Adipocytokines provide the circuitry by which adipose tissue
communicates among its component cells which include adipocytes,
stromal cells, immune cells and vascular elements, with adipose
tissue depots in other locations throughout the body and with other
tissues in order to regulate physiologic processes of energy
intake, utilization, and distribution. Since disturbances, both
qualitative and quantitative, in adipocytokine function contribute
significantly to many of the comorbidities associated with obesity,
including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer, this volume,
which discusses most of the major adipocytokines independently and
collectively and their roles in normal and pathologic processes,
should be useful to all individuals seeking a deeper understanding
of these processes. Moreover, it provides a valuable complement to
the series on Energy Balance and Cancer, in which each volume is
focused on a specific aspect of this process, which now constitutes
an expanding problem as the obesity pandemic continues and more of
the population reaches the age where cancer is most prevalent. This
volume should provide a valuable resource to all clinicians and
scientists engaged in caring for susceptible patients and in
exploring the relation between energy balance and cancer as well as
an important platform to providing the background for research
development.
Although the fiction of Joseph Conrad has been studied extensively
from a psychological perspective, a major theme seemingly neglected
is that of ambivalence in the relations between fathers and sons.
This volume contains Rising's Freudian and post-Freudian analysis
of father/son interactions, at either the family or the social
level, in Conrad's work. Defining the father as any older male with
power and influence over a younger one, Rising examines wide
thematic variations that show Conrad's obsessive concern with
paternity-- as an object either of fear and hatred or of
longing--and in turn addresses the theme of Conrad's most
successful fiction: the protagonist's struggle to find (or keep)
his place in a world of men. In his fiction, Conrad uses an array
of fathers and paternal types to achieve a constantly shifting
perspective on filial relationships. In a panorama of actual or
potential conflict, the author provides portraits of Conrad's
father and son, and shows what chance of accommodation he offers.
In chapters on the prototype of the father, the jeaopardy of the
son on land, and the immunity of the son at sea, the book discusses
Conrad's use of an Oedipal compromise, a solution he abandoned in
later works. Ultimately, although he appears to have sought new
avenues of reconciliation in his last novels, the author
demonstrates that the father/son antagonism is never fully resolved
in his fiction. In addition to the primary chapters and epilogue,
the work contains a bibliography and an index. This book will be an
important reference tool for courses in English and psychology, as
well as an important addition to academic and public libraries.
Sedimentary coasts with their unique forms of life and productive ecosystems are one of the most threatened parts of the biosphere. This volume analyzes and compares ecological structures and processes at sandy beaches, tidal mudflats and in shallow coastal waters all around the world. Analyses of local processes are paired with comparisons between distant shores, across latitudinal gradients or between separate biogeographic provinces. Emphasis is given to suspension feeders in coastal mud and sand, to biogenic stabilizations and disturbances in coastal sediments, to seagrass beds and faunal assemblages across latitudes and oceans, to recovery dynamics in benthic communities, shorebird predation, and to experimental approaches to the biota of sedimentary shores.
Most scholars agree that 1968 was a watershed in U.S. political
history. And Senator Eugene McCarthy's anti-Vietnam War
presidential campaign was a main catalyst for the year's events.
McCarthy's near upset of President Lyndon B. Johnson in the first
presidential primary in New Hampshire dramatically illustrated the
divisions within the Democratic party, brought Senator Robert F.
Kennedy into the race, led to Johnson's withdrawal, and undercut
the radical New Left antiwar movement. This work has two main
purposes. First, it seeks to delineate Eugene McCarthy's
conservative-liberal ideology and, in so doing, contrast it to the
ideology of the New Left antiwar movement. And second, it seeks to
describe the historical context, causes, important events, and
effects of McCarthy's 1968 presidential campaign.
