This volume of essays in honour of Professor R. H. Hilton is presented by some of his numerous friends and pupils. It attempts to reflect his wide-ranging interests while highlighting certain themes and preserving some distinct degree of unity. The essays illustrate his abiding concern with the social structure, the rural economy and the mentalite of the Middle Ages. They also indicate that his interests have have always been pursued with the use of the widest possible range of sources so that archaeological and literary evidence are employed, as in his own work, alongside the sources more usually familiar to social historians. This book will be of permanent interest to all historians and particularly those specialising in social and economic history.

The articles in this book, reprinted from the journal Past and Present, are all, in different ways, concerned with the ownership of landed property in medieval England and with those who worked the land. Problems debated include those concerning the keeping intact of the great estates of the Anglo-Norman barons in the face of both inheritance claims and of political manipulation by the crown. Other articles show that the difficulties of knights and lesser gentry were no less complex, as social shifts resulted from economic developments as well as from their military role and their relationships with their overlords. The essays are of as much importance for those interested in the history of politics as to those concerned with the economy and society of medieval England.

This book contains eight articles, six of which are based on papers contributed to a commemoration conference organised by the Past and Present Society in 1981. Two further articles and an introduction are contributed by other experts. They explore the various dimensions of the rising of 1381: the discontent of peasants and townspeople who became politicised in response to government tax demands; reasons for the attitudes of the subordinated classes to the law, which they perceived as being the instrument of their oppressors; the response of the ruling class and its government to one of the most coherent challenges to feudal order in the Middle Ages. In addition, two contributions on social movements in fourteenth-century France and Italy show that the rising can be regarded as a symptom of the general crisis of European feudal society in the later Middle Ages.

Robert Brenner's article on the agrarian class structure and economic development of pre-industrial Europe, originally published in 1976, has inspired much debate. This collection assembles the essays that together comprise one of the most significant historical controversies of recent years.

This volume describes a century of rapid and fundamental change. Under the Tudors the University witnessed the dramatic intrusion of successive governments into its affairs by visitations, and by the supplanting of the medieval regime of the regent masters with government by heads of houses. In the background to these violent changes the college evolved into the ordinary home of the undergraduate, displacing the medieval private hall, and Oxford acquired its familiar character as an association of endowed collegiate undergraduate societies. The intellectual counterpart of this institutional change was the spread of humanism, particularly in the faculty of arts. This volume challenges the view that these changes were purely unofficial and extra-curricular, and argues that the statutory curriculum, properly understood, was an integral part of this humanistic, neo-Aristotelian, and cosmopolitan Latin culture. Volume V shows a contrasting picture of eighteenth-century Oxford to that presented by Edward Gibbon in his Autobiography. A more balanced assessment has been long overdue. From detailed studies it is now possible to show that in most subjects Oxford had a reputation that was far from contemptible, and one that attracted foreign scholars in some numbers. Academic responsibilities were taken seriously and reforming minds were at work. Attention is given to the University's role in national politics, its social and administrative structure, and its relationship with the Church, as well as the full range of academic life and culture in eighteenth-century Oxford.
