Financial Times -- 'An extraordinary, enticing fusion of fiction
and natural history. The artwork alone [...] is stunning.' Kate
Winslet -- 'Breathtakingly beautiful... every young adventurer
should read this book.' The Oldie -- 'The second thrilling voyage
for the Unknown Adventurer.' Are you ready to take part in an
adventure? To face danger at every turn? To venture into unknown
lands? If you are, then Journey to the Last River may be the
perfect adventure book for you. 'I would mention the area's name,
but I can't. All I can say is that this map would lead the two of
us on an expedition into the heart of the unknown, hoping to find
the last river for ourselves. What we discovered deep within the
rainforest was enough to make me remove or change the place names
in this journal - just like the map maker. Soon, you will know and
understand....' Join the Unknown Adventurer again on this thrilling
adventure into the Amazon, which begins with a map discovered in
the Royal Geographical Society showing a river that has been
mysteriously rubbed out. It leads the Unknown Adventurer and his
companion Bibi into a search for this 'last river' that will change
their understanding of nature forever. This book is a thrilling
tale of a voyage into the Amazon rainforest that looks exactly like
a real scrap book inside, with smudged pages, handwritten-looking
text and even die-cut piranha bite marks from a previous scrape.
The gripping story features encounters with caiman and anacondas,
incredible flora and fauna, survival tips and much, much more. The
first title in a new series of spin-off adventures from The Lost
Book of Adventure. Praise for The Lost Book of Adventure: Bear
Grylls -- 'Packed FULL of adventures' The Guardian -- 'A clarion
call to the child explorer [...] a spectacular immersion in the
life of the wild.' Daily Express -- 'Exquisitely illustrated [...]
children will treasure it for years to come.'

Novel asymmetric synthetic methods are a vital strategem in the
armoury of the organic chemist, particularly for those involved in
the preparation or application of chiral organic molecules. this
series is devoted to presenting the latest advances in the field of
asymmetric synthesis, drawing contributions on emerging areas and
articles providing authoritative perspectives on more developed
synthetic stategies from leading researchers in the field. This
volume consists of six contributions on a variety of topical areas,
ranging from the preparation and application of chiral
cylopentadienes, the synthesis of non-racemic amines, diketones and
-keto esters and ferrocenes, to the use of biocatalysis and
application of microbial methods for the synthesis of chiral
molecules and fine chemicals.

