Having already published a bibliography on Annie Besant, Theodore
Besterman in this book continued with the story of her life. She
was a prominent British Theosophist, women's rights activist,
writer and orator who lived between 1847 and 1933. Originally
published in 1934, this work is fascinating for anyone with an
interest in Annie Besant's life specifically or in any of the areas
in which she became a household name.
'Studies of Savages and Sex' are brought together by nine shorter
essays. In the present Volume are assembled three longer studies,
the first of which, indeed, is long and important enough to have
made a volume itself. It speaks of the origins, forms and
psychology of dress (with special emphasis on the sexual
psychology). The psychology of drinks and drums and all three
combined.

The success of my revised edition of Mr Crawley's The Mystic Rose
has encouraged me to bring together in the present volume some of
his papers previously unpublished in book-form, on subjects akin to
those of his great work. Mr Crawley's treatment of these problems
of sexual anthropology, especially on the psychological side, was,
in the years in which he was most actively at work, too
uncompromisingly original to meet with general acceptation, even in
academic circles. But now his standpoint, which can perhaps be best
described as being that of a profound psychological analysis on the
basis of biological common-sense, is beginning to be appreciated.
And the following papers will be found, I think, to contain all
those qualities which so sharply differentiate Mr Crawley's work
from that of most other students in the same fields.

Originally published in 1935, William Archer's interest in dreams
had persisted for over quarter of a century, for ten years of which
he kept a careful record of his own dreams. These records alone
form a valuable collection of material, of which Archer made good
use in the writing of the book on dreams on which he was engaged at
the time of his death; large parts of these dream-records are
reproduced in this book. He left this book partly finished, partly
in draft, and partly in the form of notes. In putting together this
material the editor, Theodore Besterman, tries to carry out
Archer's intentions as closely as possible, and believed that he
represented the book as he would have wished it to appear. It was
unquestionably an important contribution to a difficult subject at
the time, the result of many years' study and reflection.

Voltaire's irony, scrutiny, and passionate love of reason and justice are fully evident in this deliberately revolutionary series of essays on religion, metaphysics, society, and government.
