The Western Slope towns of Gunnison and Crested Butte are defined
by their placement in the Colorado Rockies. Both are located in
alpine valleys surrounded by 14,000-foot-high peaks with sparkling
mountain-fed streams, and both dominate the Gunnison country, a
unique wilderness covering over 4,000 square miles. Beginning over
400 years ago, Native Americans, fur traders, explorers, miners,
railroaders, and cattlemen all made a place for themselves in the
area. Today Gunnison, Crested Butte, and the Gunnison country
remain isolated and tranquil. Recreation, tourism, and cattle
ranching now reign supreme as Gunnison and Crested Butte attempt to
preserve their distinctly Western heritage.
The Believer, a ten-time National Magazine Award finalist, is a
literature, arts, and culture magazine published by the Beverly
Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute, and based in the
College of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Since 2003, The Believer has published writers that take the long
view, and work that's too unusual or experimental for mainstream
outlets. In each issue, readers will find journalism, essays,
intimate interviews, an expansive comics section, poetry, timely
and untimely reviews, and on occasion, delightful and unexpected
bonus items. The Believer is edited by: Hayden Bennett, Vera
Blossom, Camille Bromley, Jericho Brown, Daniel Gumbiner, Niela
Orr, Tamar Peterson, Kristen Radtke, Ross Simonini, Summer Thomad,
and James Yeh. The Believer is edited by a group of novelists,
poets, artists, columnists, critics, regular readers of the Chicago
Manual of Style, and aficionados of print and digital literature.
The editors are far-flung, curious, and interested in the kinds of
things that contributors are passionate about. Our regular
columnists are Nick Hornby and Peter Orner. Each issue of the
magazine is perfect-bound and printed by friendly Canadians on
recycled, acid-free, heavy-stock paper and suitable for archiving,
framing, or reading in the tub. Questions? Please give us a call:

Pres. Theodore Roosevelt once referred to the Apache Trail as "one
of the most spectacular best-worth-seeing sights of the world." The
once narrow, ancient foot trail built as a supply road for the
construction of Roosevelt Dam has now evolved into a state highway
with majestic scenic vistas and historical grandeur. Even in the
1920s, the Southern Pacific Railroad touted this road as a
"must-see side trip." Each year, thousands of people venture along
the trail to take a step back in time and relish the breathtaking
experience of this fabulous journey. The Fish Creek Hill section
remains much as it was back in the early 1900s, a narrow
one-vehicle passage on an extremely steep incline that drops 900
feet within a mile along the edge of a steep cliff. Although
several miles of the road are now paved, dirt portions remain that
allow tourists a sense of perilous adventure.
The fourth title in the extremely popular series of good practice,
these DVDs are written by the experts. Filmed in the Lake District
and the Scottish Highlands, this DVD outlines the essential skills
and techniques for summer hill walking in the UK. In 2007, the
Mountain Rescue teams of England and Wales dealt with 778
incidents, a 23% increase since 2003. As with previous DVDs in the
series, this DVD has been produced to educate mountain users,
making them aware of the often hostile environment of our uplands.
It will also inspire, with the dramatic beauty of two of the UK's
most popular walking areas shown to full effect. The film follows
two walkers, Frederlina and Ben, as they plan their days and follow
their walks. We see the challenges they face and the decisions they
make. In addition to the film, the technical chapters include:
Navigation, Scrambling, Weather, River Crossings, Mountain Rescue,
Ticks and Hazards.