Over 50% of the churches in the United States should not be
marketing themselves. Shocked? You should be. Almost every church
wants to grow, but why do some succeed while others struggle? If
you're a pastor or a layperson serving on an outreach committee or
evangelism team, reading this book will help you avoid the pitfalls
that prevent churches from growing. The answer is simple. "God is
not as interested in promotion as he is in preparation," says
recognized church marketing expert Richard Reising. In

The Rolling Stones' Beggars Banquet is one of the seminal albums in
rock history. Arguably it not only marks the advent of the 'mature'
sound of the Rolling Stones but lays out a new blueprint for an
approach to blues-based rock music that would endure for several
decades. From its title to the dark themes that pervade some of its
songs, Beggars Banquet reflected and helped define a moment marked
by violence, decay, and upheaval. It marked a move away from the
artistic sonic flourishes of psychedelic rock towards an embrace of
foundational streams of American music - blues, country - that had
always underpinned the music of the Stones but assumed new primacy
in their music after 1968. This move coincided with, and
anticipated, the 'roots' moves that many leading popular music
artists made as the 1960s turned toward a new decade; but unlike
many of their peers whose music grew more 'soft' and subdued as
they embraced traditional styles, the music and attitude of the
Stones only grew harder and more menacing, and their status as
representatives of the dark underside of the 60s rock
counterculture assumed new solidity. For the Rolling Stones, the
1960s ended and the 1970s began with the release of this album in
1968.
"All that have ever tried to impose change in their organization
will immediately recognize and truly value the in-depth knowledge
and experience captured in this book. It contains a collection of
eye-openers that is a treasure chest for pioneers of new
organizational ideas, A fantastic toolbox for use in future
missions!" -Lise B. Hvatum, product development manager,
Schlumberger "If you have need of changing your organization, and
especially of introducing new techniques, then you want to
understand what is in this book. It will help you avoid common
pitfalls that doom many such projects and will show you a clear
path to success. The techniques are derived from the experience of
many individuals and organizations. Many are also fun to apply.
This stuff is really cool-and really hot." -Joseph Bergin,
professor of computer science, Pace University, New York "If change
is the only guarantee in life, why is it so hard to do? As this
book points out, people are not so much resistant to change itself
as they are to being changed. Mary Lynn and Linda have successfully
used the pattern form to capture and present the recurring lessons
of successful change efforts and have placed a powerful knowledge
resource in the hands of their readers." -Alan O'Callaghan,
researcher, Software Technology Research Laboratory, De Montfort
University, United Kingdom "The most difficult part of absorbing
patterns, or any technology, into an organization is overcoming the
people issues. The patterns in this book are the documentation of
having gone through that experience, giving those that dare push
the envelope a head start at success."-David E. DeLano, IBM
Pervasive Computing "If you have ever wondered how you could
possibly foster any cultural changes in your organization, in this
book you will find a lot of concrete advice for doing so. I
recommend that everyone read this book who has a vast interest in
keeping his or her organization flexible and open for cultural
change." -Jutta Eckstein, Independent Consultant, Objects In Action

Written by two distinguished leaders in midwifery, this text
provides a comprehensive examination of an effective model of
prenatal care associated with improved health outcomes and reduced
costs. This book describes basic tenets of the Centering Healthcare
model, which brings together cohorts of people with similar health
care needs in a circle group setting for care. The model encourages
meaningful dialogue between the patient, other patients,
clinicians, the family, and the community. Chapters discuss the
clinical practice landscape leading to the model's development, its
use in clinical practice, and its widespread and continuing growth
as an effective alternative to traditional care.Interspersed with
comments and stories from Centering participants and health care
professionals, this book describes the implementation of the model
that is based on three foundations: health care, interactive
learning, and community building. Throughout the book, chapters
emphasize that power of the group process through facilitative
leadership encourages behavior change and personal empowerment.
Applicable around the world and in other health care settings, this
book can be an invaluable resource for use by nurse-midwives,
family nurse practitioners, physicians, social workers, and other
health practitioners. Key Features: Describes the theoretical
foundations of the Centering Healthcare model Documents the
importance of the Centering model elements to achieve improved
health care and reduced cost Discusses the impact of evidence-based
research on providers, administrators, and policy makers Focuses on
implementation science relating to stages of system redesign and
the need for supportive mentoring Includes personal stories of
empowerment from patients, providers, and staff Demonstrates the
validity and applicability of the model to a variety of health care
populations, both domestic and international References the work of

Item response theory (IRT) has moved beyond the confines of
educational measurement into assessment domains such as
personality, psychopathology, and patient-reported outcomes.
