The role of energy in the modern world goes beyond mere technology
and economics to influence welfare, environment, life quality and,
broadly, civilisation. Since the industrial revolution, energy
conversion technology has been at the forefront of innovation
required to satisfy the needs of mankind. This technology more than
others has always been very dependent on the performance of the
materials used; especially over the last two decades during which
efficiency and environmental concerns have become challenging
objectives. In this context the European Commission has developed
significant collaborative programmes in Europe within the COST
framework, to enhance the state of the art in this technology. The
Li ge Conferences pursue the mission to report on the achievements
of these programmes in the light of progress made elsewhere. The
first four conferences in this series were held in 1978, 1982, 1986
and 1990, and provided the opportunity to present and review the
work of the European Materials Collaborative Programmes COST-50
(gas turbines), COST-505 (steam turbines) and COST- 501 (energy
conversion from fossil fuels). The proceedings of these conferences
were published by Applied Science Publishers (1978) and by D.
ReideIlKluwer Publishing Company (1982, 1986 and 1990). While the
first two Conferences have dealt essentially with high temperature
alloys for gas turbines (COST 50), the third and fourth Conferences
held in 1986 and 1990 were concerned with a broader range of
topics, including the work of the third round of COST-50
(1972-1983), that of COST-50l, which was initiated in 1981 and COST
505 (1983-1990).
Although precise figures are difficult to ascertain, surveys
suggest that approximately 20%–25% of female-identified and
5%–10% of male-identified college students experience sexual
assault, and 10% of all students experience psychological or
physical abuse by an intimate partner. Among trans, nonbinary, and
other gender-expansive students, rates are even higher. With
consequences that can include emotional distress, difficulty
concentrating and focusing on academic work, mood changes,
excessive substance use, and self-harming behaviors, it's clear
that sexual assault and intimate partner violence are issues that
require an emergent response. Leveraging knowledge from psychiatry,
college mental health, and higher education, Facing Campus Sexual
Assault and Relationship Violence With Courage offers a holistic
approach to preventing, addressing, and mitigating the effects of
campus sexual and relationship violence. This guide combines the
latest science with real-world knowledge and practical application
in four sections that examine: Prevention strategies from early
childhood to middle and high school and on through the collegiate
and graduate level, including how to establish a foundation for
consensual, nonviolent relationships. Systems of response and care,
from institutional responses, including Title IX policy, to models
of trauma-informed campus care. Clinical interventions for
survivors of campus sexual violence—with a special chapter
focused on graduate students—as well as perpetrators. Support for
students from marginalized communities, including queer and
gender-expansive students and students of color. The book also
offers a frank assessment of the power imbalances and systems of
oppression—White supremacy, racism, patriarchy, homophobia, and
transphobia among them—that underpin sexual and relationship
violence. In doing so, it provides a pathway for institutions of
higher education and mental health professionals alike to dismantle
these systems of institutionalized oppression that are all too
common in higher education.
This handbook describes methods of preparation, characterization,
toxicity, and therapeutic indices of transition metal complexes of
the naturally occurring heterocyclic nucleobases and their
derivatives. Modes of coordination are listed together with the
relevant spectral data and major methods of investigation. Where
appropriate, the spectrum of the sample is included in the
pertinent section on spectroscopy. Data on the uncomplexed bases,
such as solubility, pK, accepted structure(s) in the solid state
and solutions, and the natural occurrence of the base are also
included. Volume II of this work provides the spectroscopic data to
accompany Volume I. Volume II is divided into two sections: Section
1 summarizes the data and Section 2 is comprised of figures. In
Section 1, the complexes are arranged according to the method of
study. In Section 2, figures are listed by base type and follow the
sequence of Volume I, mainly complexes of the pyrimidine bases,
nucleosides and nucleotides, and then purine bases, nucleosides,
and nucleotides.
