Ghana's universities face socioeconomic challenges in the context of SAPs and fiscal restraint. The Partnership for Higher Education in Africa commissioned case studies of higher education provision in Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa, as part of its effort to stimulate enlightened, equitable, and knowledge-based national development, and to provide guides to understanding. This study is set in the context of Ghana's socioeconomic realities, in an economy dominated by structural adjustment programming, fiscal restraint and Ghana's recent status as a Heavily Indebted Poor Country (HIPC). Ghana's public universities have faced competition from offshore universities as well as from non-university centres of knowledge production andresearch. This new competition is taking place within the context of neo-liberal economic policies characterized by market-led reforms and private sector initiatives. Analyses the different strategies and measures that the universities have taken to expand enrollment, generate additional funding and review curricula and modes of operation in an attempt to respond to these challenges. Modernization as Spectacle in Africa (Paperback): Peter J. Bloom, Stephan F. Miescher, Takyiwaa Manuh Modernization as Spectacle in Africa (Paperback)
Peter J. Bloom, Stephan F. Miescher, Takyiwaa Manuh; Contributions by Percy Hintzen, Andrew Apter, …
R868 Discovery Miles 8 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For postcolonial Africa, modernization was seen as a necessary outcome of the struggle for independence and as crucial to the success of its newly established states. Since then, the rhetoric of modernization has pervaded policy, culture, and development, lending a kind of political theatricality to nationalist framings of modernization and Africans perceptions of their place in the global economy. These 15 essays address governance, production, and social life; the role of media; and the discourse surrounding large-scale development projects, revealing modernization's deep effects on the expressive culture of Africa."

An important feature of Ghanaian tertiary education is the foundational African Studies Programme which was initiated in the early 1960s. Unfortunately hardly any readers exist which bring together a body of knowledge on the themes, issues and debates which inform and animate research and teaching in African Studies particularly on the African continent. This becomes even more important when we consider the need for knowledge on Africa that is not Eurocentric or sensationalised, but driven from internal understandings of life and prospects in Africa. Dominant representations and perceptions of Africa usually depict a continent in crisis. Rather than buying into external representations of Africa, with its 'lacks' and aspirations for Western modernities, we insist that African scholars in particular should be in the forefront of promoting understanding of the pluri-lingual, overlapping, and dense reality of life and developments on the continent, to produce relevant and usable knowledge. Continuing and renewed interest in Africa's resources, including the land mass, economy, minerals, visual arts and performance cultures, as well as bio-medical knowledge and products, by old and new geopolitical players, obliges African scholars to transcend disciplinary boundaries and to work with each other to advance knowledge and uses of those resources in the interests of Africa's people.

Africa After Gender? (Paperback): Catherine M. Cole, Takyiwaa Manuh, Stephan F. Miescher Africa After Gender? (Paperback)
Catherine M. Cole, Takyiwaa Manuh, Stephan F. Miescher
R637 Discovery Miles 6 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Gender is one of the most productive, dynamic, and vibrant areas of Africanist research today. But what is the meaning of gender in an African context? Why does gender usually connote women? Why has gender taken hold in Africa when feminism hasn t? Is gender yet another Western construct that has been applied to Africa however ill-suited and riddled with assumptions? Africa After Gender? looks at Africa now that gender has come into play to consider how the continent, its people, and the term itself have changed. Leading Africanist historians, anthropologists, literary critics, and political scientists move past simple dichotomies, entrenched debates, and polarizing identity politics to present an evolving discourse of gender. They show gender as an applied rather than theoretical tool and discuss themes such as the performance of sexuality, lesbianism, women s political mobilization, the work of gendered NGOs, and the role of masculinity in a gendered world. For activists, students, and scholars, this book reveals a rich and cross-disciplinary view of the status of gender in Africa today.
