This volume represents a continuation of the Polymer Science and
Technology series edited by Dr. D. M. Brewis and Professor D.
Briggs. The theme of the series is the production of a number of
stand alone volumes on various areas of polymer science and
technology. Each volume contains short articles by a variety of
expert contributors outlining a particular topic and these articles
are extensively cross referenced. References to related topics
included in the volume are indicated by bold text in the articles,
the bold text being the title of the relevant article. At the end
of each article there is a list of bibliographic references where
interested readers can obtain further detailed information on the
subject of the article. This volume was produced at the invitation
of Derek Brewis who asked me to edit a text which concentrated on
the mechanical properties of polymers. There are already many
excellent books on the mechanical properties of polymers, and a
somewhat lesser number of volumes dealing with methods of carrying
out mechanical tests on polymers. Some of these books are listed in
Appendix 1. In this volume I have attempted to cover basic
mechanical properties and test methods as well as the theory of
polymer mechanical deformation and hope that the reader will find
the approach useful.

Factual Television (1966) looks at the techniques and purpose of
all facets of factual television – news and current affairs
programmes; documentaries; reporting stories; the ethics of
reporters and producers. It quotes at length from television
writers, producers and television executives, to give very much an
insider’s view of the arena.
What does it mean to personalise cancer medicine? Drawing on an
ethnographic study with cancer patients, carers and practitioners
in the UK, this book traces their efforts to access and interpret
novel genomic tests, information and treatments as they craft
personal and collective futures. Exploring multiple experiences of
new diagnostic tests, research programmes and trials, advocacy and
experimental therapies, the authors chart the different kinds of
care and work involved in efforts to personalise cancer medicine,
as well as the ways in which benefits and opportunities are
unevenly realised and distributed. Comparing these experiences with
policy and professional accounts of the 'big' future of
personalised healthcare, the authors show how hope and care are
multi-faceted, contingent and, at times, frustrated in the everyday
complexities of living and working with cancer. This book is
available as an open access ebook under a CC-BY-NC-ND licence. -- .

Of all the pioneers of the cinema, the Soviet film director Sergei
Eisenstein has exerted the most enduring hold on the popular
imagination. This book offers a unique portrait of the director
based on the personal recollections of those who knew him.
Originally published in 1976, it is illustrated with over forty
photographs, stills and drawings, among them Eisenstein's
delightful childhood sketches and some of his designs for the
theatre and the cinema. The recollections were mostly originally
recorded by Norman Swallow for a film made for the BBC over a
period of two years in Moscow, Leningrad, Riga and Odessa, as well
as in Western Europe and the USA. The result is a vivid composite
portrait of one of the greatest, as well as one of the most
controversial, figures in the history of the cinema.
Publishers Weekly starred review A Best Book of 2018 in Religion,
Publishers Weekly Reading great literature well has the power to
cultivate virtue, says acclaimed author Karen Swallow Prior. In
this book, she takes readers on a guided tour through works of
great literature both ancient and modern, exploring twelve virtues
that philosophers and theologians throughout history have
identified as most essential for good character and the good life.
Covering authors from Henry Fielding to Cormac McCarthy, Jane
Austen to George Saunders, and Flannery O'Connor to F. Scott
Fitzgerald, Prior explores some of the most compelling universal
themes found in the pages of classic books, helping readers learn
to love life, literature, and God through their encounters with
great writing. The book includes end-of-chapter reflection
questions geared toward book club discussions, original artwork
throughout, and a foreword by Leland Ryken. The hardcover edition
was named a Best Book of 2018 in Religion by Publishers Weekly.

AT 40,000 FEET UP... THERE IS NO PLACE TO HIDE. A fatal crash on a
rain-slick road and a brutal murder in an English village set off a
deadly chain of events, leading from stormy skies over the
Mediterranean Sea to an explosive confrontation on a remote
airstrip in North Africa... Only a handful of people know the
reason why Kate Hood left the military in disgrace; now a contract
pilot for a private jet company, she's looking for a second chance
and a better life. But to keep her secrets, she must take a
last-minute assignment to fly a covert cargo out of the country to
a non-extradition nation, with no questions asked. The cargo is a
prisoner who may be the key to a violent terrorist conspiracy –
but he swears he is an innocent man, wrongly accused of crimes he
played no part in. And as Kate races through the night, on the
ground a team of ruthless killers are hunting the people she cares
about, threatening their lives to force the pilot to hijack her own
aircraft. But do they plan to liberate the captive – or execute
him? Trapped at the heart of an escalating crisis, Kate and her
mysterious passenger must navigate the conflicting agendas of
enemies and allies alike, on a flight into danger that neither of
them may survive...
Good live sound engineering and concert sound engineering requires
more than plugging in some amplifiers and turning a few volume
knobs. It demands knowledge of acoustics and electronics combined
with working with a band or producer to give them the sound they
want. Every venue is different -- from the cozy bar to a
medium-sized concert hall to an outdoor arena -- and each brings
its own challenges to audio engineering. But it's the live sound
engineer's job to work with and control the acoustics and make sure
the band sounds great. This book is going to be the missing link
between the technical side of audio engineering and normal everyday
language and understanding. It'll discuss the most important aspect
of Mixing a live show, and how to be creative with the tools you
are given. The idea is to go and use the book in a practical
environment. In depth descriptions of what each knob does, and how
they affect the end result. Musicians and aspiring live-sound
professionals can lean from an expert who has mixed for acts
including La Roux - The Hoosiers I Amy Winehouse I Corinne Bailey
Rae- and worked sets from the main stage at Glastonbury to the
local cozy bar, gleaning invaluable insight into what the pros do,
how they do it, what they do it with. Readers will learn the
technical, practical, and political aspects of the job - from
customizing mixing approaches and choosing the right equipment to
working with artists and other engineers. The book also includes
insightful, sometimes bizarre, but entertaining anecdotes about the
climb to the big time. Author Dave Swallow combines a lively
writing style with essential details, including complete gear lists
for featured tours, and informative sidebars that offer specific
advice on how to get started and get the gig.
