky because occupants of the site all used the same
materials - limestone and lime plaster in much the same manner. The
main characteristics of the Roman/Romano-British remains are those
of trade, ritual and wealth and it is suggested that during the
main occupation period the excavated area was possibly the ritual
or ceremonial area associated with a settlement primarily involved
in trade with England and the Continent.
An excavation report on this Mesolithic site discovered in 1967.
Susann Palmer and a number of other contributors describe the
archaeological evidence and stratigraphy, the geophysical survey
and artefacts recovered. Environmental and dating evidence are
evaluated and the site is set in a wider context by comparison with
contemporary sites nearby. Interpretations are made of population
values, the economic and domestic activities at the site, and
evidence for the spiritual or religious life of its inhabitants.
