Farm life has not turned out to be the pastoral dream Charlie and
Beth envisioned it would be. Their childless marriage is shaken by
tragedies. Desperate to save their failing homestead, they hire
help. Beth's morals become clouded when she sees the opportunity to
raise a child she could call her own in the vulnerable, and
pregnant, hired farmhand. When a terrible discovery brings darkness
upon them, Beth finds herself caught in a spiral of events that
could change her life forever-if she survives.
This book examines the central role media and communication play in
the activities of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) around the
globe, how NGOs communicate with key publics, engage stakeholders,
target political actors, enable input from civil society, and
create participatory opportunities. An international line-up of
authors first discuss communication practices, strategies, and
media uses by NGOs, providing insights into the specifics of NGO
programs for social change goals and reveal particular sets of
tactics NGOs commonly employ. The book then presents a set of case
studies of NGO organizing from all over the world—ranging from
Sudan via Brazil to China – to illustrate the particular contexts
that make NGO advocacy necessary, while also highlighting
successful initiatives to illuminate the important spaces NGOs
occupy in civil society. This comprehensive and wide-ranging
exploration of global NGO communication will be of great interest
to scholars across communication studies, media studies, public
relations, organizational studies, political science, and
development studies, while offering accessible pieces for
practitioners and organizers.

We seldom consider how much we mistakenly presume in hewing to
definitions of music that differ dramatically from the standpoint
of other cultures. In What Makes Music European, Marcello Sorce
Keller examines the limitations of accepted wisdom about the
concept of music in Euro-Western culture. His investigations of the
conclusions reached by music researchers of the past several
decades considerably upsets the concepts relied upon by the
concert-going public. Sorce Keller insightfully asks: Who makes the
music? Should music be original, and how much can it be? Why do
people identify with songs, pieces, styles, and repertoire? Why is
music so ideological? Why do we misunderstand the music of
different times and places, and why do we enjoy doing so? He also
explores the juxtaposition of economy, society, and music making,
as well as the concept of "illegal harmonies." In What Makes Music
European, Sorce Keller addresses the little-discussed matters that
are essential to an understanding of how music intersects with the
life of so many people. Readers are offered an approach for
thinking about music that depends as much on its history as on the
concepts and attitudes of the social sciences. What Makes Music
European concisely demonstrates, to those familiar with Western
music, how peculiar Euro-Western concepts of music appear from a
cross-cultural perspective. At the same time, it encourages
ethnomusicologists to apply their knowledge to Western music and
explain to its public how much of what listeners take for granted
is, at the very least, highly debatable.
Written as a music theory text that not only addresses the
important fundamental syntax of music in the classical sense but
also relates this syntax to current practices and styles, this book
should be particularly well-suited to musicians focusing on aspects
of the music business and of popular culture.
Cataract Surgery With Phaco and Femtophaco Techniques offers a
unique insight into the evolution of phacoemulsification machines
and the development of new ways to supply energy, as well as new
devices that improve fluidics therefore increasing the safety of
the phaco and femtophaco surgical procedures. Dr. Lucio Buratto,
Dr. Stephen Brint, and Dr. Rosalia Sorce provide a step-by-step
approach to everything the surgeon must learn about the physical
principles that regulate the fluidics and energy to understand the
machine's working during the surgical procedure. Cataract Surgery
With Phaco and Femtophaco Techniques covers a wide variety of
topics, including anterior chamber phacoemulsification,
endocapsular techniques, irrigation and aspiration, fluidics and
pumps, and principles of femtosecond cataract surgery. Supplemented
by more than 300 color illustrations, diagrams, a glossary, and
references, all surgeons from beginner to expert will want this
unique resource by their side.

Custom Bike Building Basics is the basic bible that at-home
builders need to build and modify their own motorcycle. Brought to
you by Chris Callen, Cycle Source Magazine, and Wolfgang
Publications, this new book starts with a chapter on Setting up
your Shop. The next chapter is just as important: working with, and
welding, steel. Grass roots bikes are often built using a "donor
bike" as the foundation and source for the majority of parts. Two
chapters offer tips on choosing the best donor bike, and scrounging
the swap meets for the things that didn't come along with that
bike. Once you have most of the parts, you still need A Plan, with
a plan and a donor bike, it's time to Build a Roller. This is a
chance to see how things fit together in the real world, what might
be needed for wheel spacers, and exactly how the fenders should
mount. The final topics are two that most of us find very
intimidating: Upholstery and Wiring. With one chapter on each
Topic, the mystery and fear are eliminated. Simple leather work is
not rocket science. And basic wiring, especially for a bike without
turn signals, is likewise a pretty straightforward operation -
especially with the help of a good how-to chapter on each topic.
New from Wolfgang Publications and Cycle Source Magazine, Custom
Bike Building Basics is the one book you need before you tear into
that donor bike and begin the process of creating your own
motorcycle.

The Clean Air Act established a pair of programsa "known as New
Source Review (NSR)a "that regulate large stationary sources of air
pollution, such as factories and electricity-generating facilities.
Congress then asked the National Research Council to estimate the
effects of NSR rule changes made in 2002 and 2003 in terms of the
effects on emissions and human health, and changes in operating
efficiency (including energy efficiency), pollution prevention, and
pollution-control activities. New Source Review for Stationary
Sources of Air Pollution provides insights into the potential
effects of the rule changes on national emissions from the electric
power industry. Although this book focuses on the 2002 and 2003
rules, its analytic framework applies to other possible changes in
NSR and to other regulatory contexts. Helpful, in that it outlines
the data-collection efforts needed to assess the impact of the NSR
rules, the book recommends EPA and other government agencies
undertake and sustain the recommended methods.
