Einstein, 1905-2005 - Poincare Seminar 2005 (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): Thibault Damour, Olivier Darrigol, Vincent Rivasseau Einstein, 1905-2005 - Poincare Seminar 2005 (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)

R3,048 Discovery Miles 30 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is the fourth in a series of lectures of the S eminaire Poincar e, whichis directed towards a large audience of physicists and of mathematicians. The goal of this seminar is to provide up-to-date information about general topics of great interest in physics. Both the theoretical and experimental aspects are covered, with some historical background. Inspired by the Bourbaki seminar in mathematics in its organization, hence nicknamed "Bourbaphi," the Poincar e Seminar is held twice a year at the Institut Henri Poincar e in Paris, with cont- butions prepared in advance. Particular care is devoted to the pedagogical nature of the presentations so as to ful?ll the goal of being readable by a large audience of scientists. This volume contains the seventh such Seminar, held in 2005. It is devoted to Einstein's 1905 papers and their legacy. After a presentation of Einstein's ep- temological approach to physics, and the genesis of special relativity, a cen- nary perspective is o?ered. The geometry of relativistic spacetime is explained in detail. Single photon experiments are presented, as a spectacular realization of Einstein's light quanta hypothesis. A previously unpublished lecture by Einstein, which presents an illuminating point of view on statistical physics in 1910, at the dawn of quantum mechanics, is reproduced. The volume ends with an essay on the historical, physical and mathematical aspects of Brownian motion. We hopethatthe publicationofthis serieswill servethe community ofphy- cists and mathematicians at the graduate student or professional level."

Gravitation and Experiment - Poincare Seminar 2006 (Hardcover, 2007 ed.): Thibault Damour, Vincent Rivasseau Gravitation and Experiment - Poincare Seminar 2006 (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
Thibault Damour, Vincent Rivasseau
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a detailed, pedagogical introduction to general relativity. It includes a review of what may lie beyond and collects up-to-date essays on the experimental tests of this theory, including the precise timing of the double pulsar J0737-3039. Coverage also details the recent results of the Gravity Probe B mission.

Once Upon Einstein (Paperback, Illustrated Ed): Thibault Damour Once Upon Einstein (Paperback, Illustrated Ed)
Thibault Damour
R1,250 Discovery Miles 12 500 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

It is well known that Einstein founded twentieth-century physics with his work on relativity and quanta, but what do we really know about these ground breaking ideas? How were they discovered? What should we retain today from the conceptual upheavals he initiated? Through a selection of concrete scenes taken from Einstein's life, the author offers a view into the formation of his theories, as well as reminders of the day-to-day applications of his ideas. Simultaneously the reader is lead through a reflection on their philosophical impact: How should we think of time according to the theory of relativity, which removes any meaningful "now" and shows that twins can have different ages? How should we think of reality when quantum theory predicts that spatially separated objects nevertheless remain connected through Einstein's notion of "entanglement," which has recently been verified through scientific observation? This book puts readers in Einstein's place, allowing them to share some of those particular moments when he succeeded in "lifting a corner of the great veil."

Theory (Hardcover): Sergei M Kopeikin Theory (Hardcover)
Sergei M Kopeikin; Contributions by Michael Soffel, Thibault Damour, Gerhard Schafer, Sergei Kopeikin, …
R8,030 Discovery Miles 80 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Relativistic celestial mechanics - investigating the motion celestial bodies under the influence of general relativity - is a major tool of modern experimental gravitational physics. With a wide range of prominent authors from the field, this two-volume series consists of reviews on a multitude of advanced topics in the area of relativistic celestial mechanics - starting from more classical topics such as the regime of asymptotically-flat spacetime, light propagation and celestial ephemerides, but also including its role in cosmology and alternative theories of gravity as well as modern experiments in this area. This first volume of a two-volume series is concerned with theoretical foundations such as post-Newtonian solutions to the two-body problem, light propagation through time-dependent gravitational fields, as well as cosmological effects on the movement of bodies in the solar systems. On the occasion of his 80-th birthday, these two volumes honor V. A. Brumberg - one of the pioneers in modern relativistic celestial mechanics. Contributions include: M. Soffel: On the DSX-framework T. Damour: The general relativistic two body problem G. Schaefer: Hamiltonian dynamics of spinning compact binaries through high post-Newtonian approximations A. Petrov and S. Kopeikin: Post-Newtonian approximations in cosmology T. Futamase: On the backreaction problem in cosmology Y. Xie and S. Kopeikin: Covariant theory of the post-Newtonian equations of motion of extended bodies S. Kopeikin and P. Korobkov: General relativistic theory of light propagation in multipolar gravitational fields

Mysteries of the Quantum Universe (Paperback): Thibault Damour, Mathieu Burniat Mysteries of the Quantum Universe (Paperback)
Thibault Damour, Mathieu Burniat; Translated by Sarah-Louise Raillard 1
R579 Discovery Miles 5 790 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The bestselling French graphic novel about the mind-bending world of quantum physics Take an incredible journey through the quantum universe with explorer Bob and his dog Rick, as they travel through a world of wonders, talk to Einstein about atoms, hang out with Heisenberg on Heligoland and eat crepes with Max Planck. Along the way, we find out that a dog - much like a cat - can be both dead and alive, the gaze of a mouse can change the universe, and a comic book can actually make quantum physics fun, easy to understand and downright enchanting. 'Billed as "Tintin meets Brian Cox", the book was created by theoretical physicist Thibault Damour and illustrator Mathieu Burniat so it's as scientifically accurate as it is beautiful' BBC Focus
