The Mexican drug wars have inspired countless articles, TV shows and movies. From Breaking Bad to Sicario, El Chapo's escapes to Trump's tirades, this is a story we think we know. But there's a hidden history to the biggest story of the twenty-first century. The Dope exposes how an illicit industry that started with farmers, families and healers came to be dominated by cartels, kingpins and corruption. Benjamin T Smith traces an unforgettable cast of characters from the early twentieth century to the modern day, whose actions came to influence Mexico as we now know it.
There's Enrique Fernandez, the borderlands trafficker who became Mexico's first major narco and one of the first victims of the war on drugs; Eduardo 'Lalo' Fernandez, Mexico's most prominent heroin chemist and first major cocaine importer; Leopoldo Salazar Viniegra, the brilliant doctor and Marxist who tried (and failed) to decriminalize Mexico's drugs; and Harry Anslinger, the head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics whose sensationalist strategies paved the way for U.S. interference and the extraordinary levels of violence in Mexico today.
The Dope is the epic saga of how violence and corruption came to plague modern Mexico, and the first book to make sense of the political and economic big picture of the Mexican drug wars.

This unique book is the product of a south/north, east/west
collaboration, involving some 90 contributors from 25 countries. It
will be invaluable to all concerned with livestock keeping and
poverty alleviation in developing countries, especially lecturers,
students and those working with resource-poor livestock keepers.
Livestock and Wealth Creation is about the role of livestock in
developing countries and portrays how improved husbandry practices
can affect the livelihoods of livestock keepers. It emphasises ways
of improving small-scale enterprises and subsistence
livestock-keeping. The burgeoning 'Livestock Revolution', which is
already occurring in some developing countries and foreseen to
become a wider phenomenon over the next 20 years, is also
considered. A gigantic increase in demand for meat and milk is
predicted, with consequent opportunities for resource-poor
livestock keepers to contribute and move from subsistence to
market-oriented production.

The media is full of reference to failing schools, troublesome
pupils, underperforming boys, disappearing childhood and a teaching
profession in crisis as more and more teachers contemplate
abandoning their careers. Key Questions in Education looks at the
current and historical debates of each of these issues, examining
how a multitude of stakeholders have viewed, and still view,
childhood and schooling. In highlighting how these same or similar
issues have persistently been debated throughout time, John T.
Smith shows something of their complexity and the need to break
apart these key enduring questions in education. Each chapter
covers a key question such as: How far should the state interfere
in education? Should schools feed their pupils? and Why do children
misbehave? Analysing each key question, chapters discuss how such
issues were viewed or defined in the past, what solutions and
outcomes were envisaged and compare and contrast how this relates
to where we are now. Clear links are made throughout between
historical sources and current ideology, policy, practice and
research. In opening up these debates through case studies and
vignettes, students are encouraged to reflect on how these
contentious issues might be resolved and how this affects them as
future educators.
Alfred Tarski (1901-1983) was a renowned Polish/American
mathematician, a giant of the twentieth century, who helped
establish the foundations of geometry, set theory, model theory,
algebraic logic and universal algebra. Throughout his career, he
taught mathematics and logic at universities and sometimes in
secondary schools. Many of his writings before 1939 were in Polish
and remained inaccessible to most mathematicians and historians
until now. This self-contained book focuses on Tarski's early
contributions to geometry and mathematics education, including the
famous Banach-Tarski paradoxical decomposition of a sphere as well
as high-school mathematical topics and pedagogy. These themes are
significant since Tarski's later research on geometry and its
foundations stemmed in part from his early employment as a
high-school mathematics teacher and teacher-trainer. The book
contains careful translations and much newly uncovered social
background of these works written during Tarski's years in Poland.
Alfred Tarski: Early Work in Poland serves the mathematical,
educational, philosophical and historical communities by publishing
Tarski's early writings in a broadly accessible form, providing
background from archival work in Poland and updating Tarski's
bibliography. A list of errata can be found on the author Smith's
personal webpage.
The 5th edition of Calculus: Early Transcendental Functions
maintains the critical components for which this calculus text is
well known: facilitating mastery of prerequisite algebra and
trigonometry skills, offering an elegant presentation of calculus
concepts that is rigorous yet accessible, and including classic
calculus problems such as applications for STEM and business
disciplines. Key features of the new edition: The new edition
benefits from an accessible layout and presentation of graphs for
topics like limits and continuity and area under the curve. A
thorough revision has been carried out of all end-of-chapter
problems and exercises and 120 new exercises have been added to the
text and Connect. Introduction of "mind mapping" to help students
understand the nature of calculus problems and develop
problem-solving techniques that integrate multiple pieces of
information. Improved approach to integration by starting with the
antiderivatives. The inclusion of tabular integration by parts in
Chapter 6. Enhanced coverage of first-order linear differential
equations in Chapter 7. Two new sections on Laplace transforms have
been introduced in Chapter 15, as well as material on how to solve
second-order differential equations using Laplace transforms.
