Human thought and action is fundamentally shaped by a small set of
cognitive categories, such as time, space, causality, or
possession. It is not surprising, therefore, that all natural
languages have developed many devices to express these categories.
Temporality, for example, is reflected in the lexical meaning of
verbs, in grammatical marking of tense and aspect, in time
adverbials, in special particles, and in the application of
discourse principles. Many of these devices have been the subject
of intensive research across languages; but as a rule, this
research focuses on particular aspects, it does not look at the
expression of such a category as a whole, which is precisely the
aim of the present series. The short volumes bring together what is
known about the expression of a particular category in human
language.
Studying the various movements among women in the Catholic Church
in Asia, the author argues that the preexisting male-dominated
church rooted in the colonial era is now being challenged to
recentralize itself and exercises an inclusive and participatory
ecclesiology in which women should become fuller members of the
church and participate in the decision-making processes of the
church. For only when the church in Asia discovers and recognizes
the richness of women's potential, leadership, charisma, and
vision, will it be able to witness to the Gospel values and fulfill
its vision of mission in Asia. The author shows that Asian Catholic
women have played and continue to play a crucial role in designing
and carrying out multiple areas of the church's ministries that men
failed to do. Furthermore, the author shows that through the
interactions and dialogue with Asian bishops in recent decades,
Asian Catholic women have gradually influenced the Asian bishops'
consciousness of women's issues and concerns.
Many companies that have become household names have avoided
billions in taxes by 'parking' their valuable intellectual property
(IP) assets in holding companies located in tax-favored
jurisdictions. In the United States, for example, many domestic
companies have moved their IP to tax-favored states such as
Delaware or Nevada, while multinational companies have done the
same by setting up foreign subsidiaries in Ireland, Singapore,
Switzerland, and the Netherlands. In this illuminating work, tax
scholar Jeffrey A. Maine teams up with IP expert Xuan-Thao Nguyen
to explain how the use of these IP holding companies has become
economically unjustified and socially unacceptable, and how
numerous calls for change have been made. This book should be read
by anyone interested in how corporations - including Gore-Tex,
Victoria's Secret, Sherwin-Williams, Toys-R-Us, Apple, Microsoft,
and Uber - have avoided tax liability with IP holding companies and
how different constituencies are working to stop them.
