"A fascinating 'creative nonfiction' account of the greatest
unsolved mystery in Swedish history." -Wall Street Journal "It's
more than just a thrilling book...There's a lot of evidence that
points to an international conspiracy." -CBS This Morning Saturday
The author of the Millennium novels laid out the clues. Now a
journalist is following them. When Stieg Larsson died, the author
of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo had been working on a true
mystery that out-twisted his Millennium novels: the assassination
on February 28, 1986, of Olof Palme, the Swedish prime minister. It
was the first time in history that a head of state had been
murdered without a clue who'd done it-and on a Stockholm street at
point-blank range. Internationally known for his fictional
villains, Larsson was well acquainted with their real-life
counterparts and documented extremist activities throughout the
world. For years he'd been amassing evidence that linked their
terrorist acts to what he called "one of the most astounding murder
cases" he'd ever covered. Larsson's archive was forgotten until
journalist Jan Stocklassa was given exclusive access to the
author's secret project. In The Man Who Played with Fire,
Stocklassa collects the pieces of Larsson's true-crime puzzle to
follow the trail of intrigue, espionage, and conspiracy begun by
one of the world's most famous thriller writers. Together they set
out to solve a mystery that no one else could.
In this savage saga of love, war, lust, and magic set in the tenth
century, young Sigrid is destined to be the mother of the king of
the Nordic lands that would become Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and
England. A devout believer in the old Nordic gods, Sigrid is
visited regularly in her dreams by the goddess Freya, who whispers
to her of the future. Though Sigrid is beautiful, rich, arrogant,
and matchlessly clever, her uncanny ability to foresee the future
and manipulate the present guides her through dangerous politics as
a bloody war between Vikings and Christians rages on. Sigrid's
father wants her to marry Erik, a local king, to secure the peace
between the Goths and the Swedes. Thinking she is doing Freya's
will, she accepts the marriage offer, only to find that her destiny
lies not with Erik but with Sweyn, a warrior who dreams of
dethroning Harald Bluetooth, the legendary ruler of Denmark. Will
Sigrid sacrifice her will for the greatest Viking kingdom of all
time, or will she follow her heart at the risk of losing
everything?

High Coast, the island community is tiny, but bolstered by a
bustling tourist industry. It's where Detective Sofia Hjorten

The epic Valhalla saga continues as bloody power struggles sweep
across the Nordic lands and a Viking queen's daughter must forge
her own destiny. Fearless Queen Sigrid wants her twin children to
fulfill their destinies: her son, Olaf, to become heir to the
kingdom of Svealand, and her gifted daughter, Estrid, to secure
passage to the underworld as she is promised to Hel, the Norse
goddess of death. But Olaf's ascension to the throne depends on
Sigrid's former husband, King Erik the Victorious, who despises her
and suspects the twins are not his but Sweyn Forkbeard's, Denmark's
exiled king. As long as the Danish throne is in question, Christian
kingdoms and pagan clans battle for control. As Sigrid and her
people await Erik's return from war, a cross-worshipper is taken
captive, whose strange power over Estrid sways her to question her
allegiance to the death goddess. When Estrid is kidnapped, Sigrid
vows to rescue her-at any cost.
It's a rainy evening in a Stockholm suburb and five-year-old Tilda
is hiding under the kitchen table playing with her crayons when a
man enters and beats her mother to death in cold blood. The only
witness, Tilda can't quite see the murderer or figure out who he
is. But she's still a witness.
Across town, Siri Bergman and her best friend, Aina, are assisting
their old friend Vijay with a research project on domestic abuse.
They host a weekly self-help group for survivors, and over the
course of several dark, rainy evenings, these women share their
stories of impossible love, violence, and humiliation. When the
boyfriend of one of the women turns out to be a prime suspect in a
high-profile murder case, it isn't long before Siri finds herself
embroiled in the investigation. But as she draws closer to finding
the murderer, unexpected developments in her own life force her to
wonder: Can she learn to trust a man again in spite of being
surrounded by women who have been so deeply betrayed by love?
