For almost a century, The Baldwin Locomotive Works was the world's premiere builder of steam locomotives. The years after WWII saw the company founder, as wartime production restrictions and poor planning delayed the company's entry into the diesel market. Mathias Baldwin built his first steam locomotive in 1832, with the assistance of a railroad mechanic named Andrew Vauclain. Five decades later, his son Samuel M. Vauclain joined the Baldwin Locomotive Works Company. Vauclain developed the compound locomotive in 1889, an achievement that changed the face of the railroad industry. He also engineered many engine prototypes, and performed developmental work on the balanced compound. A lifetime employee at Baldwin, he served as General Superintendent, Vice-President, President, and finally as Chairman of the Board, until his death in 1940. This catalog, which dates from 1900, shows Baldwin's full line of compound locomotive products and includes a discussion of their method of operation and maintenance. It includes technical specifications and other data. This version of the book has been slightly enlarged and reformatted for readability, but care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the original text.

Founded in the early 1830's by Philadelphia jeweler Matthais Baldwin, the company built a huge number of steam locomotives before ceasing production in 1949. These included the 4-4-0 American type, 2-8-2 Mikado and 2-8-0 Consolidation. Hit hard by the loss of the steam engine market, Baldwin soldiered on for a brief while, producing electric and diesel engines. General Electric's dominance of the market proved too much, and Baldwin finally closed its doors in 1956. By that time over 70,500 Baldwin locomotives had been produced. This high quality reprint of the official company history dates from 1920. It traces the growth of the company, the individuals who contributed to its success, and the innovative technologies that made it the most respected name in steam locomotives. The book also includes a brief history of the Standard Steel Works, which supplied Baldwin with parts.