Classic and emerging IRT methods and applications that are
revolutionizing psychological measurement, particularly for health
assessments used to demonstrate treatment effectiveness, are
reviewed in this new volume. World renowned contributors present
the latest research and methodologies about these models along with
their applications and related challenges. Examples using real
data, some from NIH-PROMIS, show how to apply these models in
actual research situations. Chapters review fundamental issues of
IRT, modern estimation methods, testing assumptions, evaluating
fit, item banking, scoring in multidimensional models, and advanced
IRT methods. New multidimensional models are provided along with
suggestions for deciding among the family of IRT models available.
Each chapter provides an introduction, describes state-of-the art
research methods, demonstrates an application, and provides a
summary. The book addresses the most critical IRT conceptual and
statistical issues confronting researchers and advanced students in
psychology, education, and medicine today. Although the chapters
highlight health outcomes data the issues addressed are relevant to
any content domain. The book addresses: IRT models applied to
non-educational data especially patient reported outcomes
Differences between cognitive and non-cognitive constructs and the
challenges these bring to modeling. The application of
multidimensional IRT models designed to capture typical performance
data. Cutting-edge methods for deriving a single latent dimension
from multidimensional data A new model designed for the measurement
of constructs that are defined on one end of a continuum such as
substance abuse Scoring individuals under different
multidimensional IRT models and item banking for patient-reported
health outcomes How to evaluate measurement invariance, diagnose
problems with response categories, and assess growth and change.
Part 1 reviews fundamental topics such as assumption testing,
parameter estimation, and the assessment of model and person fit.
New, emerging, and classic IRT models including modeling
multidimensional data and the use of new IRT models in typical
performance measurement contexts are examined in Part 2. Part 3
reviews the major applications of IRT models such as scoring, item
banking for patient-reported health outcomes, evaluating
measurement invariance, linking scales to a common metric, and
measuring growth and change. The book concludes with a look at
future IRT applications in health outcomes measurement. The book
summarizes the latest advances and critiques foundational topics
such a multidimensionality, assessment of fit, handling
non-normality, as well as applied topics such as differential item
functioning and multidimensional linking. Intended for researchers,
advanced students, and practitioners in psychology, education, and
medicine interested in applying IRT methods, this book also serves
as a text in advanced graduate courses on IRT or measurement.
Familiarity with factor analysis, latent variables, IRT, and basic
measurement theory is assumed.
The endurance of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon on the
Billboard Top 100 Chart is legendary, and its continuing sales and
ongoing radio airplay ensure its inclusion on almost every
conceivable list of rock's greatest albums. This collection of
essays provides indispensable studies of the monumental 1973 album
from a variety of musical, cultural, literary and social
perspectives. The development and change of the songs is considered
closely, from the earliest recordings through to the live, filmed
performance at London's Earls Court in 1994. The band became almost
synonymous with audio-visual innovations, and the performances of
the album at live shows were spectacular moments of mass-culture
although Roger Waters himself spoke out against such mass
spectacles. The band's stage performances of the album serve to
illustrate the multifaceted and complicated relationship between
modern culture and technology. The album is therefore placed within
the context of developments in late 1960s/early 1970s popular
music, with particular focus on the use of a variety of segues
between tracks which give the album a multidimensional unity that
is lacking in Pink Floyd's later concept albums. Beginning with
'Breathe' and culminating in 'Eclipse', a tonal and motivic
coherence unifies the structure of this modern song cycle. The
album is also considered in the light of modern day 'tribute'
bands, with a discussion of the social groups who have the
strongest response to the music being elaborated alongside the
status of mediated representations and their relation to the 'real'
Pink Floyd.
