Greek and Latin Love - The Poetic Connection (Hardcover): Thea S. Thorsen, Iris Brecke, Stephen Harrison Greek and Latin Love - The Poetic Connection (Hardcover)
Thea S. Thorsen, Iris Brecke, Stephen Harrison
R3,457 Discovery Miles 34 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It is often claimed that the kind of love that is variously deemed 'romantic' or 'true' did not exist in antiquity. Yet, ancient literature abounds with stories that seem to adhere precisely to this kind of love. This volume focuses on such literature and the concepts of love it espouses. The volume differs from and challenges much existing classical scholarship which has traditionally privileged the theme of sex over love and prose-genres over those of poetry. By conversely focusing on love and poetry, the present volume freshly explores central poets in ancient literature, such Homer, Sappho, Terence, Catullus, Virgil, Horace and Ovid, alongside less canonized, such as the anonymous poet of The Lament for Bion, Philodemus and Sulpicia. The chapters, which are written by world-leading as well as younger scholars, reveal that Greek and Latin concepts of love seem interconnected, that such love is as relevant for hetero- as homoerotic couples, and that such ideas of love follow the mainstream of poetry throughout antiquity. In addition to the general reader interested in the history of love, this volume is relevant for students and scholars of the ancient world and the poetic tradition.

Dynamics of Ancient Prose - Biographic, Novelistic, Apologetic (Hardcover): Thea S. Thorsen, Stephen Harrison Dynamics of Ancient Prose - Biographic, Novelistic, Apologetic (Hardcover)
Thea S. Thorsen, Stephen Harrison
R3,633 Discovery Miles 36 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ancient prose is intriguingly diverse. This volume explores the dynamics of the Latin and Greek prose of the Roman empire in the forms of biography, novel and apologetics which have historically lacked recognition as uncanonical genres, and yet appear vital today. Focusing on the sophistication in thought and artistic texture to be found within these literary kinds, this volume offers a collection of stimulating essays for students and scholars of literature and culture in antiquity - and beyond.

Ovid's Early Poetry - From his Single Heroides to his Remedia Amoris (Hardcover): Thea S. Thorsen Ovid's Early Poetry - From his Single Heroides to his Remedia Amoris (Hardcover)
Thea S. Thorsen
R2,655 Discovery Miles 26 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ovid is one of the greatest poets in the Classical tradition and Western literature. This book represents the most comprehensive study to date of his early output as a unified literary production. Firstly, the book proposes new ways of organising this part of Ovid's poetic career, the chronology of which is notoriously difficult to establish. Next, by combining textual criticism with issues relating to manuscript transmission, the book decisively counters arguments levelled against the authenticity of Heroides 15, which consequently allows for a revaluation of Ovid's early output. Furthermore, by focusing on the literary device of allusion, the book stresses the importance of Ovid's single Heroides 1-15 in relationship with his Amores I-III, Ars amatoria I-III and Remedia amoris. Finally, the book identifies three kinds of Ovidian poetics that are found in his early poetry and that point towards the works of myth and exile that followed in his later career.

The Cambridge Companion to Latin Love Elegy (Hardcover, New): Thea S. Thorsen The Cambridge Companion to Latin Love Elegy (Hardcover, New)
Thea S. Thorsen
R2,168 Discovery Miles 21 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this volume leading international scholars offer a comprehensive, critical and engaging presentation of the genre of Latin love elegy. Opening with an outline of Greek elegy and Latin precursors, the volume challenges the conception of Gallus as the 'inventor' of Latin love elegy, highlights how Sulpicia, the only woman whose poetry is extant, makes the genre unique in the history of Augustan literature in terms of gender, and provides fresh presentations of the canonical Latin elegists. Five chapters visit the world of Latin love elegy, the time, place and political background, the stock figures and the slavery of love and erotic campaigning. A whole section treats the limits of Latin love elegy, which seem to be inherent to the genre itself. Nevertheless, the volume closes with a series of investigations into the reception of Latin love elegy, which attests to its vital influence on the history of Western literature.

The Cambridge Companion to Latin Love Elegy (Paperback, New): Thea S. Thorsen The Cambridge Companion to Latin Love Elegy (Paperback, New)
Thea S. Thorsen
R1,121 Discovery Miles 11 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Latin love elegy is one of the most important poetic genres in the Augustan era, also known as the golden age of Roman literature. This volume brings together leading scholars from Australia, Europe and North America to present and explore the Greek and Roman backdrop for Latin love elegy, the individual Latin love elegists (both the canonical and the non-canonical), their poems and influence on writers in later times. The book is designed as an accessible introduction for the general reader interested in Latin love elegy and the history of love and lament in Western literature, as well as a collection of critically stimulating essays for students and scholars of Latin poetry and of the classical tradition.

Roman Receptions of Sappho (Hardcover): Thea S. Thorsen, Stephen Harrison Roman Receptions of Sappho (Hardcover)
Thea S. Thorsen, Stephen Harrison
R3,942 Discovery Miles 39 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sappho, a towering figure in Western culture, is an exemplary case in the history of classical receptions. There are three prominent reasons for this. Firstly, Sappho is associated with some of the earliest poetry in the classical tradition, which makes her reception history one of the longest we know of. Furthermore, Sappho's poetry promotes ideologically challenging concepts such as female authority and homoeroticism, which have prompted very conspicuous interpretative strategies to deal with issues of gender and sexuality, revealing the values of the societies that have received her works through time. Finally, Sappho's legacy has been very well explored from the perspective of reception studies: important investigations have been made into responses both to her as poet-figure and to her poetry from her earliest reception through to our own time. However, one of the few eras in Sappho's longstanding reception history that has not been systematically explored before this volume is the Roman period. The omission is a paradox. Receptions of Sappho can be traced in more than eighteen Roman poets, among them many of the most central authors in the history of Latin literature. Surely, few other Greek poets can rival the impact of Sappho at Rome. This important fact calls out for a systematic approach to Sappho's Roman reception, which is the aim of Roman Receptions of Sappho that focuses on the poetry of the central period of Roman literary history, from the time of Lucretius to that of Martial.