Handbook of Convex Geometry, Volume B offers a survey of convex
geometry and its many ramifications and connections with other
fields of mathematics, including convexity, lattices,
crystallography, and convex functions. The selection first offers
information on the geometry of numbers, lattice points, and packing
and covering with convex sets. Discussions focus on packing in
non-Euclidean spaces, problems in the Euclidean plane, general
convex bodies, computational complexity of lattice point problem,
centrally symmetric convex bodies, reduction theory, and lattices
and the space of lattices. The text then examines finite packing
and covering and tilings, including plane tilings, monohedral
tilings, bin packing, and sausage problems. The manuscript takes a
look at valuations and dissections, geometric crystallography,
convexity and differential geometry, and convex functions. Topics
include differentiability, inequalities, uniqueness theorems for
convex hypersurfaces, mixed discriminants and mixed volumes,
differential geometric characterization of convexity, reduction of
quadratic forms, and finite groups of symmetry operations. The
selection is a dependable source of data for mathematicians and
researchers interested in convex geometry.
Handbook of Convex Geometry, Volume A offers a survey of convex
geometry and its many ramifications and relations with other areas
of mathematics, including convexity, geometric inequalities, and
convex sets. The selection first offers information on the history
of convexity, characterizations of convex sets, and mixed volumes.
Topics include elementary convexity, equality in the
Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequality, mixed surface area measures,
characteristic properties of convex sets in analysis and
differential geometry, and extensions of the notion of a convex
set. The text then reviews the standard isoperimetric theorem and
stability of geometric inequalities. The manuscript takes a look at
selected affine isoperimetric inequalities, extremum problems for
convex discs and polyhedra, and rigidity. Discussions focus on
include infinitesimal and static rigidity related to surfaces,
isoperimetric problem for convex polyhedral, bounds for the volume
of a convex polyhedron, curvature image inequality, Busemann
intersection inequality and its relatives, and Petty projection
inequality. The book then tackles geometric algorithms, convexity
and discrete optimization, mathematical programming and convex
geometry, and the combinatorial aspects of convex polytopes. The
selection is a valuable source of data for mathematicians and
researchers interested in convex geometry.
Sweeney Todd is a barber who dispatches his victims by pulling a
lever as they sit in his barber chair. His victims fall backward
down a revolving trapdoor into the basement of his shop, generally
causing them to break their necks or skulls. In case they are
alive, Todd goes to the basement and "polishes them off" (slitting
their throats with his straight razor). After Todd has robbed his
dead victims of their goods, Mrs. Lovett, his partner in crime,
assists him in disposing of the bodies by baking their flesh into
meat pies and selling them to the unsuspecting customers of her pie
shop. All the horror stories in this nice collection are written by
unknown authors.
Hardbound. This reference work covers the many aspects of Robust
Inference. Much of what is contained in the chapters, written by
leading experts in the field, has not been part of previous surveys
of this area. Robust Inference has been an active area of research
for the last two decades. Especially during recent years it has
been extended in different directions covering a wide variety of
models. This volume will be valuable for both graduate students and
researchers using statistical methods.
Satellite communications technology is a tremendous force for
change and innovation. From the first satellite telephone call, to
the moon landing in 1969, to today's global coverage of the
Olympics with more than 3 billion viewers, satellites have helped
create a world community. From $300trillion annually in worldwide
electronic funds transfers to hundreds of millions of airline
reservations, satellites play critical roles in finance, business
and international trade. Despite growth in fiber optic cables, some
60% of all overseas communications is satellite based. Today, more
than 200 countries and territories rely on about 200 satellites for
domestic, regional and/or global linkages, defense communications,
direct broadcast services, navigation, data collection, and mobile
communications. Satellite communications is the largest and most
successful of all commercial space enterprises-it is currently a
$15 billion per year business which could grow to $30 billion per
year within the decade.
In the mid-1960s, when satellite communications first became a
commercial reality, the United States was not just the leader, but
was predominant in every aspect from launch vehicles to satellite
technology. The agreements under which the International
Telecommunications Satellite Organization (INTELSAT) were
established were originally negotiated on an interim basis only,
giving the United States a dominant leadership role. Japan and
Europe felt they would need a number of years to enter seriously
into the field. Today, more than a quarter of a century later,
conditions have changed dramatically.
The focus of this study is on experimental and advanced
technology being developed in R&D anddemonstration programs
rather than on today's production capabilities. The report focuses
on commercial satellite technology, and does not review
defense-related or other confidential satellite communications
capabilities. The NASNNSF panel concluded that the United States
has lost its leading position in many critical satellite
communications technologies.

This Handbook treats those parts of the theory of Boolean algebras
of most interest to pure mathematicians: the set-theoretical
abstract theory and applications and relationships to measure
theory, topology, and logic. It is divided into two parts
(published in three volumes). Part I (volume 1) is a comprehensive,
self-contained introduction to the set-theoretical aspects of the
theory of Boolean Algebras. It includes, in addition to a
systematic introduction of basic algebra and topological ideas,
recent developments such as the Balcar-Franek and
Shelah-Shapirovskii results on free subalgebras. Part II (volumes 2
and 3) contains articles on special topics describing - mostly with
full proofs - the most recent results in special areas such as
automorphism groups, Ketonen's theorem, recursive Boolean algebras,
and measure algebras.
This book is an anonymously written biography of Saint Philomena, a
young consecrated virgin whose remains were discovered in Italy in
1802. The name Philomena means `daughter of light'; this led to the
appreciation of the young girl's bones as an artifact of Christian
Rome. The significance of her life and deeds, plus the various
miracles which were purported to have occurred in proximity to her
bones, such as the multiplication and distribution of her bone dust
to many onlookers, led to calls for her to be sainted. Decades
after the initial discovery, the girl was witnessed in a vision
experienced by a Greek nun, who said she was a holy princess and
daughter of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The significance of Saint
Philomena became known throughout the Catholic world, and her tomb
and church became local landmarks in provincial Italy. To this day,
the sites associated with her are attractions for Christian
pilgrims and other visitors, curious to know of the significance of
the holy remains.
