At the beginning of 1736, Voltaire was at the height of his
success, receiving praise from the public and fellow-poets alike.
The breathtaking breadth of Voltaire's activity this year ranges
from comedy, "L'Enfant Prodigue", and a major philosophical poem,
"Le Mondain", to public and private verse, including one of his
most arresting satires in "Le Crepinade", aimed at Jean-Baptiste
Rousseau. Voltaire relished the diversity of his literary output,
as he did the stimulation of his burgeoning scientific interests
and lively correspondence. However, despite the popular acclaim,
literary quarrels and lawsuits caused continuous tension, forcing
Voltaire by the end of the year, to flee France and the
'persecution' his fame had brought him.
Following his traumatic departure from the court of Frederick the
Great, Voltaire wrote "L'Orphelin de la Chine", a play later
identified as a turning point in French theatre from the point of
view of costume and set design. As he settled in Switzerland, he
composed the "Epitre de l'auteur, en arrivant dans sa terre pres du
lac de Geneve". Yet he remained alert to goings-on in the outside
world: in Italy, with the "Examen du Testament politique du
cardinal Alberoni", in Portugal, with the "Poeme sur le desastre de
Lisbonne", which grapples with the problem of human suffering and
foreshadows "Candide", and in Austria and Hungary, with some
shorter poems.
Caught in the Crossfire presents a multifaceted explanation of why
people participate in something as dangerous and uncertain as a
revolutionary movement. Beginning with an analysis of the
grievances that motivate peasant participation in political
movements, the book also explores the additional factors
leadership, resources, and strategies required to mobilize peasants
for collective action. Collective action itself need not be
violent, but a repressive state response can quickly transform a
reformist movement into a revolution. Mason shows how different
strategies on the part of various actors can result in a government
victory, a rebel victory, or a negotiated settlement. The book
concludes with a look to the future: Will the emerging trends
toward political democratization and economic globalization make
revolution in the countryside more or less likely?
Written substantially in the late 1740s and published between 1747
and 1749, the three contes which are collected in this volume are
among the best known of Voltaire's works. They were composed at a
time when Voltaire had abandoned the tranquillity of Cirey for the
tumult of Paris and Versailles, and was enjoying new recognition
from members of the court and the learned societies. The three
contes in the present volume, "Zadig", "Memnon" and "Le Monde comme
il va", mark a new departure for Voltaire. They are the first of
his fictional writings to be composed especially for the general
reading public. Secure in his official prestige by the late 1740s,
Voltaire felt free to publish these fictional experiments which
adapt the popular mode of oriental fiction, parodying and
pastiching the works of other writers - while at the same time
offering serious criticisms of French society and his reflections
on the nature of human happiness and the problem of evil.

Extensive discoveries have been made about the roles of the
neurotransmitter substances noradrenaline and dopamine in human
beings as well as in experimental animals. The book starts with a
description of the anatomy of the catecholamine pathways of the
brain and a summary of the pharmacological manipulations available
for studying them. Stephen Mason's main concerns, however, are with
the studies of the part played by these brain systems in motor
behaviour, learning and reward mechanisms, and cognitive and
vegetative behaviour. Finally, he deals with the catecholamines in
human clinical psychopathology. Throughout, the book details the
experiments from which conclusions are drawn in such a way as to
illuminate the process of scientific discovery for students, and to
highlight the limitations and the gaps in our present knowledge.
There are many illustrations, and commonly used behavioural
paradigms and terminology are explained in an appendix. Included
are over 1200 references to the original research literature. The
book will thus be of particular interest to students in brain and
behaviour courses, in psychology, physiology, pharmacology and a
wide range of neurosciences, and to their teachers. It will also be
valuable to research workers as the most comprehensive and detailed
summary of the present state of knowledge in this fascinating
research area.
