This book comes strongly to the defence of educational theory and
shows that it has a structure and integrity of its own. The author
argues that the validity of educational theory may best be judged
in terms of the various assumptions made in it. His argument is
illustrated by a review and critique of some particularly
influential theories of education: those of Plato, Rousseau, James
Mill and John Dewey. He stresses the need for an on-going,
contemporary, general theory of education and examines the ways in
which the disciplines of psychology, sociology and philosophy can
contribute to a general theory of this kind.
A heartfelt portrait of Hank Aaron, featuring nearly 40 years of
stories plus never-before-told insights from the home run king When
journalist Terence Moore was 12 years old, he treasured his poster
of Henry Aaron. Years later, Aaron would sign it for him: "Best
wishes to Terry." Later still, Moore would be named an honorary
pall bearer at the home run king's funeral, staying up late into
the night with Aaron's widow, Billye, to get the obituary just
right for the program. Friends and family knew Aaron as
quick-witted, hilarious, and fiercely opinionated beyond what was
shown in public. With the encouragement of Aaron's family, Moore
now shares this intimate perspective on the baseball legend, the
culmination of decades of friendship and correspondence. The Real
Hank Aaron captures the icon's contagious laugh and pointed views,
from the depth of his admiration for Jackie Robinson to his true
thoughts on Barry Bonds and the steroid era. Also featuring Aaron's
views on race, politics, media, and sports fandom, this is a
charming and illuminating glimpse at the man outside the spotlight.

An exploration of the relation between language and our senses and
emotions, taking readers into domains as diverse as wine-tasting,
marriage guidance counselling, medical training and face
recognition. The authors argue that language is a double-edged
weapon, equally capable of clarifying and confusing. At best it
provides no more than a fragile bridge between us, sustained by
illusions we all share. Through language we can reconstruct
experiences in a way far-removed from what we actually lived, feign
understanding, hide what we actually feel, or talk with confidence
about what we ill-understand.

Voices in my Head by Terence Moore is an accessible and moving
selection of sonnets, villanelles and lyrics charting one man's
experience of living and loving, of hiding and revealing self, of
communicating and not, of ageing and nudging up to death. Terence
Moore was brought up in Horsham. After two years as a miner, he
read English at Trinity College, Cambridge. After graduating he
became an apprentice bookbinder then taught English to speakers of
other languages at Baroness Wangenheim's school in Oxford. In his
thirties he read linguistics for a Ph.D. at UCLA, where the focus
was on Chomsky's ideas on universal grammar. He stayed on as an
Assistant Professor of Linguistics, then returned to England, to
Essex University, then the Department of Linguistics, Cambridge. He
is a Fellow of Clare College. When not writing poetry he works on
John Locke and has published a number of 'conversations' with Locke
on language, truth and meaning.
