Featuring a collection of informative and descriptive chapters,
this book is essential reading for environmental scientists,
environmental toxicologists and people from allied fields. The
research and its outcomes presented here focus on pollution
prevention approaches, clean technologies and toxic use reduction
that has the potential for eliminating worker exposure to health
risks; and creates healthy and sustainable ecosystems. Readers will
discover ways to incorporate prevention in the design of industrial
processes that help to eliminate harmful environmental effects
while promoting the competitiveness of industries. Issues such as
biological control agents for sustainable urban agriculture, safe
water and soil health; waste management and utilization in food
processing industries, and ranking of Benzene, Toluene,
Ethylbenzene and Xylene (BTEX) with respect to ozone formation are
addressed in this book. Particular attention is given to
interrelated issues associated with global warming and the use of
genetically engineered organisms (GEM's) for combating pollution in
extreme environments. The authors invite researchers to think
through the critical analysis presented here and recommend future
pathways for further research.
This volume provides up-to-date information on toxic pollutants in
the environment and their harmful effects on human health and
nature. The book covers many important aspects of environmental
toxicology, such as features, characterization, applications,
environmental routes for dispersion, nanotoxicity, ecotoxicity and
genotoxicity of nanomaterials, with emphasis on radiation
toxicology, polar ecotoxicology, plastic toxicology, microbrial
toxicology, nanotoxicology and pesticide toxicology. Also discussed
is the use of microbes and nanotechnology for medicinal purposes,
which has revealed important chemical prototypes in the discovery
of new agents, stimulating the use of refined physical techniques
and new syntheses of molecules with pharmaceutical applications for
human welfare. The chapters also address the fate of nanoparticles
in the environment, as well as nanotoxicology mechanisms impacting
human health. The book will be of interest to toxicologists,
environmental scientists, chemists, and students of microbiology,
nanotechnology and pharmacology.

This book addresses the consequences of high agricultural pesticide
use over the last few decades in the form of organophosphate
poisoning. The authors provide a background overview of
organophosphate compounds, their environmental toxicity, non-target
exposures and cases of human poisoning. The authors also compile
and analyze data from the last two decades to demonstrate the
toxicological aspects of organophosphates, and how they can pose a
threat to human health. Readers will learn about the clinical
manifestation of organophosphate exposure in humans, as well as the
enzymatic pathways and mechanisms by which organophosphates are
processed in the body and cause harm. The book concludes by
providing techniques, practices and recommendations for how to
manage organophosphate exposure and poisoning. It will be useful
for clinicians and public health professionals, scientists, medical
practitioners, researchers and environmental toxicologists.
Coumaphos is an organophosphorous acaricide which is used for
control of cattle ticks in vats. Methods fo stabilization of
coumaphos i.e. increased shelf life for the use of coumaphos
suspension in the vats by maintaining pH has been given. Huge
quantity of coumaphos waste solution is generated because of
decrease in efficacy after prolonged use with treatment of large
number of cattle. Procedures for safe disposal of coumaphos in soil
by dealkylation and use of UV and solar radiation are described.
