This book explores a sensational crime and trial that took place in Rome in the late 1870s, when the bloody killing of a war hero triggered a national spectacle. A young southern wife's murder of her impotent soldier husband exploded into the first great "media circus" in the new nation of Italy. The trial of the widow and her acrobat lover shocked the young nation not only with its gruesome details, but also because masses of women flocked to the court, took sides and heatedly reacted to testimony, as a new generation of newspapers exploited the scandal to enchant an untapped readership. Largely ignored by historians, the Fadda Affair, as it was called, crucially shaped the young nation's self-image, but it still resists reduction to historiographical formula, even as its raucous messiness presages the postmodern centrality of performance and the displacement of substance by sensation.
An insightful look into the origins of modern Italian media culture by examining a sensational crime and trial that took place in Rome in the late 1870s, when a bloody murder triggered a national spectacle that became the first great media circus in the new nation of Italy, crucially shaping the young state's public sphere and image of itself.
In 2008, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centers (UPMC) hoisted its logo atop the U.S. Steel Building in downtown Pittsburgh, symbolically declaring that the era of big steel had been replaced by the era of big medicine for this once industrial city. More than 1,200 miles to the south, a similar sense of optimism pervaded the public discourse around the relationship between health care and the future of Houston's economy. While traditional Texas industries like oil and natural gas still played a critical role, the presence of the massive Texas Medical Center, billed as "the largest medical complex in the world," had helped to rebrand the city as a site for biomedical innovation and ensured its stability during the financial crisis of the mid-2000s. Taking Pittsburgh and Houston as case studies, The Medical Metropolis offers the first comparative, historical account of how big medicine transformed American cities in the postindustrial era. Andrew T. Simpson explores how the hospital-civic relationship, in which medical centers embraced a business-oriented model, remade the deindustrialized city into the "medical metropolis." From the 1940s to the present, the changing business of American health care reshaped American cities into sites for cutting-edge biomedical and clinical research, medical education, and innovative health business practices. This transformation relied on local policy and economic decisions as well as broad and homogenizing national forces, including HMOs, biotechnology programs, and hospital privatization. Today, the medical metropolis is considered by some as a triumph of innovation and revitalization and by others as a symbol of the excesses of capitalism and the inequality still pervading American society.
As an avid sports fan, what can I say: I'M HOOKED. Have been hooked, still is hooked, and will continue to be hooked (for better or worse). Where does the obsession come from? Heck, a number of things come to mind, but the one aspect of sports that have drawn fans even more to the game, lifts sports to prodigious heights, and hooks me the most is without a doubt: RIVALRIES I'm staying off the subject of team rivalries and gearing my attention towards individual rivalries or as I like to call them, TWO-WAY RIVALRIES When you think of the exceptional two-way rivalries that stand out throughout sports history, the obvious ones pop in your head: Ali-Frazier, Nicklaus-Palmer, Wilt- Russell, Magic-Bird, Manning-Brady, Evert-Navratilova, Agassi- Sampras, Federer-Nadal, Borg-McEnroe, Bradshaw-Staubach, Williams-DiMaggio, etc. Great list isn't it, although I want you to shift your attention - AGAIN -- to another type of rivalry that just doesn't include two players going at each other head-to-head...but involves three players. Remember the "Two-Way Rivalry" from earlier? Well, I'm bringing you the brand, spanking new, THREE-WAY RIVALRY (I went with three-way rivalry over three-way triangle because it was more original, even though triangle sounds better).
The Brotherhood of Olympus and the Deadliest Game, is the first of a series of young adult horror/fantasy novels that tells the story of Drake Frasier, a painfully shy, intellectually gifted 13 year old boy growing up in Aberdeen, Washington. On a cold, gray Friday the thirteenth, his favorite uncle is killed in a horrible car collision with a logging truck. Drake's life takes a sudden twist after the accident when his family begins to encounter haunting spirits that bring terror and doom upon them. He soon finds that he has unique gifts and abilities that allow him to fight the apparitions, and that there may be a greater sinister plot afoot. But as Drake develops his skills to combat the ghastly specters, his oldest brother continues to use a Spirit board game that invites the evil into their lives. Drake must bring his brothers back together to fight the nefarious forces to save his family, and quite possibly the world.
