T. Peters
R1,335 Discovery Miles 13 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Computing the Environment presents practical workflows and guidance for designers to get feedback on their design using digital design tools on environmental performance. Starting with an extensive state-of-the-art survey of what top international offices are currently using in their design projects, this book presents detailed descriptions of the tools, algorithms, and workflows used and discusses the theories that underlie these methods. Project examples from Transsolar Klimaengineering, Buro Happold's SMART Group, Behnish Behnisch Architects, Thomas Herzog, Autodesk Research are contextualized with quotes and references to key thinkers in this field such as Eric Winsberg, Andrew Marsh, Michelle Addington and Ali Malkawi.

Inside Smartgeometry - Expanding the Architectural Possibilities of Computational Design (Hardcover, New): T. Peters Inside Smartgeometry - Expanding the Architectural Possibilities of Computational Design (Hardcover, New)
T. Peters
R1,061 Discovery Miles 10 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Smartgeometry (SG) has had an enormous influence on the emerging architectural community interested in exploring creative computational methods for the design of buildings. An informal international network of practitioners and researchers, the group meets annually to experiment with new technologies and collaborate to develop digital design techniques.

SG was founded in 2001 by London-based architects and friends Hugh Whitehead (Foster + Partners), J Parrish (Aecom) and Lars Hesselgren (PLP). At the time there were little in the way of parametric tools for architecture. SG was founded to encourage development, discussion and experimentation relating to new digital design environments that could be driven by design intent rather than based on construction specifications. The need for new ways of design thinking led to the parallel development of software GenerativeComponents which was tested in the early years of the annual workshops. In response to the needs of designers, the ecology of these design environments has diversified to include multiple software platforms, as well as innovative fabrication techniques and interactive environments.

SG calls for a re-consideration of the design process, where the creation of computational mechanisms become an integral part of designing - not a task done prior to or separate from the process. From pencil to algorithm, the tools that architects use directly influence their creative process. New design tools and new design environments therefore mean a requisite re-thinking of what architecture is, and can be. "Inside Smartgeometry" examines and contextualizes the work of the SG community: the digital spaces, prototypes, and buildings designed using bespoke tools created in response to architectural ideas.

From interactive crowd-sourcing tools to responsive agent-based systems to complex digitally fabricated structures, this book explores more than a decade of advances that have influenced both the practice of architecture and the theory that drives it. SG has grown from a handful of experts to an international network of designers who are helping to define design environments of the future. Founded by digital pioneers it creates the algorithmic designers of the future.

This book can be seen as a retroactive manifesto for SG, celebrating the varied approaches to computational design explored by forward thinking practitioners and researchers. Through twenty-three original texts including reflections by the founders, and texts by Robert Aish, Martin Bechthold, Rob Woodbury, Chris Williams and Mark Burry, the book offers a critical state of the art of computational design for architecture. SG has been relevant to many international design and engineering offices and the book includes chapters by practitioners from offices such as Foster + Partners, Grimshaw, SOM, Design2Production, CASE, and Populous.

Handbook of Integrative Dermatology - An Evidence-Based Approach (Paperback, 1st ed. 2015): Peter A. Lio, Toral Patel, Neill T.... Handbook of Integrative Dermatology - An Evidence-Based Approach (Paperback, 1st ed. 2015)

This user-friendly reference tool presents clinical scenarios and discusses some practical complementary and alternative therapies available in dermatology. It focuses on peer-reviewed data that are suitable for use in a conventional dermatology practice and helps dermatologists guide their patients when faced with questions regarding integrative dermatology using an evidence-based, reader-friendly, and case-focused approach. Within the field of dermatology, there is a marked void in the understanding of complementary and alternative approaches, though dermatologists frequently use off-label therapies to manage chronic conditions. They do so, however, with a range of success and potentially considerable side effect profiles. Handbook of Integrative Dermatology is a must-have tool for any practicing dermatologist.

What Democrats Talk about When They Talk about God is a collection of essays on the religious communication of members of the Democratic Party, past and present-in office, while campaigning, and in their public and private writing. While many books on the market address issues at the intersection of church and state, none to date have focused exclusively on Democrats as important participants in the dialogue about religion and politics.

Conserving the Commonwealth - The Early Years of the Environmental Movement in Virginia (Hardcover): Margaret T. Peters Conserving the Commonwealth - The Early Years of the Environmental Movement in Virginia (Hardcover)
Margaret T. Peters; Edited by Patricia Cecil Hass; Afterword by FitzGerald Bemiss
R811 Discovery Miles 8 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Conserving the Commonwealth" is the book that anyone interested in conservation and environmental issues has been waiting for. This history describes the earliest days of Virginia's environmental movement, recounting the efforts of a farsighted group of leaders to preserve Virginia's priceless resources--open land, waterways, and historic sites--and to create new parks within reach of all the state's citizens.

In 1965, Governor Albertis Harrison selected State Senator FitzGerald Bemiss to chair a commission-the Virginia Outdoor Recreation Study Commission-to make recommendations for improving the state's outdoor recreation facilities. Inspired by Bemiss's leadership and a newly awakened concern for the environment, the commission reached far beyond its mandate, addressing the entire range of the Commonwealth's natural and man-made resources: open land, pristine waterways, and historic buildings. The result was Virginia's Common Wealth, a publication that inspired the environmental movement for the balance of the twentieth century and served as the framework for Virginia's public efforts to conserve its natural and historic resources.

Bemiss gained powerful advocates for Virginia's environment in governors Linwood Holton and Gerald L. Baliles, delegate Tayloe Murphy, attorney George Freeman, and law professor A. E. Dick Howard. Beyond the public administrative and legal history of governmental environmental efforts, "Conserving the Commonwealth" recounts the efforts of private groups such as the Virginia chapter of The Nature Conservancy, the Piedmont Environmental Council, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and the APVA Preservation Virginia, which all fought valiantly to preserve Virginia's fragile open spaces and irreplaceable historic sites and buildings. The book also points out that in spite of all those early efforts, the state of Virginia's environmental health today is deeply threatened.

In his afterword, FitzGerald Bemiss reflects on the continuing need for regional planning, an efficient public transportation system, and funding for existing programs. Three appendices provide tabular information on Virginia's state parks and conservation easements, and include the text of a 1965 article by FitzGerald Bemiss on urban political needs. The book will be of interest to planners, environmentalists, and preservationists, and to all who care about preserving Virginia's natural resources.

Benjamin T. Peters, Dorothy Day
R885 Discovery Miles 8 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In his address to Congress in September 2015, Pope Francis surprised many when he included Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton along with Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr, as examples of four "great Americans" he wished to extol. While perhaps better known than Merton, adding Day to the pantheon of great figures in American history was certainly significant. Indeed, since her death in 1980, there has been a steadily growing recognition of the importance of Dorothy Day along with a steadily growing body of scholarship on her. All of which has only been bolstered by the renewed move to have Day canonized. Unfortunately, absent from all this study and promotion of Day and her causes has been much attention on Fr. John Hugo and "the retreat" that exerted such a profound effect on her in the 1940s, bringing about her "second conversion." There are very real reasons why these important theological sources have been overlooked or even ignored, reasons largely rooted in the context of early twentieth-century American Catholicism. Called to be Saints offers a theological and historical analysis of the role that Hugo and the retreat play in understanding Day and the radical Christianity she put forth-a notion of the Christian life that remains relevant today.
