The occurrence of deleterious or even fatal drug-drug interactions
(DDIs) in the perioperative period is no longer a theoretical
concern but a harrowing reality. A Case Approach to Perioperative
Drug-Drug Interactions addresses the complex realm of
pharmacokinetic drug interactions in an easy-to-read volume that
functions as both a comprehensive clinical reference and a
casebook. The book presents a summary of the core concepts of drug
interactions; an organized, annotated presentation of the drug
interactions most relevant to the perioperative clinician; and
approximately 200 case scenarios that highlight specific drug
interactions. This book fills a real void in the clinical
literature and is invaluable to anesthesiologists and surgeons, and
PharmDs, as well as trainees in those specialties; intensive care
staff, including physicians, physician assistants, and nurses; and
nurse practitioners who staff preoperative evaluation clinics.
This is a study of the procurement and processing of raw materials
employed by the ancient Egyptians over the five millennia of the
Predynastic and Pharaonic periods (c.5500-332 BC). During this
time, not only were there variations in the preferred materials for
particular types of artefacts, but also gradual processes of
technological change, and the industries of the Chalcolithic period
were complemented and sometimes superseded by the innovations of
the Bronze and Iron Ages. Among the topics covered are stone
quarrying, the building of temples and pyramids, techniques for
preserving meat, fish, and poultry, glass and faience, the baking
of bread, brewing of beers, preparation of oils and perfumes, and
the mummification of humans and animals. Each chapter has been
written by one or more specialists, drawing not only on
conventional Egyptological skills but also on expertise in the
natural sciences as applied to archaeological data.
One in four school students struggle to read. "Phonics Handbook"
has been written to give assistance to teachers in helping students
with these reading difficulties. Taking a phonological approach,
the book is set out in the form of lesson plans that can be used
instantly, requiring no preparation. This book is the result of
five years research trials in reading clinics directed by the
author.
"Phonics Handbook" includes lesson plans for every phonics
skill: from the basic alphabet sounds to blends, digraphs and
syllable breaking. Each lesson is followed by a worksheet for
students.
The book includes diagnostic assessments of phoneme awareness,
basic decoding skills, invented spelling, writing, and attitudes to
reading. There is a test of word reading and an informal reading
inventory. In this way, the book helps the tutor make assessments,
of the students' needs at the outset, and of whether the tutoring
has been effective at the end of the programme.
Finally, the book offers a range of alternative teaching
strategies. It includes advice on helping students with English as
a second language, as well as those with difficulties ranging from
dyslexia to motivation and attention problems. Whether the aim is
to reinforce spelling, assist reading comprehension, or teach 'hard
to teach' students, "Phonics Handbook" gives research-based advice
on best practice.

This book reports on the excavation of a faience kiln at Kom Helul,
Memphis. The kiln is of the early Roman Period and appears to be of
the same type as those excavated by Flinders Petrie in the early
twentieth century. The book attempts to place Petrie's finds in
their archaeological context and to reinterpret his evidence in the
light of findings from the new excavation. In so doing, a new
outline of the chaine operatoire of faience production during the
Roman Period is proposed and its relationship to the making of
pre-Roman faience is discussed. The book includes an illustrated
catalogue of finds.
This neurological, "reverse-engineering" analysis of the spatial
and temporal characteristics of meditation-induced light visions
observed by the author and described in ancient Indian, Tibetan,
and Chinese texts is an indispensable reference for neuroscientific
researchers, physicians, psychotherapists, anthropologists,
scholars of religion, and intellectually curious meditators. The
analysis shows how sleep rhythms generate meditative states and how
destabilization of sleep rhythms triggers hypersynchronous activity
in corticothalamic circuits that drives the emergence of
hippocampal seizures with ecstatic attributes. A review of EEG
studies of experienced meditators reveals the unacknowledged
presence of topological patterns typical of simple partial seizure.
The book includes detailed, empirically-oriented drawings of the
complete progression of light visions and charts that compare
descriptions of light visions in ancient texts.

New petrological data lie behind the discussions in this thesis
which aims for a broad, and perhaps theoretical, 'World- System
Perspective'.
Aimed primarily at Egyptologists and archaeologists, this book covers all aspects of craftwork in ancient Egypt, from the construction of the pyramids and the carving of statues to techniques of mummification, boat-building, jewelery making, ancient brewing, carpentry, hairstyling, tailoring and basket weaving. Drawing on archaeological, experimental, ethnographic and laboratory work, it is the first book since the 1920s to describe current research into the actual basics of life in Pharaonic Egypt. The twenty-five chapters, by well-regarded scholars, present up-to-date and accessible information on a wide array of techniques.
