The Garland Handbook of Southeast Asian Music (Hardcover): Terry Miller, Sean Williams The Garland Handbook of Southeast Asian Music (Hardcover)
Terry Miller, Sean Williams
R5,682 Discovery Miles 56 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Garland Handbook of Southeast Asian Music is comprised of essays from The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music: Volume 4, Southeast Asia (1998). Largely revised and updated, the essays offer detailed, regional studies of the different musical cultures of Southeast Asia and examine the ways in which music helps to define the identity of this particular area. Part one provides an in-depth introduction to the area of Southeast Asia and explores a series of issues and processes, such as colonialism, mass media, spirituality, and war. The articles in this section are important in gaining historical, political, and social perspective. Part two focuses on mainland Southeast Asia, with essays representing Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Burma, Peninsular Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, and the minority peoples of mainland Southeast Asia. Part three focuses on island Southeast Asia, dividing the area into three sections: Indonesia, the Philippines, and Borneo. In addition to offering a detailed study of the music of each area, it also offers recent perspectives on the gamelan and theater traditions of Indonesia. Questions for Critical Thinking at the end of each major section guide and focus attention on what issues musical and cultural arise when one studies the music of Southeast Asia issues that might not occur in the study of other musics of the world. An accompanying compact disc offers musical examples from Southeast Asia.

On Christmas Eve, New York cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) is visiting his estranged wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) in Los Angeles, where she works. They are attending a party at Holly's high-rise office block when terrorists, led by the suave Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) break in, taking everyone hostage. McClane manages to evade capture, however, and sets out to rescue his wife and the other prisoners. It is not long before he is running barefoot over shattered glass (ouch!) in a sweaty vest, muttering 'Yippy kay aye' as he dispatches the baddies with bullets and a certain earthy wit.

"Hoppy is gone What will we do?" My father replied. "Well, we just have to search for him." "Well, I'm sure he'll turn up in due time." There it was, the final anticipation that he would come home However, I didn't buy it Off to my room I went - dejected and devoid of all hope. The tears came quickly in the quiet of my room. Emotion, especially tears, was an expression of feelings that were not allowed in our household. As a matter of fact, this era did not support the outward showing of emotion period It was the philosophy that, "Grown men don't cry " Why not? Men were supposed to be strong, masculine and reserved. Showing other emotions diminished that role. Tears were not to be shown. Hugs and saying "I love you" were rarely seen nor were they acceptable. Terry Miller was born on August 25, 1939 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He grew up in the small town of Thurmont, Maryland during the 1940s and 50s. He was inspired to share this memoir dealing with the struggles of climbing life's mountains; more importantly, the victories achieved along the way. It takes the reader through life's experiences that evolve into personal growth lessons and lasting spiritual strengths. Terry resides with his wife on a five acre country setting in Waxahachie, Texas with their horses and a "free range" dog named Smokey. Terry and his wife have four grown children and six grandchildren. He retired from a career in banking and is the Director of Pastoral Care in Waxahachie Bible Church.

From the gentle hills of Clarion County in western Pennsylvania emerges a poignant memoir of one family's strength, humor, and great love. With her desire to accept life with all its drama, Terri Miller touches the deepest part of the soul with her inspiring story.

Stunned by a series of tragedies, Miller explores the home of her youth in rural Limestone, hoping to reconcile the family's past with her desire to move forward with the future. She explores her family history from her grandparent's settlement in Limestone, to her parents' marriage after WWII through and beyond the tragic deaths of her brother and sister-in-law at the hands of a drunk driver. Despite the turmoil, Miller's faith that God has a plan, anchors her throughout the most challenging chapter of her life and helps sustain her on some of her worst days. In fact she sometimes finds wisdom and humor in her analysis of the events. But it is also the strength of her family's love for each other that gives Miller the courage and wisdom to look at the future with hope. "Maybe You Should Look a Little Closer" speaks to the strength of the human spirit and inspires acceptance and serenity in the storms of life.

Terry Miller
R3,438 Discovery Miles 34 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume describes the traditional vocal and instrumental music of the Lao-speaking people living in Northeast Thailand. Beginning with a description of the cultural and historical contexts of this music, Miller continues with an overview of Northeast Thai music, its instruments, concepts, and certain proto-musical genres. Individual chapters deal separately with the non-technical aspects, including the history, texts, economics, and performance practices of both kaen playing and mawlum singing. Another chapter discusses all technical matters concerning the vocal genres, including the tonal nature of the Lao language, the relationship between melody and linguistic tone, scales, rhythm and meter, form, and tempo. The final two chapters deal specifically with the kaen--a bamboo mouth organ with 6, 14, 16, or 18 tubes, each with a free-reed. This volume is generously illustrated with musical examples transcribed from field recordings made in Northeast Thailand, numerous photographs, and line drawings. Miller concludes with a series of translations of texts from musical examples; an extensive glossary which includes two forms of romanization, the Thai spelling, and a brief description; and, finally, a bibliography, discography, and index.
